Letters to Sala is an extraordinary adaptation of Ann Kirschner's book, Sala's Gift, which is based on a true story. This gripping tale follows the incredible journey of a young girl, Sala Garncarz Kirschner, as she navigates the hardships of wartime Germany. Sala's resilience is truly remarkable, surviving five years in seven Nazi labor camps. What makes her story even more astonishing is the discovery of over 350 hidden letters that Sala meticulously kept hidden for over fifty years, stored safely in a Spill and Spell box.
The narrative takes a compelling turn when Sala finally reveals the cache of letters to her daughter, Ann. The impact of this revelation is profound, leading both Ann and Sala on emotional journeys that they never anticipated. Through meticulous research, Ann uncovers the historical significance of her mother's documentation of the Holocaust, realizing the immense importance of these letters. As Ann grapples with her own reactions to her mother's story, her daughters, Caroline and Elisabeth, begin to understand the weight of their Jewish heritage for the first time.
Playwright Arlene Hutton skillfully weaves these two narratives together, posing a significant question: what should be done with these letters? Are they merely precious relics from Sala's past, or are they invaluable historical documents that must be shared with the world? As three generations of Kirschner women collaborate to unravel the past and confront the true gravity of Sala's letters, the depth of their journey becomes increasingly apparent.
