WHO & WHAT: Join Rep Club for a discussion on Black Genius with author Tre Johnson & V an Lathan WHEN: Doors at 6:30pm, event promptly at 7pm. WHERE: Reparations Club, 3054 S. Please email us at questions@reparations.club if you have any additional needs, questions, or accessibility concerns. About the Book: A POWERFUL READ REDEFINING THE MEANING OF GENIUS WHILE ILLUMINATING THE WAYS IN WHICH BLACK AMERICANS HAVE FOUND VARIOUS WAYS TO THRIVE DESPITE INSURMOUNTABLE OBSTACLES. Black genius sits at the heart of the American story. In his probing essay collection, Black Genius , cultural critic Tre Johnson examines how Black American culture has, against all odds, been the lifeblood of American ingenuity. At times using his own personal and professional stories, Johnson surveys Black cities, communities, and schools with an ever-watchful eye of what transpires around Black mobility. With a passion for complex storytelling and pulling from both pop culture and American history, Johnson weaves past and present making his case for the genius of innovation. As he examined his findings, Johnson couldn’t help but wonder about the brilliance of the every day. Specifically, the creativity of the 90’s graffiti-style airbrush tee, his aunties packed weekend bus trips to Atlantic city, and the razor-tongued, socially-sharp, profanity-laced monologues of comedian Dick Gregory. Again and again, he asks us to ponder—are these not obvious examples of genius? Chatty yet profound, Black Genius subverts expectations from the very first page with a blend of reportage, historical data, and pop culture as Johnson dives into his own family history seeking big answers to complex questions. Johnson’s signature wit and curiosity turns history into an amusing sequence of events. TRE JOHNSON was born in Trenton, NJ, and now finds himself in Philadelphia, where he writes with a focus on race, culture, and politics. His work has appeared in The Washington Post , Rolling Stone , Vox , The New York Times , Slate , Vanity Fair , The Grio , and other outlets. He has appeared to provide media commentary on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon ; CBS Morning Show ; PBS NewsHour , NPR’s Morning Edition , and other programs. In addition to writing, Tre is a career educator, working both inside and outside the classroom as a teacher and leader. VAN LATHAN JR. is the cohost of the Ringer’s Higher Learning podcast and is best known as a former cohost and senior producer on TMZ Live. He is the Executive Producer for Two Distant Strangers , the 2021 Academy Award Winner for Best Live Action Short Film. He lives in Los Angeles. As part of their August series “SEE•SOUND,” 7th House is proud to present MONK and MONK IN EUROPE (1968), a rare two-part screening of Michael and Christian Blackwood's exceptional 1968 verité documentaries which display the unparalleled genius of the legendary jazz composer and pianist Thelonious Monk ! Remarkable as both records of musical history and gems of late 60s documentary filmmaking, the Blackwoods' pair of films are stunning fly-on-the-wall portraits of Monk and his band — including jazz greats Charlie Rouse, Clark Terry, Larry Gales, Johnny Griffin and more. Filmed (in gorgeously saturated black and white) over the course of 1968, the Blackwood brothers were given the opportunity to spend time with jazz virtuoso, following him in New York, where they captured his quartet's performance at the Village Vanguard and recording sessions for Columbia Records, and Atlanta, where they appeared at a festival organized by legendary jazz impresario (and Newport Jazz Festival founder) George Wein . The Blackwoods then followed Monk and his musicians on a European tour as they traveled through England, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. The filmmakers then dove through a years' worth of footage and surfaced with these two one-hour films which brim with captivating performance footage and fascinating candid moments, offering a rare glimpse into Monk's genius as a composer, performer, and band leader. Footage from the Blackwoods' films would later make up the bulk of Charlotte Zwerin's fantastic (and better known)1988 film Thelonious Monk: Staight, No Chaser , but this very special evening offers a rare opportunity to go back to the source and see the Blackwoods' original films on the big screen. Whether you are a documentary lover, jazz afficionado, or admirer of adventurous artists who pushed the boundaries of music — this is a very special evening not to be missed! MONK, dirs. Writers Bloc presents Illinois Governor JB Pritzker in conversation with Billy Ray In a time when Democratic voices are muted at best, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has made it his mission to fiercely defend democratic ideals. In an era of extreme partisan politics, Governor Pritzker dishes out hard truths