Lower Derby
Cultural Experiences
Due to popular demand, there is another opportunity for you to join the fascinating tour of Friar Gate, Derby on Sunday 14th September at 2pm. During the late 17th century Friar Gate in Derby began to develop westward from the site of a former Dominican friary to the urbane and ordered Georgian setting near Ashbourne Road, which is still a significant historic part of the city today. The tour will outline the stages of this development through the 18th and 19th centuries, whilst also highlighting some of the residual architectural features that remain from each stage of its development. The main part of the tour will focus on the changes following the Act of 1768, which released land for large scale speculative development to builders such as Joseph Pickford. The tour will end with a review of two significant architectural works by the early 19th century architect, Francis Goodwin. The tour will be conducted by Mark Somerfield (former Trustee of the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust), and will begin at St Werburgh's church (2pm) and will end at the top of Vernon Street around 4pm. Parking and Meeting Place: Please meet at the church by 1:55pm. There are several carparks nearby including Parksafe at Bold Lane. The tour covers the length of Friar Gate, sturdy shoes and weather appropriate clothing required. Information Source: Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust | eventbrite

Theresa Malenfant and Scott Medford ECMA winner Theresa Malenfant and renowned guitarist Scott Medford have become one of the most popular blues duo acts in the Atlantic Provinces. They have been performing together in a band for years, but decided to work as a duo seven years ago. In that short time they managed to win second place in an International Blues Challenge (IBC) held in Memphis Tennessee. Theresa and Scott have an intuitive way of working with each other, and the mutual respect and admiration for the other’s abilities is evident from their stage performance. Theresa Malenfant has earned the nickname “Queen Bee of the Blues”. When you hear the first note you’ll know why. And she personally selected Scott Medford to be her guitarist. That speaks volumes about his level of playing. An incredible evening of music you’ll not soon forget! Information Source: Grimross Brewing Co. | eventbrite

Cultural Experiences
Welcome to the Cultural Humility Two Day Workshop happening at Saint Mary's Maqiyahtimok Centre on September 16, 2025 at 9:00 AM (Atlantic Time)! Join us for an enriching experience where we'll explore the importance of cultural humility in our interactions and relationships. Learn how to embrace diversity, foster inclusivity, and build meaningful connections with others. Cultural humility looks inward. This workshop offers a space for reflection, dialogue, and growth. Come ready to engage, listen, and learn from one another. Don't miss out on this opportunity to grow personally and professionally. See you there! This workshop is based upon the concept of cultural humility and its principles developed by Dr. Melanie Tervalon and Dr. Jann Murray-Garcia. Day one focuses on providing essential concepts and practices that encourage a safe respectful space. Day two will focus upon understanding and practicing the principles of cultural humility through small groups with dialogue. Dr. Jann Murray-García has led community-based education and cultural understanding at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing since its launch in 2010 and asserts that individuals and institutions must look for their hidden scripts. That those scripts are the cultural identities, family experiences, traumas, intersecting histories, and languages that shape interactions, inform values and influence policies. She professes that scripts can be interrupted by using cultural humility. This workshop will share literature, videos, experiences, as well as engage in dialogue, self-reflection and experiential learning to foster knowledge and insight towards: · How communication styles matter. · How implicit bias and hidden scripts impact service delivery and work environments. · How the practice of cultural humility can cultivate cultural safety. · How cultural humility encourages awareness of power dynamics. · How cultural humility encourages respect towards culture, identity, and a person's needs and rights. · The difference between cultural humility and cultural competency. · The connection between cultural humility and a safe and healthy work culture. · The importance of community and institutional accountability towards Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity, and Belonging Initiatives. Dear Muffin Makers, We’re entering another season of “Muffin Mania” in support of those who go out in the evenings to make contact with and show love to Fredericton’s homeless population. Each Sunday night, BSBC is responsible for this important ministry. We need 4 dozen muffins for each week’s ministry. Here are the details: we’d like to avoid an over-stocking of the freezer by having just 4 dozen muffins delivered to the standing freezer in the main kitchen by SUNDAY of each week we’d ask that ‘muffin makers’ wrap each muffin individually in clingwrap or placed it in a baggie before bringing them to the church (it’s so much easier to access the frozen muffins and more sanitary to serve them when individually wrapped) please put (1) your name, (2) the date and (3) STREET MINISTRY on the bag in which you put the wrapped muffins to bring them to the freezer The love and engagement of our bakers has been a marvellous blessing to those engaged in street ministry, to us and to those who receive the ‘fruit of your labor’. Thank you for considering your participation. Your Social Action Team Information Source: Brunswick Street Baptist Church | eventbrite

Fredericton
Cultural Experiences
BirthStories is an invitation to gather in a warm and supportive circle to revisit and reflect on our experiences of birth. Birthing a baby is a life-changing event, and the process itself can be dramatic, intense, wonderful and terrible, all at the same time. Our state of mind during labour and birth is different from our usual waking consciousness, and that influences how we remember the event. Memories of birth can be fragmented and disjointed, and we may have unanswered questions about our experiences. We may find this uncomfortable or disturbing, and wonder if it is normal. Remembering the pathway through birth helps us to make sense of our experience. In the BirthStories workshop, we will use mindfulness, art, and music to help memories to emerge and integrate, to put the pieces together in a meaningful way. Your fee will cover the cost of supplies and support The Iris Center’s programs. If the amount is a hardship, please ask about support. Sports & Fitness Rugby
The fascinating life and career of England's most capped player of all time, Leicester Tigers' legendary scrum half Ben Youngs. DESCRIPTION World Cups. Lions Tours. Playing alongside and under some of the biggest names in rugby, including his own brother. Ben Youngs has done it all and seen it all, so is in a unique position to tell the definitive story of the past fifteen years of English rugby through his own journey. His autobiography will be bursting with stories from his England and Leicester days, such as that remarkable eighteen-match unbeaten streak under Eddie Jones, when Ben was the first choice number 9. But this book is so much more than just another rugby story. It will capture Ben’s warm and engaging character, but it will also reveal in stark honesty the dark times he went through, particularly when his family was ripped apart by the deaths of both his sister-in-law and his brother-in-law. For the first time, Ben will talk candidly about how he overcame those difficulties with the help of the national team’s psychologist. Ben has always been a fan favourite, but that status has been further cemented through his podcast, For the Love of Rugby, which is proving to be hugely popular among rugby devotees. At the heart of this story lies an unbreakable brotherly bond. No other player has a tale like it. Information Source: Linghams Bookshop | eventbrite

T he Stolen Crown: Treachery, Deceit and the Death of the Tudor Dynasty In March 1603, Queen Elizabeth I, the last Tudor monarch, lay dying at Richmond Palace. The queen's ministers clustered round her bedside, urging her to name her successor - something she had stubbornly resisted throughout her reign. Almost with her last breath, she whispered that James VI of Scotland should succeed her. She died shortly afterwards and the throne of England passed peacefully from Tudor to Stuart. Or so we've been led to believe. In this illustrated talk based on her new book, bestselling author, historian and broadcaster Tracy Borman will reveal the shocking truth behind one of history’s best-kept secrets. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view rarely-seen items from the Alnwick Castle archive relevant to the subject of the talk.
