We're thrilled to welcome cultural historian, Tiffany Watt Smith to the bookshop to celebrate the publication of her latest book, Bad Friend: A century of revolutionary friendships. Join us on Wednesday 7th May at 7pm when Tiffany will be in conversation about the book, before answering questions from the audience and signing copies of Bad Friend. Tickets are £6 general admission or £22 including a copy of the book. Complimentary drinks will also be provided. Tickets are non-refundable and if you can't attend and would like to reserve a signed copy of the book, do get in touch. We look forward to seeing you there! About Bad Friend: 'Beautiful, generous, gentle.' HANNAH DAWSON 'Thrilling and unexpected.' DAISY HAY 'Compelling.' JOE MORAN A rebellious new history of female friendship and timely reclamation of the 'bad friend'. Move over idealised BFFs, glossy gal pals and indestructible work wives. Meet the bad friends. The dangerously romantic school girls of the 1900s. The office gossips of the 1930s. The mum cliques of the 1950s. The angry activists of the 1970s. The coven - women who choose to live together in old age - of the present day. These 'bad' friends broke the rules about femininity they didn't write. Their relationships were controlled, patrolled and judged too intimate, too consuming and in some cases, too powerful. In this history of women's friendship, celebrated cultural historian Tiffany Watt Smith reckons with the ways we understand this complex and vital connection. She takes us from Japan to the Ivory Coast, The Mindy Project to Zadie Smith's Swing Time, from prisons to film sets to hospital wards and elder communities, untangling the assumptions about good and bad friends we live by. Weaving together history, interviews and memoir, Bad Friend offers what's long overdue: a more expansive, more rebellious vision of friendship fit for twenty-first-century life. About Tiffany Watt Smith: Tiffany Watt Smith is the author of The Book of Human Emotions and Schadenfreude. She has been a recipient of multiple awards and prizes including from the Wellcome Trust, the British Academy and in 2019 was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize for her work. She frequently gives public talks, including a TED talk, 'The History of Emotion Emotions' viewed more than 4.5 million times. She is Reader (Emerita) in Cultural History at Queen Mary University of London, where she ran the Centre for the History of Emotions. In 2024, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. You can find her on Substack The Future Feeling and on X @DrTiffWattSmith Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite

We look forward to seeing you there! About Calls May be Recorded for Training and Monitoring Purposes: ‘This book is filled with brilliant dialogue, unexpected turns, some very dirty talk with sudden bursts of hilarity, and then fierce sadness. It exudes dark energy. It is highly original. It gives pleasure on every page.‘—Colm Tóibín, author ofBrooklyn and Long Island ‘Raucous, incisive and wholly original, the world of Volckmer’s novel lays bare modern life’s gross indignations, mordant desires and naked ambitions with wit and clarity.’ —Eley Williams, author ofModerate to Poor, Occasionally Good In a London call centre, Jimmie helps holiday makers with myriad problems, but he is hardly a model employee. He doesn’t simply provide customer service to his clients and advice to his colleagues, he gets involved in their fantasies and frustrations, and now he’s about to be hauled up in front of the boss. From perfecting his roles as an undertaker and as a clown to performing duties above and beyond his employment contract, he debates the importance of the optimum shade for lipstick and bathroom walls, the pros and cons of nudist versus textile, as well as the psychological impacts of an Italian mother and an emotional support animal. This is the second, ribald, scatological novel from the brilliant author of The Appointment. Jimmie’s sly, sharp, melancholy insights into the indignities of a world which aims to eliminate the human will make you laugh, weep and never look the same way at an electric carving knife again. About Katharina Volckmer: Katharina Volckmer was born in Germany in 1987. She now lives in London where she works for a literary agency. Her first novel The Appointment has been translated into over 15 languages and has been adapted for the stage and radio in several countries. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite

