An Enemy of the People by Ibsen- A performance for The Ver Valley Society | Abbey Theatre
May 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Holywell
A version by Rebecca Lenkiawicz from a literal translation by Charlotte Barslund. A COMPANY OF TEN production In this contemporary take on Ibsen’s play, Dr Teresa Stockmann, a passionate and dedicated medical officer, discovers that the town’s famed spa water is contaminated. Initially celebrated for revealing the truth to the community, Teresa soon faces fierce opposition from her brother, the mayor and other influential townsfolk who put money ahead of public health. It’s an emotive topic and apparently some swearing should be expected. This is the big one! There will be a special performance of this topical play with receipts going to support the Society’s River Ver water testing programme (each accredited laboratory test costs us almost £200). Please come along and bring your friends. It’ll be a great VVS social occasion. The bar will be open during the interval and afterwards until 11pm.

Author Talk: Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal by Robin Ince | 1 Holywell Hill
Jun 23, 2025 (UTC+0)
Holywell
We are delighted to be hosting award winning broadcaster, comedian and author Robin Ince in-store for a discussion about his latest book, Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal: My Adventures in Neurodiversity. Robin Ince is a comedian, actor and writer. With Professor Brian Cox, he created and presents the award-winning BBC Radio 4 show The Infinite Monkey Cage, which ranks among the most popular science podcasts worldwide. What if being a bit weird is actually entirely normal? What if sharing our internal struggles wasn’t a sign of weakness, but strength? For over thirty years, award-winning broadcaster and comedian Robin Ince has entertained thousands in person and on air. But underneath the surface, a whirlwind was at play — a struggle with sadness, concentration, self-doubt and near-constant anxiety. After his ADHD diagnosis at the age of fifty-two, it all started to make sense.
In Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal, Robin uses his own experiences to explore the fascinating world of neurodivergence and to ask what normal really is – and whether it even exists. Packed with personal insights, intimate anecdotes and interviews with therapists, neuroscientists and celebrities, this is a quirky and witty dive into the world of neuroscience and human behaviour.
A powerful, personal exploration of anxiety, ADHD and self-acceptance, Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal reminds us all - no matter how weird we feel - that it’s okay to be a little different. Following the dicussion, there will be time for an audience Q+A, as well as a book signing with Robin. Please note this event is 18+. Tea and coffee will be provided. Feel free to bring your own tipple.

Poetry Afternoons with lecturer Michael King: W. H. Auden | 1 Holywell Hill
Oct 2, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Holywell
We are delighted to announce our next Poetry Lecture Workshop will explore Selected Poems by W. H. Auden, revised and edited by Edward Mendleson. Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the session. About the book~ Edward Mendelson has significantly expanded his authoritative, chronological ordered edition of Auden's Selected Poems (first published in 1979), adding twenty items to the hundred in the original edition, and broadening the focus to reflect the wealth of forms, the rhetorical and tonal range, and the variousness of content in Auden's poetry, in the confines of one volume. In particular, there are newly included examples of Auden's mastery of light verse: the self-descriptive sequence of haiku called 'Profiles', the barbed wartime quatrains of 'Leap Before You Look', or 'Funeral Blues' itself. Also included are brief notes explaining references that may have become obscure, and a revised introduction drawing on recent additions to Auden scholarship.

Alexander Marr - Art & Wit in the Renaissance | McGregor Matthews Room, New College
Nov 4, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Holywell
From the satirical barbs of Erasmus’s In Praise of Folly (1511) to the urbane games of Castiglione’s Il libro del cortegiano (1528), wit was a serious subject in the Renaissance, addressed in natural philosophy and medicine as the intellective part of the human soul, in artistic theory as the wellspring of creativity, and in criticism as one of the most important markers of authorial voice. Yet wit’s visual fortunes in the period have barely been explored. Visual wit was a kind of pictorial ingenuity, through which artists sought to rebut the humanist claim that by imitating nature they were merely replicators, not inventors. Hans Holbein the Younger, in particular, engaged in a kind of guerilla warfare with the humanists he knew and portrayed, including Erasmus and Sir Thomas More, appropriating their ingenious techniques of ambiguity, self-contradiction, and disguise in a playful contest between painting and poetry. This series of lectures will trace visual wit in Holbein’s hands, as he evoked breath, voice, and brain through cunning conceits such as More’s ambivalent half-smile and Erasmus’s keen nose. In so doing, we will touch on some major themes in sixteenth-century culture: the complex nature of ‘character’; disputes over biological and artistic parentage; the paradox of lively death; and the vexed relationship between the thinking mind and skilled hand. Dr Alexander Marr FSA is Professor of Renaissance and Early Modern Art at the University of Cambridge, a Fellow of Trinity Hall, and President of Leonardo da Vinci Society. His most recent book is Rubens's Spirit: From Ingenuity to Genius, (2021).

January Classics Book Club: Persuasion by Jane Austen | 1 Holywell Hill
Jan 30, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Holywell
Classics can be intimidating. They have a reputation of being too highbrow and incomprehensible for us mere mortals. We at Books on the Hill, however, think that is just not true. Classics speak of a universal theme we all have first hand experience of: love, loss, friendship, hope. They are for all of us. To tackle this, we are starting a new Book Club focusing on The Classics from recent and not so recent history. For January, to lift your spirits, we have chosen to explore Persuasion by Jane Austen. This Book Club will be held on the last Thursday of the month, and is suitable for ages 18+. Tea and coffee will be provided, as well as glasses should you chose to bring your own tipple. About the book - At twenty-seven, Anne Elliot is no longer young and has few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she had been persuaded by her friend Lady Russell to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a handsome naval captain with neither fortune nor rank.
What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen's last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, Persuasion is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, but, above all,it is a love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.

March Text Book Club: Visitation by Jenny Erpenbeck | 1 Holywell Hill
Mar 16, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Holywell
For March, our booksellers were set the task of choosing a book along the theme of political expression. After considering a wide range of fantastic titles, we have decided on Visitation, the latest translation from Jenny Erpenbeck. The book club will be held upstairs in our reading rooms and are suitable for ages 18+ years. About the book: By the side of a lake in Brandenburg, a young architect builds the house of his dreams - a summerhouse with wrought-iron balconies, stained-glass windows the colour of jewels, and a bedroom with a hidden closet, all set within a beautiful garden. But the land on which he builds has a dark history of violence that began with the drowning of a young woman in the grip of madness and that grows darker still over the course of the century: the Jewish neighbours disappear one by one; the Red Army requisitions the house, burning the furniture and trampling the garden; a young East German attempts to swim his way to freedom in the West; a couple return from brutal exile in Siberia and leave the house to their granddaughter, who is forced to relinquish her claim upon it and sell to new owners intent upon demolition. Reaching far into the past, and recovering what was lost and what was buried, Jenny Erpenbeck tells a story both beautiful and brutal, about the things that haunt a home.
