We are thrilled to welcome Suzanne Joinson to West Kirby to celebrate the publication of her memoir, THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS Join us on Tuesday 1 October, 7pm when we'll be welcoming bestselling author, Suzanne Joinson to West Kirby, to celebrate the publication of her incredible memoir, THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS. Suzanne will be reading from the book, before being in conversation with Jordan from the bookshop, answering questions from the audience and signing copies of THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS. Tickets are £6/ £15 (inc. a copy of the book) and complimentary drinks will be provided. This event is non-refundable, and if you can't make the talk, please email hello@thewestkirbybookshop.com to reserve a signed/dedicated copy of the book. About THE MUSEUM OF LOST AND FRAGILE THINGS: ‘Inspiring and heart breaking. The best evocation of complex mother, daughter relationships I have ever read.’ --- Lily Dunn ‘A gripping portrait of a life, a relationship, a mind as it stretches and stretches.’ --- Dr Noreen Masud ‘Joinson’s memoir is a kind of reverse excavation where she hunts down objects to then bury them through her generous prose. Her hunt for material proof of a past that constantly shifts and slips is riveting, sad, but in many ways triumphant.’ --- Jen Calleja 'There’s such a lot to say about this book; Joinson’s evocation of a northern working class childhood, a life lived inside a cult and an adult struggle to understand those identities in a way that is truthful to her own experience and makes careful room for the perspective of others was something I could really personally connect with.’ --- Jenn Ashworth ‘In this haunting, elegantly written memoir, a writer looks back on a childhood lived at the knife-edge of existentialism, caught between the adults in her life, who will sacrifice everything to their predatory cult leader in exchange for promises of transcendence and immortality, and the oppressive norms of Thatcher-era Britain. Joinson powerfully evokes the sublime terror, beauty, and magic of girlhood, and audits complicated family bonds and rifts with stunning tenderness and clarity.’ --- May-Lan Tan Suzanne Joinson grew up in a 1980s council estate in Crewe, where her parents were followers of The Divine Light Mission cult. This clash of class and counterculture destroyed her family, leaving a legacy of turmoil and poverty. Years later, she attempts to reclaim what she’s lost and piece together the impact of a childhood infused with esoteric yoga practices, psychedelic encounters, and meditation techniques. The Museum of Lost and Fragile Things explores the realm of mother-daughter relationships and inherited class-based trauma, in a moving, delicately-woven account of coming to terms with a complicated past. About SUZANNE JOINSON: Suzanne Joinson is the author of two novels, A Lady Cyclist’s Guide to Kashgar and The Photographer’s Wife. Her books are translated into fourteen languages, and she was a National Bestseller in the US. Suzanne won the New Writing Ventures Award, was longlisted for the IMPAC International Literary Fiction Award, and is a member of the Folio Academy. She has been published in The New York Times, the Guardian, and Conde Nast Traveller. She lives with her family in Sussex. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite

Join us on Wednesday 16 October, 7pm, for a wonderful evening discussing everyone's favourite snack, with time for questions from the audience and a chance for Natalie to sign copies of CRUNCH. Tickets are £6/ £20 (inc. a copy of the book). Complimentary drinks will be provided, alongisde a selection of crisps! Tickets are non-refundable and if you can't make the event and would like a dedicated/signed copy of CRUNCH, please get in touch. About CRUNCH: A cultural history of the nation's favourite snack. We are a nation of crisp obsessives. Squashed into sandwiches on our lunch breaks and torn-open as centrepieces on pub tables, we buy tens of millions of packets every single day. But how did the humble potato snack become a national dish? CRUNCH: AN ODE TO CRISPS is journalist Natalie Whittle's love letter to the salty siren. She traces their evolution from the simplicity of salt sachets in the early 20th century, to 80s childhood favourites such as Hula Hoops, to the popularity of 'hand-cooked' gourmet flavours today. Along the way, Natalie will get to the heart of her own lifelong passion for crisps - exploring why they are bound up in ideas of childhood, nostalgia and comfort. Featuring crisp collectors, potato growers, flavour wizards and more, CRUNCH is a moreish read spanning 150 years of crisp history. About NATALIE WHITTLE: Natalie Whittle is a writer and editor based in Glasgow. Born and raised in South Wales, she read English Literature at University College London, and lived in Paris for three years working as a Time Out Paris journalist. She worked for 15 years at the Financial Times in London, where she held editing roles across the magazine and arts sections of FT Weekend. As the FT's food and drink editor, she won an award from the Guild of Food Writers in 2015 and also collaborated with Penguin Random House to produce a compilation of the FT's gastronomic interviews, 'Lunch with the FT: A Second Helping' in 2019. Arts Theater
We're thrilled to be welcoming one of our favourite children's authors, Catherine Jacob to the bookshop, to celebrate the publication of DOCTOR FAIRY TALE! Join us on Saturday 26th October between 1-3pm, when Catherine will be us, signing and personalising copies of DOCTOR FAIRYTALE, chatting with our younger readers and even treating us to a story or two. This is an informal, free, drop-in session, so do stop by with your little ones! If you can't make it on the day and would like a signed/personalised copy of DOCTOR FAIRYTALE, get in touch and we'll arrange this for you. See you there! About DOCTOR FAIRYTALE: Join Doctor Fairytale and her sidekick Nurse Pup as they visit poorly fairytale patients who need their help! My name is Doctor Fairytale, I'm always super busy. My list of patients is so long, it sometimes makes me dizzy! In a magical land full of familiar faces, Doctor Fairytale and her dog, Nurse Pup, travel far and wide to help the injured and poorly! Rapunzel's head is hurting from her mother climbing her long locks, Goldilocks has splinters in her bottom from the Bears' broken chairs, and Cinderella has blistered toes from walking home without a shoe! But no matter the bump or bruise – and no matter how mischievous the patient! – kind and capable Doctor Fairytale is ready with her doctor's bag to lend a helping hand. About CATHERINE JACOB: Catherine is a writer, award-winning television journalist and mum – of three children and two Labradoodle pups. She loves to write in rhyme and takes inspiration for story ideas from her own children. Along with a number of rhyming picture books, Catherine is also the author of a series of chapter books and her middle grade novel is a work in progress! She lives and writes in a very old, higgledy piggledy cottage in a village outside York. When not writing she loves singing, playing netball and going on muddy dog walks. Follow her on X as @CathJacobNews and on Instagram as @CatherineJacobWriter. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite
