Dances from Turtle Island: A'no:wara Dance Theatre presents Barbara Keneratoni Diabo, an award-winning choreographer and performer with over 30 years of experience. On January 27, 2024, at the Nozhem: First Peoples Performance Space in Peterborough, Ontario, Barbara will showcase a mix program that combines past highlights and selections from her new piece, I Dream in Wampum. Accompanied by her dancers, Barbara will captivate the audience with high lights from her previous creations and offer a sneak peek of her latest work. Additionally, the event will feature a screening of the short film, Smudge.
Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo, a Kanien'kehaka (Mohawk) artist of mixed heritage, dedicates her artistry to shedding light on Indigenous themes, stories, and perspectives. Through her performances, she aims to share her culture and inspire others, fostering a sense of community and cultural pride. Her exceptional talent has garnered recognition, including the Outstanding Touring Production award in the Dora Mavor Awards 2022 for Sky Dancers and the Best Choreography of an Outdoor Show award in Festival Quartiers Danses in 2019 for My Urban Nature. In 2021, she was honored with the Prix de la danse de Montréal in the DANCER category.
Barbara's dedication extends beyond the stage as she collaborates with various organizations to educate the public, create safe spaces, and support Indigenous artists worldwide. As the artistic director and choreographer of A'nó:wara Dance Theatre, an Indigenous-run company, Barbara combines powwow, Haudenosaunee dance, and contemporary styles to create captivating and culturally significant performances. Their mission is to produce high-quality dance works that inspire, uplift spirits, and enhance understanding and communication.
