Cathedral of Toledo

Toledo is an ancient Spanish city, located 70 kilometers south of Madrid. The city has a long history and was once the capital of Spain. Its architecture combines Gothic, Moorish, Baroque and other styles. Toledo was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1987 for its rich historical and cultural heritage and unique urban style. 🚗 Transportation Guide There are three main modes of transportation from Madrid to the ancient city of Toledo: 1️⃣Train: From Madrid Atocha Railway Station, it takes about 30 minutes to reach Toledo Railway Station, and the ticket price is €10. Then walk to the old town in 20 minutes. 2️⃣Bus: Take the subway to Plaza Eliptica, transfer to the ALSA bus directly to TOLEDO, the round-trip fare is about 9.6 euros, and the one-way trip takes 50 minutes. I drove from Madrid to Cordoba and visited the ancient city. Due to time constraints, I only visited the cathedral, the San Martin Bridge, and the observation deck. This ancient city is still worth a day to visit.



San Martin's Bridge

Located on the west side of the ancient city of Toledo, the San Martin Bridge is a medieval bridge across the Tagus River. Construction began in the 13th century and was completed in the late 14th century. Two Gothic-style defense towers stand at the bridgehead. The five-arch stone bridge with one large arch and four small arches is similar to the Zhaozhou Bridge in my country. Looking at the stone bridge, the mottled appearance tells the vicissitudes of history, the city emblem at the bridgehead shows the immortal glory, and the monastery in the distance blooms with a tall figure...



The Alcázar

The Alcázar Castle in Toledo is located at the highest point of the ancient city. It is a castle with a long history and a tragic fate. In the third century, a Roman palace was built; in the tenth century, after Muslims conquered Toledo, they built this commanding height of the ancient city into a fortress; in the eleventh century, Christianity recaptured Toledo and built a castle here; during the reign of Carlos I in the sixteenth century, the castle was converted into a royal palace; after his successor Philip II moved the capital to Madrid, the castle lost its original important status and served as a prison, barracks, workshop and military academy. During the Spanish Civil War, the castle was severely damaged in the war; after the war, in order to commend the soldiers guarding the castle, Franco ordered the castle to be rebuilt as it was, and it has been preserved to this day. Today's castle is square, magnificent and majestic; the bottom floor of the castle has some ruins left as a memorial; the main body of the castle has become a military museum and library; the top floor of the castle has a 360° panoramic view of the beautiful scenery of the ancient city.



The cloisters and church are full of beautiful details, well worth a look. Wonderful old monastery. Although it is a bit far from the center of Toledo, it is worth visiting. The ticket was quite reasonable, only 3 euro per adult.



To visit the ancient city of Toledo, before entering the city (or after leaving the city), you must check in the Valley Watchtower. The Valley Watchtower is located in the southern mountains outside the ancient city. Arrived on the observation deck to the north, the whole view of the ancient city is unobstructed: the towering cathedral and the square castle sit on the left and right, the clear Tahoe River flows around the city, and the different buildings are scaled...



The gate of the sun (Puerta del Sol) is a city gate in Toledo, Spain, built in the late 14th century. The memorial above the arch depicts the sainthood of Il de Fonsos, the Visigoth Gothic patron saint of Toledo. The name of the gate comes from the sun and moon that were painted on both sides of the medallion. The gate is named because it faces east, where there is always a sun rising. The gate is no longer there, but the entrance is there.





Toledo City Hall

Toledo City Hall, used as a government office building, built in the 17th century, the 3-storey main building is Renaissance style, +2-storey tower with baroque spires, overflowing with a strong multi-art atmosphere. The mayor and government departments are here, and the balcony on the 3rd floor is flying four flags of the European Union, Spain, Castile, the Autonomous Region of Lamancha, and Toledo. There is a tourist service center on the first floor. Tourists can receive maps and brochures for free and visit the ancient city according to the recommended route. Tips: The town hall square is small in size and compact in architecture. It is a difficult task to take a panoramic view of the city hall.
