It was once said about the Maldives that this is “where the blue sky and white clouds, the coconut trees and shadows, the clear water and white sand, are located in the paradise of the Indian Ocean.” This relatively small country comprises some 26 atolls. It is a place travelers yearn to visit, a place where couples venture for the perfect honeymoon, and a place to truly find rest and relaxation. In this short article, we will take a closer look at the Maldives and opportunities visitors will find there. We will profile some of the more developed atolls, and highlight some excellent sightseeing opportunities.

The Maldives are primarily divided into residential islands and tourist islands. The tourist islands feature lots of upscale resorts catering to luxuriant travelers. Tourism is, naturally, the economic driver on the tourist islands with facilities and amenities there catering to those needs. On the residential islands, locals ply various trades mostly related to fishing. Obviously one could spend their entire time at the beaches and spas found on the tourist islands; however, your trip will be much more rewarding if you experience life in the Maldives from a local’s perspective.

1. Male and Hulhule Island

Velana International Airport is the primary gateway into the Maldives. It is located on Hulhule Island and connected via road and ferry links to nearby Male, the country’s capital and most populous island. Male is a great place to get acquainted with the local culture and secure onward transportation to other atolls. The island’s colorful buildings make for great pictures. Take a stroll through Republic Square and visit the nearby fish market. Afterwards, venture past the Grand Friday Mosque, National Art Gallery, and Old Friday Mosque. The latter is a UNESCO-recognized example of Maldivian architecture. Finally, find a quaint cafe, some good food, and enjoy the lovely sunset.

2. Maldives’ Romantic Side

The Maldives have long been a favored wedding and honeymoon destination. Many villas offer secluded getaways where couples can consummate their relationship in the relative privacy afforded by lush tropical groves. Resorts attract traveling couples by providing on-premises venues for ceremonies. An odd, if romantic option exists for those not exactly ready to formally tie the knot. Resorts throughout the Maldives are licensed to perform so-called “Symbolic Weddings,” which allow couples not yet married in their home countries take part in a ceremonial commitment to commemorate their romantic bond. Symbolic weddings are not legally binding and are often favored by couples looking to renew vows or experience a more formal wedding ceremony in the spectacular surroundings on the islands.

There is no shortage of world class resorts in the Maldives. In fact the trouble is often narrowing down the myriad options. Consider your budget and the amenities you desire when searching for accommodation. Popular islands include Maafushi, which is relatively close and easy to access from Male. Fihalholi, which is part of the same atoll is also popular. For something more private and secluded, expect to spend a bit more. One of the most important developments in the past several years was the decision to open many of the country’s residential islands to tourism. Locals have been allowed to build guesthouses and smaller accommodations popular with visitors who either cannot or do not want to spend a small fortune. Rasdhoo is a good example of this trend. Here you can find plenty of local accommodation that will allow you to access some great diving and snorkeling locations.

4. Relaxation and Spa Treatments

Most major resorts offer excellent spas. A thoroughly unique and memorable experience can be found at Huvafen Spa on Huvafen Fushi, part of the North Male Atoll. Here you can visit the world’s first underwater spa. Huvafen’s underwater treatment rooms offer panoramic coral reef views and soothing designs inspired by the colors and textures of the sea. Meditation and yoga are popular given how the serine aquatic environment allows for that extra relaxation. Huvafen Spa offers plenty to do back on land, with individual and couples treatments available. It’s an unforgettable place to visit.

5. Fun in the Sun and Surf

Between April and October, the Maldives is a veritable surf paradise. Swells occur regularly during these months and increase during the monsoons. In the Northern Atolls, Pasta Point, Chickens, Coke’s, Jailbreaks, and Sultans are all internationally recognized big wave breaks. Finally, given the local reliance on fishing-related industries, there are a fair number of charter fishing outfits capable of ferrying guests around the Maldives looking for the perfect catch. If you’re up for it, try the night fishing. At dusk, take a fishing boat to one of the coral reefs. While watching the moon rise, enjoy a delicious meal, then spend the twilight hours on the calm waters with your line cast. It’s a great way to enjoy this beautiful ocean environment.

The Maldives are one of the world’s great travel destinations. There is much to admire and appreciate about this island nation. Those venturing here will form the memories of a lifetime. Whether you are looking for that perfect honeymoon getaway or just trying to Hang Ten on a big wave, you’ll find what you’re looking for and more in the Maldives. Come find out what makes this place so special. Just be careful because once you arrive, there’s a good chance you won’t want to leave.
