Qinghai Lake is China's largest inland saltwater lake. Anciently known as the West Sea (according to legend, it was the home of the Little White Dragon of the West Sea), it is also known as the Fairy Sea and the Fresh Water Sea. After the Northern Wei Dynasty, it was renamed Qinghai. In Tibetan, it is called "Cowinbo," meaning "cyan lake," and in Mongolian, "Kukunor," meaning "blue sea." The name Qinghai Lake originated in the Qing Dynasty and became commonly known as Qinghai Lake after 1949. The lake covers an area of 4,283.3 square kilometers, with an average depth of 16 meters and a maximum depth of 28 meters. Its surface elevation is 3,194 meters above sea level, and its volume is 71.9 billion cubic meters.
