Runners taking on the marathon

Runners taking on the marathon

…And by that title, we mean you probably don't want to do all 12. However, with all the trials and tribulations of the past couple of years, it's nice to be able to move around again - and we do mean that very literally. Because now, those of you fit enough to be able to run 26.2 miles (42.2 km) can finally do so. Marathons, complete with crowds, are back!

Looking for running inspiration? Or want to cheer on some brave souls, either locally or in a different land? Either way, here are 12 for your consideration in 2022...

September 25

We'll start with one of the so-called 'big 6' marathons, and a run that's widely considered one of the world's best. Meandering through the beautiful German capital, the BMW Berlin Marathon takes in many of the city's historic sites, and is completely flat too - making it, ahem, 'easy'…

If you're looking for places to stay in Berlin, check out the 4-star Novotel Berlin am Tiergarten, or 3-star Hotel Neuer Fritz Berlin, both located close to the marathon's start line.

October 2

Tower Bridge, London

Tower Bridge, London

You may have heard of this one - another member of the 'big 6' and one of the best-known of all of the long runs, the TCS London Marathon is being restored to its former glory for 2022 after 2 years of restrictions. Starting from Greenwich, where the world clock is centred, the main milestones include the Cutty Sark, The Shard, Big Ben and, of course, Buckingham Palace.

Need a hotel to crash at? If you're looking for hotels in London, may we recommend Radisson Blu Edwardian New Providence Wharf Hotel London as a place near the starting point. Alternatively, try Hub by Premier InnLondon Westminster, Westminster Abbey for a venue close to the finish line.

August 20

In our opinion, travellers fall into 2 broad categories: those who have been to Iceland and say it's amazing - and those who want to go to Iceland. Whichever category you fall into, you should go (back). If you also want to tick 'run a marathon' off the bucket list, then the Reykjavik Marathon is for you, as the incredible scenery will keep you company.

The event coincides with the city's Cultural Night Festival - so to celebrate both, be sure to book your hotel in Reykjavik.

September 9

Jungfrau

Jungfrau

The Jungfrau Marathon is touted as the most beautiful marathon in the world - and we would find it hard to disagree. Even if you don't get to (or wish to) run the 26-mile+ route, you should visit this part of the world, just to drink in the incredible surroundings.

Check out our article about the Jungfraujoch to find out more - it includes some of our best hotel recommendations in the area, as well as how to get there from other parts of Switzerland. Speaking of which...

September 25

Runners, the perfect opportunity to visit the Polish capital is to sync it up with this event. The Warsaw Marathon takes you through the city's incredible architecture, which encapsulates its status as a European 'gateway city' - the crossroads between the continent's cultural west and east.

Hotels in Warsaw? Let's point you in the direction of the Hotel Polonia Palace and the fantastically priced Hotel Reytan, both highly rated by Trip.com users.

October 9

Running a marathon alongside sea and river for the entire duration? Well, that'll be a good way to get through it. Or indeed, a great opportunity to just appear and cheer on competitors. Either way, the EDP Lisbon Marathon is one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the world - runners, stick this on your to-do list.

If you need recommendations for hotels in Lisbon to rest and recover, 5-star luxury comes in the form of Iberostar Selection Lisboa. For a more budget-friendly alternative, try the highly rated Hotel Travel Park Lisboa.

October 16

Amsterdam city centre

Amsterdam city centre

Who doesn't love Amsterdam? It's always a wonderful city to visit, whether it's to come for a fun weekend, a romantic city break - or even a 42 km run.

Beginning and ending at the Olympic Stadium, the TCS Amsterdam Marathon goes through other famous sites such as the Rijksmuseum, the winding Amstel, and the ever-gorgeous Vondelpark. Whether you're a participant or observer, be sure to head to the Dutch capital.

For hotels in Amsterdam to rest your weary bones, try the Olympic Hotel Amsterdam - right next to the marathon's start/finish line - or the Alfred Hotel, Amsterdam, closer to the Vondelpark.

October 30

If you've ever been to the capital of the emerald isle, you'll attest to that indefinable quality - its all-round 'vibe'. So if you want camaraderie when doing your long run, the Irish Life Dublin Marathon could be just what you're looking for. Lying in the heart of the historic city centre, you'll see many of the Irish capital's 'greatest hits' when running around.

Runners/supporters needing a place to stay in Dublin should check out Zanzibar Locke close to the city centre - alternatively, check out Handel's Hotel.

November 6

New York Marathon

New York Marathon

Another one of the 'majors', the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon is one of the world's best-known and most iconic. The route itself goes through all 5 of the city's boroughs, meaning that at some point you'll be in eyeshot of pretty much all the Big Apple's major landmarks. And you'll have around 55,000 others around you to drink in the moment…

Even if you're just a casual observer who happens to be in NYC during the event, you'll want a place to stay. Click here to check out our list of hotels in New York City.

November 6

Fancy the chance to say you've run between 2 continents? The Istanbul Marathon is the only run of its kind to offer such bragging rights, with Turkey's largest city serving as the official gateway between Asia and Europe. This means that you can cross the Bosphorus Strait and officially say that you've jogged between continents…

Want a place to stay in Istanbul? Click here to see our list of hotels in the Turkish capital.

November 12 - 13

The marathon that started them all. Based on the ancient story that Pheidippides ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greeks' victory over the Persians, the Athens Marathon follows numerous traditions to stay true to the legend. Be warned though - this one is tough even by marathon standards, due to its long incline...

If you want to stay near the famous birthplace of the modern marathon, check out the Marathon Beach Resort. If you'd like a hotel in Athens's city centre with a bit more luxury after your tough run, stay at Divani Palace Acropolis.

December 4

Valencia Marathon

Valencia

Traditionally seen as the last marathon event of the year, the beauty of Valencia makes it the ideal destination for such a swansong. Ending next to the famous Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe, the Valencia Marathon is hugely admired as a road race - and will be a great way to round off your year, as you'll have earned your festive treats a few weeks later...

Thinking of partaking? You'll need a hotel in Valencia. The Holiday Inn Express Ciudad de las Ciencias, an IHG Hotel is located close to the finish line. Alternatively, the 4-star Vincci Mercat Hotel Valencia is highly rated by Trip.com users.
