Different Johns - Celebrating the life and legacy of John Cohen is a feature-length documentary created by Robert Carr. This captivating film delves into the multifaceted life of John Cohen, an extraordinary individual who excelled as a musician, photographer, filmmaker, and anthropologist. Hosted by Tompkins Corners Cultural Center (TCCC) in Putnam Valley, this event promises to be a remarkable tribute to one of TCCC's founding members.
Immerse yourself in a visual and auditory feast as Different Johns showcases breathtaking images and haunting melodies. More importantly, it unravels the essence of what made John Cohen truly unique. As acclaimed documentary filmmaker Mick Gold remarked, "I'm exhilarated." Explore John's journey during the vibrant era of Greenwich Village, where he mingled with luminaries like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Robert Frank. His close friendship with Woody Guthrie and his encounter with a young Bob Dylan were captured through his lens.
John's passion for authentic American folk music manifested in his documentaries, shedding light on the Appalachian Mountains' poverty-stricken inhabitants who inspired the music's soul. His empathy extended to documenting indigenous Andean communities, a lifelong commitment he embarked on after studying Peruvian weaving customs for his master's thesis in 1956.
Joining forces with The New Lost City Ramblers, John toured the country, leaving an indelible mark on the folk music scene. As a mentor and bandmate of the Down Hill Strugglers, he graced prestigious venues like the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, and the Newport Folk Festival.
