The Two Towers, "Le due torri", both of them leaning, are the symbol of Bologna, and probably the most prominent one. Until 1919, there were actually 5 towers in this square. Bologna was always known as the city of towers, “La Turrita”, as over the centuries, particularly between the 12th and the 13th century, the city had possibly over 200 towers.Almost all them were tall (the highest being 97 m), defensive stone towers. There are now 25 towers left without counting the hundreds of bell towers in the city. The taller one of the pair is called the Asinelli while the smaller but more leaning tower is called the Garisenda. Their names derive from the families which are traditionally credited with constructing them between 1109 and 1119.The Asinelli Tower was used by the scientists Giovanni Battista Riccioli (in 1640) and Giovanni BattistaGuglielmini (in the following century) for experiments to study the motion of heavy bodies and the earth rotation. Bologna’s towers were cited several times by Dante in the Divine Comedy and The Rhymes (a confirmation of his stay in Bologna), and by Goethe in his Italian Journey. The Two Towers have also been the subject of an eponymous poem by Giosuè Carducci as part of the Barbarian Odes. Charles Dickens wrote about the towers in his Pictures from Italy. In World War II, between 1943 and 1945, it was used as a sight post: during bombing attacks, four volunteers took post at the top to direct rescue operations to places hit by Allied bombs.Later, a RAI television relay was installed on top.Architect Minor Yamasaki is thought to have been inspired by the Towers when designing the World Trade Center during the 1960s.

The Palazzo del Podestà, in Piazza Maggiore, was the first site of the city government exercised by the mayor, his judges and officials. The Torre dell’Arengo was immediately erected alongside, a bell tower used to muster the citizens in the case of extraordinary events.Of great interest is the Voltone del Podestà with its unique acoustic effect that permits visitors to speak to each other from the opposite corners of the archway. The facade was added by Giovanni II Bentivoglio and Ginevra Sforza during their “reign” of the city. On the arches you can spot the symbols of all the noble families (and the guilds) that participated and paid, some no longer exist.

The square of Machollère is located in the center of Bologna, built in 1200, to the north is two medieval palaces built in the early 13th century, and to the south is the cathedral of St. Peterronio, which was built in 1390 AD and has not yet been completed. In the middle of the square is an open-air cinema with movies (and advertisements) every night. Bologna is my favorite Italian city, with simple and elegant architecture, clean and tidy. There is the first university in Europe, the University of Bologna. Bologna is a wealthy city, Ferrari, Maserati and other famous car brands were born here.

We visited Cinque Terre on a day bus tour from Florence and despite a confusing rushed start to the morning once we were on the bus headed for La Spezia things seemed to calm down. We were able to visit 4 of the 5 villages that make up this quaint area.Taking the train from La Spezia our first stop was Monterosso. We had lunch a little beach side restaurant. Pasta because when in Italy... From there we made our backwards stopping at Vernazza where it was a short walk down to the water from the station and the first taste of the iconic fishing village vista that is synonymous with Cinque Terre. Before moving on to Manarola and finally Riomaggiore where we were able to catch the start of a beautiful sunset. There was a lot to fit in one day especially with the lengthy distance to Florence but it was worth every minute.I would definitely look to stay in or near the villages if I were to visit again. The hiking trail across the 5 villages looks very intriguing.

A classical arena, not a Colosseum of course. Very well preserved. Tickets are a pricey one and at the end of the day we didn’t pay for the Placido Domingo show, but the arena itself.
