After four trips to Daocheng Yading, this hardcore two-day guide will help you experience this paradise on earth.

Daocheng Yading has had its fair share of both praise and criticism over the years. However, as the starting point of my road trip across China 10 years ago, I still have a deep attachment to it.
Yading, located in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, is known as the "Last Pure Land on the Blue Planet." It boasts a diverse landscape of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, canyons, forests, meadows, and lakes, offering breathtakingly pure scenery.
The three sacred mountains—Xiannairi (6,032 meters), Yangmaiyong (5,958 meters), and Xianuoduoji (5,958 meters)—are important pilgrimage sites for Tibetans. I've visited Yading in spring, autumn, and winter. Regardless of the season, the mountains are dotted with jewel-like lakes: Milk Lake, Five-Color Lake, and Pearl Lake, each creating a breathtaking visual experience. Of course, Tibetan temples like Chonggu Monastery along the way further enhance the area's rich religious atmosphere.
II. Tour Route and Highlights
Morning: Explore the Long Route and Pilgrimage to the Sacred Mountains and Lakes
It is strongly recommended to stay in Yading Village, near the scenic area, the night before, to arrive around 7:00 AM. Due to the high crowds, it is recommended to avoid visiting during peak holiday seasons; the constant queues are unpleasant. Then, take a sightseeing bus to Zhaguanbeng (approximately 40 kilometers) and walk to Chonggu Monastery. Then, take an electric car to Luolong Cattle Farm (a picturesque alpine pasture surrounded by three sacred mountains). From here, hike or horseback ride (approximately 300 yuan/person) to Milk Lake, an ancient glacial lake with a distinctive milky blue color, at 4,600 meters.
Continuing the climb for approximately 40 minutes, you will reach the Five-Colored Lake at 4,700 meters. The lake's waters reflect different colors in the sunlight, creating a truly spectacular sight.
Afternoon: Relax and experience the culture and nature.
After returning to Chonggu Temple, you can choose a relaxing short tour: head to Pearl Lake (Zholma Lacuo) and admire the reflection of Mount Xiannairi in the lake. This tour takes about an hour to reach.
If you have more time, you can split the tour into two days, covering both the long and short routes. This is less physically demanding.
Practical Tips:
· Ticket Information: During peak season (April 15th-November 19th), the entrance fee is 146 yuan, and the sightseeing bus is 120 yuan (required).
· Transportation: You can take a direct bus from Chengdu Xinnanmen Station (approximately 12 hours), or drive.
· Altitude Sickness: Take Rhodiola rosea in advance, bring oxygen tanks (it's recommended to buy them in town for a better price), and glucose.
· Equipment and Food: Due to the significant temperature difference between day and night, you should bring plenty of warm clothing (such as a jacket) and waterproof, non-slip hiking shoes. Food is expensive in the scenic area, so it's recommended to bring high-calorie snacks and self-heating food.
Although the journey to Daocheng Yading is difficult, all the fatigue will be worth it when you find yourself in this beautiful pure land.
