The history of the Wäldchestag cannot be definitively determined. 
Traditionally, Frankfurt's craftsmen held large festive processions on Whitsunday, and many craftsmen's festivals were held in the spring, which is believed to be mainly due to the fact that the administrative year of the free imperial city lasted from May 1 to April 30, a fact that was not changed until 1729. 
The beginning of the third Whitsunday may also be confirmed by the custom of driving the cattle out to pasture for the first time after Whitsunday, and farm workers and maids would also go out with them to enjoy "food and drink". Street names in Frankfurt, such as "Pfingstweide" (Whitson's Meadow), are mentioned as early as 1300 and still bear witness to this ancient Whitsun tradition.
