Intro to Linoleum Relief Printing | Visual Philosophy
Arts
Join artist Roger Ourthiague for an immersive and comprehensive workshop on the fascinating art of linoleum relief printing. Whether you're an aspiring artist or an experienced printmaker, this course is designed to cater to all levels of expertise. This versatile technique serves as a perfect introduction to the world of printmaking, allowing for a smooth transition from basic to complex designs.
Throughout the workshop, participants will gain valuable insights into the material of linoleum and the process of printing a block using an etching press. The day starts with a focus on imagery, where attendees will learn to transfer their ideas onto their blocks. To make the most of the class time, it is recommended to bring along some inspiring imagery or reference drawings.
The majority of the workshop is dedicated to the intricate art of carving and mark making using traditional Mikisyo tools. Once the linoleum carving is complete, participants will be guided through the printing process. Detailed instructions will be provided on using oil-based ink to achieve a rich and clean image, as well as how to register a block for consistent printing.
At Visual Philosophy, we understand the importance of a well-equipped studio. That's why we provide each student with a 6" x 8" linoleum block, Sumi printing paper, and oil-based ink as part of the materials fee. In addition, carving tools and other necessary materials will be provided to ensure successful printing.
