Highly recommended! Every cave is worth exploring in detail, but be sure to go when it&#39;s less crowded. We went on October 6th, and while it wasn&#39;t particularly crowded, there were still long lines for caves 3 and 6, and once inside, the crowds prevented us from fully appreciating the scenery.

Secondly, be sure to bring your own camera, or you won&#39;t be able to capture its beauty. My biggest mistake was not bringing my camera.

It&#39;s worth seeing. I went there and lined up to go up. Overall, Datong&#39;s scenic spots and transportation are well planned. Although the destination is not in the city, it is very comfortable to travel independently.

It&#39;s said that Hengshan is the most down-to-earth of the Five Great Mountains&mdash;it&#39;s free of the numerous rules and regulations of Huangshan, nor the intense pressures of Huashan. If you want to take it easy, you can take the cable car, and if you want to challenge yourself, you can hike the entire route. Even a lazy hiker like me can handle it with ease.

🚡 Tour Guide:
We chose the &quot;easy route&quot; cable car. We took the scenic shuttle bus to the entrance of Hengshan Scenic Area and headed straight to the cable car station without hesitation! The one-way ride cost 70 yuan and took 10 minutes (though lines for the cable car can start at half an hour, and even worse on national holidays). From the window, we could see a small temple hidden in a crevice. After landing, we walked a short, short path to Hengzong Hall, where you can take photos, restock supplies, and rest. Then, we climbed the stone steps for about another 40 minutes to the summit.

The hardcore hike is said to take at least 4.5-5 hours, but it&#39;s both tiring and enjoyable. We definitely missed it. For those with strong legs and feet, this is a must-try. As we were descending the cable car, we even saw a four-year-old boy pulling his mother and grandmother up the mountain. Amazing!

🎫 Tickets:
Although both Hengshan Mountain and the Hanging Temple are part of the Hengshan Scenic Area, tickets must be purchased separately. You can take a scenic area shuttle bus between the two. Peak season tickets to Hengshan Mountain are 45 yuan, and a one-way cable car ticket is 70 yuan. Hanging Temple entrance is 15 yuan, and a boarding pass is 100 yuan. Be sure to book in advance at the Hengshan Scenic Area GZH. If you can&#39;t get boarding passes online, you can queue up on site. However, the combination of buying tickets and queuing for the boarding pass is said to offer a 4-5 hour &quot;excitement,&quot; so we opted for the distant view.

⚠️Tips:
1️⃣ There&#39;s a 39 yuan direct bus from downtown Datong to the Hengshan Scenic Area. If you&#39;re driving, stop at the visitor center, which costs 10-20 yuan a day. The visitor center is 3-5 kilometers from the base of the mountain. Generally, private vehicles or chartered vehicles are not allowed up the mountain, especially to the base of the Hanging Temple (which is actually only a 15-minute flat walk). 2️⃣ Be sure to wear non-slip sneakers, as some of the trails are quite steep, so a light jacket is essential for both wind and sun protection.
3️⃣ There are few food options at the mountainside shops, so bring two bottles of water and some snacks, and then grab something like Hunyuan jelly after descending the mountain.

Overall, the most relaxing thing about Hengshan is that you can skip the cable car if you want, and no one will rush you if you want to hike. It&#39;s worth the trip!

D1️⃣4️⃣🚗9/10 5-kilometer walk in Datong Ancient City
Huayan Temple - Bell Tower - Four Archways - Drum Tower - Shanhua Ancient Temple - Nine Dragon Screen - Fahua Temple. Walk over 200 meters. Take bus No. 38 to Yangmen South Station for 8 stops to the intersection of Taihe Road and Yunshan Street, then walk over 600 meters.
1. Huayan Temple. See the previous article for details.
2. Datong Ancient City Bell Tower, located in the center of Qingyuan Street, was originally built in the fifth year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1372). It was destroyed in 1951 and rebuilt in 2015. It features a Ming Dynasty-style hip-and-gable roof and pavilion-style building. Together with the Drum Tower, it embodies the rhythm of urban life, with its &quot;morning bells and evening drums.&quot; Free and open 24 hours. 3. The Four Archways of Datong Ancient City, originally built during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1372) by General Xu Da, were built to demonstrate military might and extol meritorious service. Demolished in 1954 for urban renewal, they were rebuilt to their original appearance in 2012. The rebuilt structure is 19.2 meters wide and 14.43 meters high, featuring four four-pillar, three-story, gabled archways spanning the street. It is now a central landmark of Datong Ancient City and is open 24 hours a day.
4. Shanhua Ancient Temple was first built during the Kaiyuan reign of the Tang Dynasty and was named Kaiyuan Temple. It was renamed Da Pu&#39;en Temple during the Later Jin Dynasty of the Five Dynasties. Reconstruction was overseen by Monk Yuanman of the Jin Dynasty. In 1445, Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty bestowed the name Shanhua Temple, a name used to this day. Opening hours: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM. Admission: &yen;40 per person. Free for those over 60.
Highlight 1: The Five Dragon Wall: This colorful glazed screen wall, built in 1595 during the 23rd year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, originally served as a barrier in front of the mountain gate of Xingguo Temple in the south of the city. It was relocated to the west wing of Shanhua Temple in 1980 and is now located south of the square in front of the mountain gate. The wall is 19.9 meters long, 7 meters high, and 1.48 meters thick. It features a Sumeru pedestal, five four-clawed golden dragon reliefs, and a faux wooden top. Five yellow glazed dragons are inlaid on the back and sides, symbolizing auspiciousness and protection.
Highlight 2: The Heavenly King Hall, the largest existing mountain gate of the Jin Dynasty. The Four Heavenly Kings within the hall are relics from the Ming Dynasty and symbolize favorable weather and good harvests.
Highlight 3: The Three Saints Hall&#39;s treasured Jin Dynasty stone stele.
Highlight 4: The Liao Dynasty colored sculptures in the Main Hall. 5. Nine-Dragon Screen: The Nine-Dragon Screen in Datong, Shanxi Province, is China&#39;s largest and oldest extant glazed dragon screen. Built in 1392, the 25th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, it served as the screen wall for the residence of Prince Zhu Gui of Dai. Composed of 426 glazed panels, it features nine giant dragon reliefs. Along with the Nine-Dragon Screen in the Forbidden City, it is considered one of the &quot;Three Great Nine-Dragon Screens in China&quot; and a valuable artifact for the study of Ming Dynasty architecture and glazed craftsmanship.
6. Fahua Temple: Originally built in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty, it was rebuilt on its original site in 2008. Its four-courtyard layout blends Han, Tibetan, Mongolian, and Indian styles. Its circular bell and drum tower resembles a yurt, and its murals include &quot;Buddha Assembly&quot; and &quot;Water and Land Dharma Assembly.&quot; The core cultural relic, the Fahua Pagoda, is entirely white, with iron bells dangling from the top of the pagoda and a pedestal inlaid with yellow, green, and purple glazed tiles, symbolizing Buddha&#39;s virtue and longevity. It is the only Ming Dynasty Lamaist pagoda in Datong (18 meters high) with a covered bowl. Admission is free and open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The content is very rich, but it was too crowded during the summer vacation. I rented an electronic guide, which was quite useless. The Mulan exhibition was not worth it. It was not the most interesting museum I have ever visited.
