Shaxi Ancient Town is located in the southern part of Jianchuan County, Dali, Yunnan Province, between Dali and Lijiang. It is a national 4A-level scenic area. It is the only surviving ancient market town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, with a history dating back to the Yin and Shang Dynasties. It was once one of the birthplaces of Yunnan's Bronze Age culture. The ancient town features attractions such as Sideng Street, Xingjiao Temple, and an ancient stage. It boasts a rich ethnic culture, with the Bai people making up over 90% of the population, and still preserves folk festivals such as the Prince's Festival.
Attraction Review: Rustic and uncommercialized, the red sand road and ancient stage exude a serene beauty. Highlights: Visit the Pioneer Bookstore, sample fresh mushrooms at the market, and experience Bai ethnic culture. Tips: Bring cash; a light jacket won't be enough for a trip to Shaxi Ancient Town in November. Temperatures here are currently between 3 and 21℃, with a significant difference between day and night temperatures. If you want to see the morning mist at Yujin Bridge, the temperature may be even lower, so a thick coat or light down jacket is recommended for warmth. A day and one night is ideal for a leisurely experience.

Jianchuan's tourism resources emphasize both historical culture and natural landscapes: Jianchuan Ancient City: Founded in the Yuan Dynasty, it retains a large number of Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings. Over 90% of the residences are in the Bai ethnic style, featuring the "three courtyards and one screen wall" or "four courtyards and five patios" layout. The ancient building complex on Ximen Street is a national key cultural relics protection unit. Visitors can stroll along the bluestone alleys and experience intangible cultural heritage such as the worship of local deities and Jianchuan wood carving. Shibaoshan Scenic Area: Famous for its Danxia landforms and grotto art, the Shibaoshan Grottoes are hailed as "Southern Treasures," masterpieces of carving from the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms periods. Every year from February to August in the lunar calendar, the Shibaoshan Song Festival is held here, where visitors can listen to Bai folk songs and experience traditional festivals. Shaxi Ancient Town: A well-preserved market town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, with attractions such as Sideng Street, the Sifang Street Ancient Stage, and Yujin Bridge exuding a rustic charm. We recommend taking a stroll across Yujin Bridge at dusk to enjoy a panoramic sunset. Qianshi Mountain: Named for its more than 3,000 stone lion sculptures, visitors can climb the mountain to admire the uniquely shaped lions and experience the tranquil mountain forest praised by Xu Xiake. Jian Lake: A highland wetland, it is a habitat for black-necked cranes in winter. Cycling around the lake or camping offers a chance to enjoy natural peace and quiet.
Jianchuan Ancient Town is less crowded and has a lively, lived-in feel! It's perfect for daydreaming and relaxing! You can sit quietly by the narrow stone-paved streets of the ancient town, watching locals and tourists come and go, or sit in a second-floor café, quietly listening to music and gazing at the verdant mountains in the distance. You can chat with the villagers about everyday life, or bask in the sun and play with the chubby cats! You can let your mind wander at any time, listening only to the sound of wind chimes floating in the air... that feeling of freedom and relaxation...
