Liquid Identities Festival – Celebrating Scotland-Based ESEA Talents | Assembly Roxy

Liquid Identities Festival – Celebrating Scotland-Based ESEA Talents | Assembly Roxy

Sep 28, 2025 (UTC+1)
Edinburgh
Arts
Join us at Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh , on 28 September 2025 for Liquid Identities , the first-of-its-kind festival in Scotland celebrating the fluid, evolving nature of East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) identities. Coinciding with UK ESEA Heritage Month , this festival highlights the richness, diversity, and creativity of Scotland-based ESEA artists across all disciplines. Like liquid, our identities are constantly in motion — flowing, adapting, and reshaping themselves as we move through different spaces and experiences. This festival celebrates the beautiful complexity of being ESEA : code-switching between languages and cultures, navigating multiple senses of belonging, and creating new forms of identity that don’t fit traditional categories. Whether you’re part of the ESEA community, an ally, or simply interested in learning more about ESEA cultures — this festival is for you. In August 2025, we launched a callout for creative submissions, and the festival will feature the incredible work of Scotland-based ESEA artists selected through this process. The full line-up of artists and performances will be announced closer to the festival date . Event Details: Date: 28 September 2025 Venue: Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh Time: 13:00 PM – Late Supported by: Big Lottery Community Fund ( We Are Here For You project), in partnership with Mongol Identity, besea.n Peiwen Legacy Fund, Wu Asia Pacific, Tattu, EHFM, We Are Here Scotland, and Edinburgh Council’s Local Open Event Fund. About ESEA Creatives ESEA Creatives is a Scotland-based, community-led network supporting East and South East Asian artists, creatives, and cultural workers. We exist to nurture belonging, amplify underrepresented voices, and celebrate the richness and diversity of ESEA creative expression . Whether you are a first-generation immigrant, Scottish-born artist, cultural producer, or ally, ESEA Creatives brings together individuals across disciplines, generations, and diasporas to connect, collaborate, and celebrate creativity Information Source: ESEA Creatives | eventbrite

He will trace his extraordinary journey to uncover his lineage—a story that intertwines enslaved Africans in Guyana with slaveholding dynasties in Scotland, England, and the Netherlands. Through vivid storytelling, he reveals how the transatlantic slave trade shaped economies, cities like Liverpool and Glasgow, and even modern financial institutions, while exposing enduring legacies of trauma and privilege across generations. Announced as the winner of the University of Cambridge’s Vice-Chancellor’s Global Impact Award, Malik’s work challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths about sugar’s bitter origins and the systemic exploitation that fuelled it. Discover how his personal quest illuminates Scotland’s overlooked role in slavery, the paradox of his dual heritage, and the urgent need for reconciliation with this buried past. This event is part of the National Library of Scotland’s Black History Month programme. About the speaker Malik Al Nasir is a British author and performance poet. He is the leader of the band Malik & the O.G's. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge.
