Donna C. Schuele is a faculty member in the political science department at California State University, Los Angeles. She teaches courses in civil rights and civil liberties; government power and accountability; American constitutional and legal history; gender politics, and law; and the Supreme Court. In addition, she regularly teaches lifelong learning courses for the Road Scholar program and the Chautauqua Institution, and speaks to community groups such as the League of Women Voters. She was awarded a Recognition for Teaching Excellence by the American Political Science Association in 2013. Her research focuses on the interaction of law and politics in American society across the nineteenth and twentieth century. She is currently writing a biography of retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and most recently contributed the essay, "Love, Honor, and the Power of Law: Probating the Avila Estate in Frontier California," to On the Borders of Love and Power: Families and Kinship in the Intercultural American Southwest (2012). Her work has also been published in the Yale Journal of Law and Feminism , Law & Social Inquiry , the American Journal of Family Law , Western Legal History , and California History , and her commentaries in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times . In her scheduled lecture on the law, Professor Schuele will explore the dynamic and evolving interpretation of the U.S. Constitution through landmark Supreme Court decisions. Drawing on her extensive research in legal history and her deep understanding of judicial politics, she will examine how constitutional principles such as due process, equal protection, and the separation of powers have been contested and reshaped over time. With particular attention to civil liberties and the impact of social movements on constitutional change, the lecture promises a compelling narrative that connects historical legal struggles to the pressing constitutional questions of today. Whether you're a student of history, law, or politics, Dr. Schuele’s lecture will offer an insightful and engaging analysis of the living Constitution and its role in American democracy. This is an excellent opportunity for alumni, professionals, and community members to engage with and connect with a professor and leader in constitutional law. Light refreshments and snacks will be available. Information Source: OC Cal Alumni Club | eventbrite

Irvine
Family Events
For more than seven decades, The English Institute has been a major resource for developments in criticism, theory, and scholarship, while honoring traditional fields of interest and modes of literary analysis. Three institutions will now host The English Institute conference: Yale University (2015, 2018, and 2023), the University of Chicago (2016, 2019, and 2024), and the University of California at Irvine (2017, 2022, and 2025). The 82nd Annual English Institute meeting, SPECULATIVE, will take place October 17-18, 2025, at the University of California at Irvine. Travel If you are planning on flying to UCI, we recommend flying into John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana, located just three miles from campus. A taxi or rideshare takes only 10 to 15 minutes and costs around $15 to $25. From the airport, drivers can take MacArthur Boulevard south, turn left on Campus Drive, and follow signs into the UCI campus. Public transportation is also available via OCTA bus routes 76 or 401, taking roughly 30 minutes. For those flying into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the drive to UCI typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Ubers, Lyfts, or taxis cost between $70 and $120. Drivers should take I-405 South, exit at University Drive, turn left, then turn right on Campus Drive to reach the main campus. Public transportation from LAX involves taking the FlyAway Bus to Union Station, then boarding an Amtrak or Metrolink train to Irvine Station, followed by a local OCTA bus or rideshare to campus—this trip may take approximately 2.5 hours. From Long Beach Airport (LGB), UCI is about 30 miles away. Rideshares cost around $50 to $80. Drivers should take I-405 South, exit at University Drive, then turn right on Campus Drive to arrive at UCI. If you are traveling from Ontario International Airport (ONT), you should expect a 60- to 90-minute drive. Ubers and Lyfts will cost between $90 and $130. Driving directions include CA-60 West to CA-57 South, then I-5 South to I-405 South, exiting at University Drive. Public transportation is possible but requires several transfers: a bus to the Ontario-East Metrolink Station, then a train to Irvine Station, and finally a local bus or rideshare to UCI. This route takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Parking: If you are driving to campus, UCI offers several visitor parking options, including the Student Center Parking Structure (recommended), Anteater Parking Structure, and Mesa Parking Structure, located just south of the Humanities quad, which is the most convenient option. You may purchase hourly or daily parking permits at automated kiosks or use the ParkbyPlate app or ParkMobile. Rates are approximately $2 per hour or $13 for the day. Credit and debit cards are accepted at all kiosks. Additional information, including updates on parking availability and policies, can be found on the UCI Transportation and Distribution Services website . It's a good idea to check a campus map in advance or use Google Maps for walking directions once parked.
