Where is Dubai
Looking over the majestic Arabian Desert in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai is home to a growing population of expats from around the world. In fact, it recently hosted its jubilee celebration, marking 50 years of the formation of the Emirates.

Not many know, however, that this urban miracle was once an ordinary fishing village, with an economy that heavily relied on manual labour to harvest wild pearls from the ocean. Today, it has grown into not only a world-renowned financial hub, but is the wealthiest of all 7 Emirates.

Shopping: Dubai Mall and Souks

From malls to markets, Dubai is a shopper’s paradise that caters to every budget. You can indulge in high-end retail therapy just as easily as you bargain for traditional spices and souvenirs.

One of the biggest attractions of this desert city is its souks. The gold souk at Dubai Creek is the world's largest gold market. Known for quality and variety, you’ll find ornaments of all shapes, sizes and colours. Although, avoid buying in bulk - you may be stopped at customs in the airport.

Tucked away in one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, Old Souk in Deira is the largest spice market in the UAE. It teems with colourful stalls selling aromatic, locally produced spices. Make sure to fill your carts with saffron, henna and cinnamon on your visit here.

Next to the Burj Khalifa is Dubai Mall, one of the biggest in the world. It features over 1200 luxury stores as well as an array of eateries and entertainment, including Dubai Aquarium and Dubai Ice Rink. It is also surrounded by some of the city’s sought-after attractions like the famous fountain show and the Opera District.
