Bringing a burst of creativity to the streets of the Scottish capital, Edinburgh Festival Fringe is back this August. The world’s largest arts festival sees hundreds of thousands of people flock to the stunning city from all over the world for over three weeks of festival fun. From stand-up comedians to live music, theatre shows, circus acts, dance performances and a wide range of workshops and exhibitions, Edinburgh Festival Fringe has become one of the city’s top attractions, and it’s easy to see why. With a vision to ‘give anyone a stage and everyone a seat’, inclusivity is at the forefront of the festival’s society, with both unknown and established acts taking to the stage, and tickets for the festival accessible to everyone.
Edinburgh Festival Fringe kicks off on Friday 4th August, with an end date of Monday 28th August. Lasting just over 3 weeks, the festival will be held at various venues throughout the city, all of which are easily accessible by foot or public transport. This year’s entertainment won’t disappoint. Whether you want to laugh out loud at a comedy show, be ‘wowed’ by world-class performances, test your knowledge at a pub quiz or tap your feet to the sounds of jazz, blues, rock or opera, there’s something to keep everyone entertained. You can purchase e-tickets in advance for the shows on the official Fringe website. Alongside the shows, you can also find buskers, street performers and those typical festival stalls, all of which add to the excitement and buzz of the city.
With good transport links, getting to Edinburgh Festival Fringe is easy. If you’re travelling by train, Edinburgh Waverley station connects the city with many destinations across the UK including London, Leeds and Birmingham. You can also get a coach to Edinburgh bus station from many UK cities, too. Driving is also an option, with a range of pay-and-display parking spaces available across the city centre. If you’re coming from further afield, Edinburgh Airport is located just 8 miles away from the city centre and is easily accessible via tram. Due to the festival’s popularity, booking accommodation in advance is advised. Luckily, Edinburgh boasts a wide range of accommodation, from budget hostels to apartments, guesthouses and luxurious 5-star hotels, most of which are within walking distance of the venues.
Although held in summer, as with any British festival, you should prepare for all eventualities with both raincoats and sun cream on hand. Other practical additions to your packing list include a small secure bag, cash for the street performers and comfy shoes for walking and dancing. A portable phone charger is also always a good idea. The streets can get very busy, so it’s best to keep your phone fully charged and designate a meeting spot should you get separated from your friends or family.
Offering everything from access tickets to changing place toilets, BSL interpreted street performances and sensory backpacks, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society work hard to ensure that the event is accessible to everyone.
