Its location, surrounded by five small mountain ranges, gives it the shape and imposing presence of five dragons fighting for a pearl, hence its name. In Hengdian, I felt like I'd stumbled onto the set of a period drama. I'd traveled through multiple dynasties in a single day. Whether it was the deep courtyards of the Ming and Qing Dynasty palaces or the towering aura of the Qin Emperor's Palace, I felt oppressed. Perhaps looking at the dilapidated Along the River During the Qingming Festival gave it a more earthbound feel.
It turns out that the past, without skyscrapers, could also be unsettling. I walked and walked among the magnificent buildings, a cold and solemn atmosphere washing over me. There was even a sense of certainty. However, it seemed impossible to breathe this air.
