Arts Fine Art
Experience the captivating preview of Martin Boyce's new exhibition, "Before Behind Between Above Below," at the renowned Fruitmarket in Edinburgh. Boyce, one of the UK's most significant artists, skillfully transforms the textures and forms of the built environment through his sculptures. By incorporating the iconography of everyday objects and drawing inspiration from the histories of art, architecture, and design, Boyce creates poetic landscapes that seamlessly merge interior and exterior spaces. This thought-provoking exhibition takes place throughout Fruitmarket, spanning both the Exhibition Galleries and the Warehouse. The showcase begins with an installation that ingeniously utilizes the existing architecture, forming a new structure to showcase a series of wall-based works. From early graphic text pieces to more recent painted panels, these artworks offer a glimpse into Boyce's artistic evolution. Continuing the journey, the exhibition features a specially adapted concrete table displaying models and materials related to Boyce's history with Jan and Joël Martel's 1925 concrete 'trees.' For the first time, Boyce's lexicon of shapes, patterns, and typography derived from these trees is presented in an exhibition. As visitors explore further, they will encounter an atmospheric combination of works in Fruitmarket's Upper Gallery, seamlessly merging the familiar with the new. From the immersive beauty of "Future Blossom (For Yokeno Residence)" to the subtly subversive interventions of the Ventilation Grill series, these pieces transport viewers to a magical realm between interior and exterior spaces. The final stop of the exhibition is the Warehouse, where sculptures are gathered as if they have just returned from or are about to embark on a new exhibition. Boyce artfully challenges ideas of storage, allowing us a glimpse into the normally unseen aspects of the exhibition and art-making process. This provokes contemplation on how thoughts and memories slip in and out of our minds. Do not miss this remarkable exhibition, bringing together Boyce's works from 1992 to the present, including numerous sculptures that have been shown internationally but never before in his home country. It is an opportunity to reflect on the artistic sensibility and sculptural language of one of the UK's most prominent artists. Admission is free, so mark your calendars for the Exhibition Preview: Martin Boyce at Fruitmarket on March 1, 2024.