to both Democrats and Republicans alike, using his position to speak out for health care accessibility, reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ protection, education, gun violence prevention, and economic development. He was the first governor in the country to sign legislation banning book banning in Illinois, making it illegal for libraries to restrict access to books based on partisan disapproval. While championing socially progressive issues, he has made Illinois one of the most favorable places in the country for business. Billy Ray is an award-winning screenwriter for both television and film. Among his credits are The Hunger Games, The Last Tycoon, Captain Phillips, The Comey Rule, and Shattered Glass . He is among the most respected and successful writers in Hollywood. He is the author of a forthcoming novel called Burn the Water. No bags of any kind will be allowed into the event, with the exception of clear bags no larger than 12" x 12" x 16". A valid ID is required to attend. Accepted forms of identification include state-issued ID or Driver’s License, valid non-expired US Government or Military ID, or an official passport. PRS Esoteric Game Night! Come one, come all! Test your luck at esoteric & historic, family-friendly games of chance & skill! On the third evening of the third week of every moon (third Wednesday of the month) PRS will be shuffling tarot cards & rolling many-sided dice at our new monthly gathering in the bookstore, PRS Esoteric Game Night! Each month we will be featuring (& playing) a family-friendly card, board or parlour game of esoteric & historic note. JULY'S GAME Rebirth: The Tibetan Game of Liberation From Vajra to Nirvana, the many paths within the Tibetan Buddhist cosmology of life, death & reincarnation are the chutes & ladders of this long-standing favorite of Tibetan children & monks alike. Created in the early 13th century by renowned Sanskrit scholar Kunga Gyaltsen ("Whose Banner Is Total Joy") to entertain his dying mother, the game is played with a masterpiece of a board painted by Pema Dorje & one, single die... which will reveal the karmic destiny of the players. HOW TO PLAY All players begin in the human realm (24. The Heavenly Highway) & the roll of the die (often but not always) is the opposite of the typical use of dice. Meaning, rather like the workings of karma, the lower you roll, the higher you go. For example, from the starting square (24), a roll of 1 will advance you 3 spaces to 27, Heaven of the Four Great Kings. Conversely, casting a 6 will send you all the way down to square 6, Reviving Hell. Be careful, you can get trapped in the deepest Hell & have to roll your way out. Also be advised, the higher you ascend the more only throwing 1s & 2s will allow you to advance further. You can be born again in the Realm of Animals or arrive at the Land of Bliss. You can get stuck in Cessation or surrounded by a bunch of Disciples. It is all a matter of the turning of the wheel of karma & the fall of the die. The first player to attain Nirvana passes their relics into the stupa above & becomes an object of reverence for the rest of the age, pervading the universe with their emanations. So that's a win. Other games will also be available to play such as the Tarot of Loka, Malcontent, Cat's Cradle & more. And yes, of course, you are always welcome to bring your own games to share. Make new friends & cease your wanderings of sams ā ra ! Tickets: $10 Suggested Donation or RSVP and donate at the door! Please email events@prs.org or phone 323-663-2167 with any questions. As part of their August series “SEE•SOUND,” 7th House is proud to present the brand new documentary on one of music's brightest and, tragically, briefest flames — the incredible Jeff Buckley . IT’S NEVER OVER: JEFF BUCKLEY (2025), directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg ( DELIVER US FROM EVIL, JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE, WEST OF MEMPHIS ), covers the life of the rising young star with an otherworldly voice and boundary-pushing artistry, who left the '90s music world reeling when he died suddenly, at age 30, after the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Grace . Told through never-before-seen footage from Buckley’s archives and intimate accounts from his mother Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, Jeff’s former bandmates, including Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, and luminaries like Ben Harper and Aimee Mann, IT’S NEVER OVER, JEFF BUCKLEY illuminates one of modern music’s most influential and enigmatic figures. Join us for this evening of tribute to an artist who was — even in his brief time — one of the the most electrifying and mesmerizing talents of the late 20th Century. Dir. Amy Berg, 2025, 106 mins, United States, English, Color, Unrated, Digital. Special thanks to Magnolia Pictures.
