Capsule Venice is pleased to present Luca Campestri’s (b. 1999, Florence, Italy, now lives in Bologna) first solo exhibition at the gallery, “Breadcrumb Trail”. The works in the exhibition construct nocturnal landscapes through a series of narrative fragments, inhabited by shadowy, sentient or hostile beings. The exhibition recreates the core plot of the Grimm fairy tale “Hänsel and Gretel”, placing the audience at the center of the story. In the fairy tale, a brother and a sister are abandoned in the forest by their parents. Although they found their way home the day before by marking their way back with pebbles, this time they discover that the breadcrumbs they used to mark the way back home have been eaten by nocturnal animals, and they can’t help but reveal their despair. The exhibition explores such a situation - the means of determining direction and orientation may be fragile and unreliable, and reflects on the meaning of finding a way home, especially when "home" is not an ideal place to go, but may be the source of loss. The work makes multiple references to the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel" at the narrative, conceptual and formal levels, inspiring thoughts on hauntology, visual modes and the medium of photography.