A perfect fever dream of a book.' --- Heather Darwent, author of The Things We Do to Our Friends 'Unflinching, uncompromising, and unforgettable. Agustina Bazterrica shines a light at the end of the brutal and bleak path we are on so that maybe, just maybe, we can turn around and forge a new one.' --- Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World A fearsomely dark, incantatory new dystopia set in a post-apocalyptic convent from the author of viral sensation Tender is the Flesh In the House of the Sacred Sisterhood, the unworthy live in fear of the Superior Sister's whip. Seething with resentment, they plot against each other and await who will ascend to the level of the Enlightened - and who will suffer the next exemplary punishment. Risking her life, one of the unworthy keeps a diary in secret. Slowly, memories surface from a time before the world collapsed, before the Sacred Sisterhood became the only refuge. Then Lucía arrives. She, too, is unworthy - but she is different. And her presence brings a single spark of hope to a world of darkness. About Agustina Bazterrica: Agustina Bazterrica is an Argentinian novelist and short-story writer. She is a central figure in the Buenos Aires literary scene, working as a cultural organiser and workshop curator. The West Kirby Bookshop are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed Mexican writer, Guadalupe Nettel to the bookshop, to celebrate the UK publication of her short story collection, The Accidentals (translated by Rosalind Harvey). Join us on Thursday 5th June at 7pm, when Guadalupe will be in conversation about the book, answering questions from the audience, and signing copies of The Accidental. Tickets are £6 general admission or £15 including a copy of the book. Complimentary drinks will be provided on the night. Tickets are non-refundable but if you can't make the event and would like to reserve a signed/dedicated of the book, do get in touch. We look forward to seeing you there! About The Accidentals: ‘Guadalupe Nettel yet again walks into uncertain terrain with these mysterious stories. There are secrets everywhere, she says, especially in life’s most intimate and familiar aspects. The Accidentals never loses its sense of things being out of joint, and Nettel explores these fears with calm and with beauty.’--- Mariana Enríquez, author of Our Share of Night ‘I adored this collection, it spread its roots out within me. Nettel is an extraordinary writer.’ --- Daisy Johnson, author of The Hotel ‘Nettel is one of the leading lights in contemporary Latin American literature…. I envy how naturally she makes use of language; her resistance to ornamentation and artifice; and the almost stoic fortitude with which she dispenses her profound and penetrating knowledge of human nature.’ --- Valeria Luiselli, author of Lost Children Archive ‘I love the work of Guadalupe Nettel, one of Mexico’s greatest living writers. Her fiction is brilliant and original, always suffused with sensuality and strange science.’ --- Paul Theroux, author ofThe Mosquito Coast When an albatross strays too far from its home, or loses its bearings, it becomes an ‘accidental’, an unmoored wanderer. The protagonists of these eight stories each find the ordinary courses of their lives disrupted by an unexpected event and are pushed into unfamiliar terrain: a girl encounters her uncle in hospital, who was cast out of the family for reasons unknown; a menacing force hovers over a fracturing family on a rural holiday; a couple and their children inhabit a stifling world where it is better to be asleep than awake; a man’s desire for a solution to his marital dissatisfaction has unforeseen consequences. Deft and disquieting, oscillating between the real and the fantastical, The Accidentals is the brilliant new book from International Booker-shortlisted duo Guadalupe Nettel and Rosalind Harvey. About Guadalupe Nettel: Guadalupe Nettel is a Mexican author of award-winning novels and short story collections. Her work has been translated into more than twenty languages and adapted for theatre and film. Still Born, her most recent novel, was shortlisted for the 2023 International Booker Prize. In 2008 she received a PhD in Literature from the EHESS in Paris. She has edited cultural and literary magazines such as Número Cero and Revista de la Universidad de México. She lives in Paris as a writer in residence at the Columbia University Institute for Ideas and Imagination. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite

Please note that tickets are non-refundable and if you can't make the event and would like to reserve a signed & dedicated copy of The Persians, do get in touch. About The Persians: 'A wonderful multi-generational family drama with characters you really care about. I'm still thinking about them now. I enjoyed it enormously.' --- Marian Keyes ‘An ambitious, glorious feat. Five women's voices become one irresistible whole in this darkly funny, richly satisfying, wonderful debut.’ --- Sarah Winman ‘At once funny and profound, sprawling and personal, The Persians questions history’s grip on our lives―is it possible to free ourselves from the past, and do we even want to? A gloriously engrossing debut.’ --- Tash Aw A darkly funny, life-affirming debut novel following five women from three generations of a once illustrious Iranian family as they grapple with revolutions personal and political. Meet the women of the Valiat family. In Iran, they were somebodies. In America, they're nobodies. First there is Elizabeth, the regal matriarch with the famously large nose, who remained in Tehran despite the revolution. She lives alone in a shabby apartment except when she is visited by Niaz, her young, Islamic-law-breaking granddaughter, who takes her partying with a side of purpose, and somehow manages to survive. Across the ocean in America, Elizabeth’s daughters have built new lives for themselves. There’s Shirin, a charismatic and flamboyantly high-flying event planner in Houston, who considers herself the family's future; and Seema, a dreamy idealist turned bored housewife languishing in the privileged hills of Los Angeles. And then there's the other granddaughter, Bita, a disillusioned law student spending her days in New York trying to find deeper meaning by giving away her worldly belongings. When an annual vacation in Aspen goes wildly awry and Shirin ends up being bailed out of jail by Bita, the family's brittle upper class veneer is cracked wide open. Soon, Shirin must embark upon a grand quest to restore the family name to its former glory. But what does that mean in a country where the Valiats never even mattered? Can they bring their old inheritance into a new tomorrow together? Spanning from 1940s Iran into a splintered 2000s, these five women are pulled apart and brought together by revolutions personal and political. Tickets are £6 standard admission, £22 including a copy of Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line. Complimentary drinks will also be provided. Please note that this event is non-refundable and if you can't make the talk and would like to reserve a signed/ dedicated copy of the book, email hello@thewestkirbybookshop.com and we'll be able to help. We look forward to seeing you there! About Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line: 'Compelling, funny, intelligent . . . Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line is a remarkable piece of work . . . A gift for those of us who have lived in our queer skins for many decades, and for young lesbians who are looking for a primer in lesbian history, an understanding of what it means to look for identity and place in our community.' ― Kerry Hudson,Observer 'It would be hard not to love a book with this title and happily, Elizabeth Lovatt has done it proud . . . This is a warm, thoughtful book.' ― London Standard 'Deliciously informative and rigorously researched, this book imagines the often invisible lives and denied passions of callers to the Lesbian Line, as well as tracing the author's own coming out story. I loved it.' ― Julia Bell, author of DIRTY WORK With warmth and humour, Elizabeth Lovatt reimagines the women who both called and volunteered for the Lesbian Line in the 1990s while also tracing her own journey from accidentally coming out to disastrous dates to finding her chosen family. With callers and agents alike dealing with first crushes and breakups, sex and marriage, loneliness and illness (or simply the need to know the name of a gay bar on a night out), this is a celebration of the ordinary lives of queer women. Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line is a timely and vital exploration of how lesbian identity continues to remake and redefine itself in the 21st century and where it might lead us in the future. About Elizabeth Lovatt: Elizabeth Lovatt is a writer of fiction and creative non-fiction currently living in London. In 2019, she was writer-in-residence for Islington Pride and the ruckus! archive. In 2020, she was part of Penguin Books’ #WriteNow mentorship scheme.
