Join us at the Old Pinjarra Court House to explore the dancefloor murder that shocked Australia with historian, academic and author Leigh Straw. ~ The Ballroom Murder In August 1925, Audrey Jacob shot dead her former fiancé, Cyril Gidley, in full view of hundreds of guests at a charity ball in Perth’s Government House. When she was arrested, she still held the gun in her hand. It was a open and shut case of wilful murder – that is until Jacob assigned prosecutor Arthur Haynes to her defence. His ability to play the press and the jury for sympathy would lead to a sensational result. The Ballroom Murder is a true crime story that is rich with first-hand newspaper accounts from the day, and demonstrates the power of the press and privilege in an extraordinary judicial outcome. ~ Meet the Author Leigh Straw is an academic, historian and writer. She is the author of true crime biographies of Australian crime figures Kate Leigh and Dulcie Markham, and Australia’s first female detective, Lillian Armfield. Leigh was the joint winner of the 2018 Margaret Medcalf Award for her book After the War: Returned Soldiers and the Mental and Physical Scars of World War I. ~ Morning tea provided, register today to secure your spot! Dr. Emily is a regular monthly guest on the popular podcast The Imperfects, where her top-rated episodes, branded as 'Emisodes,' cover topics such as defining personal values, self-compassion, accepting uncomfortable feelings, establishing boundaries, and living joyfully in the moment. About the Book Dr Emily Musgrove, resident psychologist on the popular podcast The Imperfects, shares the key psychological processes and practical skills we need to know for transformative and lasting change. ‘Being stuck’ can look and feel different to different people: trapped, powerless, hopeless, frozen, frustrated, numb, disconnected, anxious, overwhelmed. Getting stuck is part of being human. But staying stuck for too long robs us of our vitality. It costs us healthy relationships, meaningful pursuits and, most importantly, the life we want to live. But even in our lowest moments, one yearning shines through: The desire for a better way. The desire to become unstuck. With her signature clarity and compassion, Dr Emily offers this practical guide to finding your way forward by focusing on key areas: · Living by your values: defining what matters to you and what it means to flourish · Overcoming stress: understanding its impact on the body and the tools you need to work effectively with it · Befriending the Inner Critic: learning a better way of thinking · Working with painful emotions: discovering acceptance and self-compassion · Taking Action: finding the power of choice and committing to new and helpful habits and behaviours. Change can seem impossibly hard, but staying stuck is harder. Unstuck gives you the tools to cultivate a life without limits, in times of pain, in times of change, in times of joy.
