The world-famous Potala Palace was built in 631 under the supervision of Songtsen Gampo, the 33rd Tibetan king of Tubo. With the disintegration of the Tubo Kingdom, it was severely damaged by natural disasters and man-made disasters. In 1645, the Fifth Dalai Lama rebuilt the Potala Palace to consolidate the local regime of Ganden Phodrang, which was a combination of politics and religion.
