Have you always wanted to learn to draw and paint, but you are not sure where to start? Then these are the perfect classes for you. Over the 10 weeks of this course you will be introduced to art through the understanding of materials, composition, techniques and different approaches. This course is suitable for both beginners and students who have already some experience with drawing and sketching. Our art tutor Marina will explain, demonstrate and guide you through every step of the way. For any returning students, we will be looking at subjects in more depth. From introduction to a completed piece: This course is held over 10 weeks where we will first be exploring and experimenting sketching with watercolour pencils and later moving on to painting with watercolour. Watercolour pencils are perfect to use because they are adaptable, clean and portable. Though they are similar to normal pencils, it is when you add water that their uniqueness appears. When learning how to use watercolour pencils, we will be experimenting with lots of different techniques on scrap paper and when confident we will be using them on the finished sketches.Before we start the projects, we will learn basic skills and techniques of sketching, like crosshatching, brushing out colour, brushstrokes, blotting, wet on dry, dry on wet, dry on dry, grading colour and learning how to achieve light and shade. We will also cover the rules of perspective, composition and texture that will help us in finalising our watercolour pieces.Watercolours have a translucent, light quality and are great to experiment with brushstrokes and detail. We will learn how to hold a brush and experiment with top techniques like highlights using tissue paper, wet-in-wet, achieving a gradient effect, using a dry brush and building up on light and shade, hatching, crosshatching and solid shading.We will aim to have finished pieces of still life, landscapes, city scenes, portraits of animals and people, and any ideas of abstract art will be welcomed to explore. Most of all we will try to have fun by exploring different watercolour techniques. For part #1 of this course you will need watercolour pencils, a set of brushes suitable for watercolour, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, good quality paper and a jar for water. For part #2 of this course you will need watercolour paints, brushes suitable for watercoulours, a pencil, a palette and a pad of good quality watercolour paper. It would also be useful to have a board or easel, and a putty eraser but these are not essential. Paints are available in pans and tubes. Tubes can be useful when painting large areas, whereas pans are smaller and easier to transport. We have a small amount of materials available to use but to get the best from this course you will need your own equipment. These can be purchased from professional art shops and WHSmith, but also please look at more affordable ones in The Works, QD, Poundland and online stores as these items can be purchased for a nominal sum and are perfect quality for anyone who wants to try painting without spending a lot of money. *Please note, the course won't run in the half term, or the week after. It will resume as normal after these dates. This is a 10 week course (3 parts in 1), where we will be exploring and experimenting sketching and drawing with pencils, charcoal and ink pens, and painting with acrylics, watercolour or oils, the choice is yours! Part 1 - We will learn how to create a realistic-looking texture using a selection of pencils, charcoal sticks, watercolour pencils and fine line pens. We will practice shading by using strokes, feathering, crosshatching, fading shading, learning about form, light, shapes, composition, depth and perspective. We will achieve these by drawing simple 3-D shapes, a still-life, landscape and townscape/cityscape. Please bring a selection of pencils, watercolour pencils, charcoal sticks and fine line pens, along with some good quality paper and a sketch book. Part 2 - During the second part of the course you will have an opportunity to explore and learn how to paint with acrylics or watercolour (oils optional). We will be painting a still-life or you might want to have an attempt to paint your pet or favourite animal. If you decide to do so, please bring a good quality photograph of your pet. Part 3 - During the third part of the course, we will be taking a structured approach to drawing and painting the human face. Faces are one of the most engaging subjects to draw and paint. We will be exploring shapes and the character of the human face, the proportional differences and the individual unique expression of personality. You will have the choice of doing a full-face portrait, a three-quarter view and a profile. You might like to attempt a self portrait or perhaps do a portrait of a friend or relative, if so please bring a good quality photo with you. If you have already done some portraits you might want to attempt drawing and painting the human figure end explore movement as well. Who is this course suitable for? This course is suitable for both beginners and students who have already