Ready for an adventure? (Unsplash / Joshua Earle)

There are numerous ways to enjoy a holiday - some of us love a week on a beach with a cocktail, some of us enjoy moseying around a new city, and some like 18 holes around the golf course. And while we firmly believe any trip is an 'adventure', some of us really like to take the word very literally. And we're here to help…

Your friends at Trip.com are here to provide you with a list of some of the best adventure holidays in Europe and beyond. Read on for some of the more active adventure holidays out there, complete with handy flight and hotel info too…

Hiking is surely one of the greatest ways to spend an active holiday. Active and challenging, but also hugely rewarding, and almost always with a stunning backdrop, hiking is arguably the most well-rounded of active holiday choices (if that makes sense…)

With so many hiking spots across the globe, which one to pick? Apropos to nothing, aside from its universally renowned beauty, we've settled on the Stavanger region of Norway - it's accessible from the nearby airport, but offers a wealth of hiking options, such as the famous Pulpit Rock.

Are you the kind of thrillseeker that fancies a wealth of adrenaline-spiking adventures on your holiday? If the answer is 'yes', how about heading to beautiful Tuscany in central Italy, where ziplining, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, rafting and much more are in abundance for you.

Naturally, the region - home to Pisa and Florence - is home to exquisite architecture and delectable food, so this is a truly versatile holiday destination for the adventure-lover.

Split in Croatia is something of a hub for all things adventure - fancy canyoning or cave swimming with the fam? Then click here. Fancy rock climbing, biking, or hiking? Then click here. Fancy booking your flight to Split? Then click here.

Oh and should you fancy looking at other family holidays, we have a very handy article all about it right here.

A country famous for its natural wonders, Costa Rica also houses some of the world's finest selection of adventure spots. White water rafting, kayaking, diving - it's all here, and some of the National Park's boast some of the world's highest concentrations of biodiversity.

An adventurer's paradise, absolutely teeming with natural wonder and thrilling adventure sports, Costa Rica is highly regarded for its commitment to sustainability, too.

Or snowboarding. Whichever side of the 'scooting down a snowy mountain very fast' debate you fall on, the Alps are always going to provide you with the ultimate winter sport slopes - and what's more of an adventure holiday than that?

While the choice is vast for your alpine adventure, we will highlight Chamonix, due to its fabulous winter sport reputation and proximity to Mont Blanc, the highest of the mountains in the range. A heads up - neighbouring Switzerland is home to the nearest airport, Geneva, some 55 miles (88 km) from the range.

Is surfing the 'coolest' of all the watersports? It certainly evokes a certain cool sensibility, and you don't need to venture as far as Australia or southern California to get a great place to catch waves.

The Algarve in Portugal is popular for tourists, and one reason (among many) for this is its abundance of surfing spots. One such place is Arrifana, a village on cliffs that lays claim to a stunning beach. Popular with surfers, this smallish beach is well worth the effort - you will need to go on a bit of a hike with your board to get here.

Not as 'extreme' as some of the recommendations on this list, but one that should definitely fall in the category of 'adventure'. Horseback riding is a great way to see some sights, and why not do it in one of Europe's most beautiful cities?

Go on a full-day horse riding tour to the Doñana National Park, in the village of El Rocío near Seville - and you can even book your ticket with Trip.com.

We'll be honest - when it comes to adventure travelling, and going for a hike in a National Park, the USA is just overflowing with incredible sites. Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, the Blue Mountains, Canyonlands - really there are so many to choose from.

We've selected Yosemite National Park as it's up there with any of the above for natural beauty, and (if you hire a car) around a 4 hour drive away from San Francisco. Oh, and because on Trip.com you can book a 4-hour guided tour of the park too…

The Black Forest is a beautiful, 100 mile (160 km) long expanse of green in the bottom left corner of Germany - and for those of you of a sporty disposition, it really is nirvana.

We've highlighted the Black Forest as a place to go for mountain biking, but really your options are endless here - sledding, canoeing, hiking, paddling, wakeboarding and even skiing during the winter are all adventurous pursuits possible here.

Those of you willing to travel a little - or a lot - further away for your adventure should surely consider a visit to New Zealand. The country has become a huge pilgrimage in recent years due to a certain ring-based blockbuster trilogy, but we're recommending heading to NZ for that most essential of bucket list items…

Swimming with dolphins is widely regarded as a truly magical event, and who are we to argue? Head to Tauranga in the North of the country (the closest major airport is Auckland) and get acquainted with these magical mammals - courtesy of Trip.com

Skydiving - the ultimate thrill (Unsplash / Kamil Pietrzak)

The ultimate thrill-seeking event? The truly adventurous of you will surely love to plunge from a plane - and why not do it with Thailand as your destination? A lot of rhetorical questions, so let's move on…

A short(ish) hop from Bangkok lies the gorgeous city of Pattaya - and from there you can rush towards the earth at mind-bending speed to satisfy that most intense of adrenaline rushes. You can book your skydive here as well…
