Discover the captivating story of the Chauvet Cave, where the oldest rock paintings in the world were unearthed in 1994. Located in Vallon-Pont d'Arc, France, this extraordinary find was made by French speleologist Jean-Marie Chauvet. These ancient cave drawings were created by the Cro-Magnon people, our prehistoric ancestors from the Stone Age. Renowned filmmaker and anthropologist Werner Herzog was granted rare permission to document this remarkable site. In this mesmerizing documentary, Herzog takes us on a journey through a subterranean world adorned with hundreds of stunning artworks estimated to be 32,000 years old. Illuminated by torchlight, he transports us back to prehistoric times, where the drawings of horses, rhinos, bison, bears, and lions briefly come to life. Alongside these depictions of animals, abstract symbols and handprints also dot the cave walls. Janice McNab will delve deeper into the patterns and colors of Swedish folk textiles in 'The Ten Largest' (1970) during her lecture. This lecture is part of the exhibition catalog on Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondriaan. In her text titled 'The Beauty of the Everyday', Janice McNab discusses her archival research on Hilma af Klint's key work, The Ten Largest (1907), which reveals the incorporation of patterns and colors from Swedish folk textiles in these monumental panels. McNab's lecture will explore the vitalistic roots of these patterns and how the specters of such premodern ideas haunt Klint's spiritually-driven artistic research. It will also examine the relevance of this research in today's context, connecting it with McNab's own contemporary eco-vitalistic ideas that are present in her paintings. Janice McNab, a Scottish artist and academic, has been living in the Netherlands for over twenty years. Her new series, Our Spectral Gardens, will be on display at the Maurits van de Laar gallery in The Hague from October 12th to November 5th. McNab is also the Head of MA Artistic Research at The Royal Academy of Art and has published various articles, including ones on the work of Hilma af Klint.

The renowned novelist Marja Pruis will be engaging in a conversation about her latest literary masterpiece, 'Huiswerk', alongside Roos van Rijswijk. Aptly described as a typical Pruis creation, 'Huiswerk' is a work that captivates with its lively and associative narrative, multifaceted characters, inventive storytelling, and a touch of humor that will have readers chuckling throughout. However, beneath its seemingly light-hearted surface, the novel delves into more profound and unexpected themes. In 'Huiswerk', Clara Feij finds herself in the most splendid residence in Amsterdam, where she delegates all cleaning duties to a procession of foreign housekeepers seeking refuge. But when Rose enters her home, everything changes. How can you assist someone when you know nothing about them? And how can trust endure when all evidence points against her? 'Huiswerk' is a striking novel that explores the intricacies of intimate happiness and domestic betrayal. Marja Pruis, known for her debut novel 'Bloem' (2002), which delves into the realms of desire and expectations between men and women, and her subsequent work 'Atoomgeheimen' (2008), which tackles subjects of sexuality, intimacy, and the erosion of ideals, showcases her prowess as a writer. In addition to her role as a literary editor at De Groene Amsterdammer, Pruis also crafts insightful essays on various topics such as humor and beauty standards. Her collection of essays, 'Genoeg nu over mij', earned her the prestigious Jan Greshoff Prize for essay writing in 2019. Furthermore, Pruis has compiled a series of essays titled 'Boos Meisje. Over vrouwen en frictie' (2022), which delves into the complex predicament that girls and women find themselves in. They are expected to be kind yet assertive, but not excessively so, lest they be labeled as angry girls. Save the date! Marja Pruis, along with many other talented writers and poets, will also be gracing the stage at the grand festival evening, Saturday Night Unlimited, on January 20th. This event, hosted at Theater aan het Spui and Filmhuis Den Haag, offers a diverse range of programs across five stages, allowing attendees to curate their own unique experience. The Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) of Leiden University and Art Institute West Den Haag are excited to announce the next installment of their public series, "In the Making." The upcoming session, titled "In the Making #2: Etienne Kallos," will feature filmmaker Etienne Kallos as he delves into the concept of the diasporic body in relation to cinema. Kallos will present his research on the diasporic image and engage in a thought-provoking discussion with experts on Gilles Deleuze and Antonin Artaud. The conversation will examine how the theory of 'modern political cinema' intersects with Artaud's notion of 'the body without organs.' Additionally, the session will explore how bodily movement within the frame of a film can shape a cinema of displacement, acknowledging the experiences of individuals born into states of cultural disruption or who have lost a sense of place. This session on research in art will take place on January 28, 2024, at West Den Haag in Den Haag. Admission is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased for a nominal fee ranging from € 0 to € 5. "In the Making #2: Etienne Kallos" aims to deepen our understanding of artistic practice as a collective endeavor embedded in society and explore the role of art in shaping the present and envisioning possible futures.