attended our previous courses and workshops. If you are new to this there is no need to worry, you will be under the professional supervision of our art tutor Marina. Together we will learn, experiment, be creative and have fun. For beginners you will be introduced to sewing and given all the information you will need to know to begin your new creative hobby. This course will provide you with the skills and confidence to make your own clothes from a commercial pattern. What will I learn? You will be taken through the whole process of making a garment, including adapting patterns to suit your body shape, sewing darts and pleats, inserting zips and lots more in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Who is the course for? For beginners you will be introduced to sewing and given all the information you will need to know to begin your new creative hobby. You will learn about tools and fabrics, how to read and use a paper pattern and how to source the right fabrics. Before you know it you will be proudly wearing something that you made and you will have professional guidance every step of the way. Will I have to provide anything? You will need to bring a pattern, fabric and some tools; scissors, thread, needles. There are lots of good fabric and pattern providers online. We have just taken delivery of 8 brand new sewing machines, so no need to bring your own (unless you want to). Am I ready to start? As soon as you have chosen your pattern and fabric you are ready. If you need further advice before the start of the course please make contact with the college. Tuesday 15th, 22nd and 29th July - from 1.30pm - 4.30pm Art is a great activity to encourage mindfulness, relaxation and of course creativity. Get Creative at the Haverhill Learning Centre This is a fun and interactive workshop for anyone who is a fan of Chinese Art and / or likes to explore painting with ink or watercolour paints. There are two styles of Chinese painting: xieyi style and gongbi style. Xieyi or freehand is marked by exaggerated forms and freehand brushwork. Gongbi or meticulous is characterized by close attention to detail and fine brushwork. Subjects and themes in traditional Chinese paintings are the figurative painting, landscapes and painting flowers and birds. What materials do l need ? Traditional rise paper is the perfect choice (good quality watercolour paper is a great alternative), bamboo or wooden Chinese brushes (or similar to these), ink, watercolour paints, a few empty jars for water and some kitchen paper. We will be painting at desks but if you have a tabletop or free-standing easel you are welcome to bring these along. I don't have any experience with painting, is this workshop right for me ? This short course is suitable for all levels of experience, from complete beginners to people looking to try a new style. Our art tutor Marina will explain, demonstrate and guide you through every step of the course. Where do I source my art materials ? Sets of watercolour paints, watercolour paper and sketchbooks can be found in The Works, Poundland, the local supermarkets, and of course from online retailers. During this fun and interactive 3 week watercolour course we will learn to draw and paint like the beloved children's book author and artist Beatrix Potter, who found her inspiration in nature and her surroundings. Potter had a keen eye for observation, and with using her imagination, she produced many stories and illustrations of rabbits, mice, pigs, ducks and frogs dressed in human clothing. Her sketchbook was full of drawings of flowers, leaves, insects and animals. She did studies of trees, interiors, household places, buildings and landscapes. Potter once wrote "Nature, with the exception of water and air, is made of colour." We will attempt to complete a colourful watercolour piece inspired by the work of Beatrix Potter, starting with sketching on a watercolour paper and we will be exploring the watercolour painting techniques that she used in her paintings. We will not be able to use the same materials that Beatrix Potter used because they are no longer produced. However we will use the materials that will resamble that ones she used during her lifetime. Who is this course suitable for? This course is suitable for both beginners and students who have already attended our previous art courses. Our professional art tutor Marina will explain, demonstrate and guide you through every step of the way. What will I need? You will need a very good quality A4 watercolour paper (Windsor and Newton or Daler Rowney), HB sketching Pencil, a putty eraser, black and brown watercolour india ink, calligraphy painting dip pen and nibs (or black and brown waterproof drawing and fine line pens as an alternative), Windsor and Newton Professional watercolours in tubes or pans (this can be either a complete set of paints, or at least the most essential colours: permanent carmine, new gamboge, sap green, antwep blue and burnt sienna), brushes suitable for watercolour, size 0, 2 and 4, three jars for water and some tissue paper. You will be able to purchase your materials from WHSmith, The Range or online stores.
