Once on This Island is an enchanting tale of love and sacrifice set on a small Caribbean island. This captivating legend follows the romance between Ti Moune, a courageous orphan girl, and Daniel Beauxhomme, a wealthy city boy. As a violent storm ravages the island, Ti Moune, guided by the gods, saves Daniel's life after a harrowing car crash. However, her selfless act comes at a great cost - her own soul.
Throughout the story, we are introduced to the stark divide between the light-skinned, affluent landowners and the dark-skinned, impoverished peasants. Ti Moune, chosen by the gods for a special destiny, finds herself entangled in a forbidden love. Despite the opposition from Euralie, her caretaker, and the vast difference in their social statuses, Ti Moune and Daniel become lovers.
As the story unfolds, Daniel's responsibilities and impending marriage to the wealthy Andrea Devereaux threaten to tear them apart. Desperate to save Ti Moune from her fate, Papa Ge, the Demon of Death, arrives to claim her soul. In a heart-wrenching twist, Ti Moune must make an impossible choice - kill Daniel and save herself or let love conquer all.
In the end, Daniel and Andrea's wedding brings a glimmer of hope as they generously distribute coins to the peasants. Tragically, Ti Moune's life comes to a premature end, but her story leaves us with a powerful message - the unyielding power of love triumphs over the fear of death.
