Dali Dong Village
This is an "ancient village carved by time"
Here, it is surrounded by mountains and rivers, with crisscrossing paths, terraced fields, blue tiles and nanmu trees, and lingering smoke
Drum towers, singing and dancing, and a paradise...
Dali Dong Village is located in Rongjiang County, Qiandongnan Prefecture, Guizhou Province. It is located in the "Southern Dong" corner of the Dong border between Hunan, Guizhou and Guangxi. It is 23km away from the county seat. It is the best-preserved village in China with the original ecological Dong customs. It carries rich Dong culture and history and is known as the "Pearl of the Deep Mountains"
Today, the Dong people call themselves "Gaeml"
As a tribe name, it means "people covered by forests" and "hidden people"
The Dong language is spoken here, there is no written language, and the history and culture are passed down from generation to generation in the form of Dong songs
The villagers of Dali Village are used to calling it "Dali Cave"
"Dong" is a variant of "Dong"
In ancient times, "Dong" was a traditional local administrative unit
From the literal meaning, it refers to a basin hidden in the deep mountains and valleys with streams crisscrossing
The people living here are called "Dong people"
This is also the origin of the name "Dong" among ethnic minorities
About half of the Dong population in China lives in Guizhou Province
But in fact, they are not the earliest aborigines
But they developed from a branch of the ancient southern Baiyue ethnic group
More than 600 years ago, in order to avoid war
Most of the Dali people migrated from Wuzhou, Guangxi, Ji'an, Jiangxi, and the Pearl River Basin.
Since ancient times, the Dong people have chosen to live near water.
They live in small basins between mountains or terraces on both sides of rivers and streams.
The rivers and streams originate from the "Longtan Waterfall" upstream and cross the entire village.
Waterways like this were called "stream caves" in ancient times.
"The Dong people live by the water."
In Dong culture, "wind and rain bridges" can bring happiness, auspiciousness, and smoothness.
It is closely related to birth, marriage and funerals.
In Dong Village, "bridges" are also called "Ji" or "Jihua".
So they are used to calling it "Ji Bridge" or "Flower Bridge".
"Wind and Rain Bridge" is the core public gathering area in the village.
On weekdays, villagers will chat and talk about daily life here while creating traditional intangible cultural heritage handicrafts.
