The Rickshaw presents The Black Haloswith guests, Real SickiesSaturday, January 25th, 2025The Rickshaw Theatre19+Doors: 7:00pmThe Black HalosFormed in the underbelly of the Vancouver punk music scene in 1994, the band was a sneering, snotty, slap in the face to the Seattle grunge scene. Their raucous live shows, particularly an electrifying performance at Seattle’s Rock Candy, garnered the attention of Sub Pop’s Jonathan Poneman, and they promptly signed to Sub Pop imprint Die Young Stay Pretty. They began touring relentlessly with label mates The Murder City Devils, and soon were sharing stages with big names like The Damned, DOA, L7, The Offspring, Social Distortion, and many more. Within a year of recording their self-titled debut album with Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden), the band was back in the studio with the legendary producer to record their seminal second album, The Violent Years. Released on Sub Pop in 2001, the album saw them reach new heights in sales and radio play, including a Top 20 single in Canada with “Some Things Never Fall”; the accompanying video saw regular rotation on both MTV in the United States and Much Music in Canada, helping push the album to the top of Canada’s Earshot Campus Radio Charts! stomprecords.com/bands/black-halos Real SickiesThe year was 2014, the place was Edmonton and the mission was simple. Spread the highly infectious pop punk contagion to the four corners of the earth and beyond. And, just like that, the first wave of Real Sickies was unleashed. A steady stream of demos and EPs quickly established the Sickies as a local virus to be reckoned with. The band fiercely escalated their fever pitch plans of world domination by sharing the stage with heavyweights Stiff Little Fingers, Subhumans, The Real McKenzies, Giuda, Mean Jeans and The Jolts just to name a few. A couple near disasters almost put the Real Sickies out of commission. Lead singer Ben ironically got real sick and required spinal surgery while a couple of founding members stepped down. This would usually be enough to sink any band; but Ben bounced back like a champion, new members stepped up and Real Sickies released their phenomenal debut album “Get Well Soon”. The band immediately shot out on tour making house calls across nation as many new fans happily succumbed to the sickness for the first time. stomprecords.com/bands/real-sickies RSVP on Facebook Refund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled. ProgJect – The Ultimate Prog Rock Expereience is the brainchild of drummer Jonathan Mover and came to fruition out of his childhood love of Prog. “Prog Rock is the reason I play drums,” Mover explains, “but by the time I turned pro, Prog in the classic sense was over. And, although I got to work with some Prog-associated artists–GTR (Steve Hackett and Steve Howe) and Marillion–my career took a decidedly different, though incredibly fortunate path, with artists such as Alice Cooper, Joe Satriani, Aretha Franklin, The Tubes, Shakira, Julian Lennon and others. That being said, I never lost my desire to play the Prog I grew up listening to.” He adds: “The idea and inspiration came in 2019 from my getting a last-minute rescue call to play with the Genesis tribute band, The Musical Box. That not only relit my childhood fire and desire, but made me realize: in the tribute world, if there’s an audience for Genesis, and an audience for Pink Floyd, and YES, and Rush, there must be an audience for King Crimson, Gentle Giant, U.K., Bruford, and Jethro Tull, too. So, why not play them all, since I love them all, and assemble a team of extraordinary musicians that feel the same as I? So I did. And they, like me, wanted to play a wide variety of Prog from all our favorite bands, and therefore thought more of the concept of a legacy ‘homage band’, instead of a tribute band.” Mover says that “the chemistry and dynamics of ProgJect are amazing” and “we’re all very excited to hit the road again, especially now with Alessandro singing; with his four-and-a-half octave range, there are no limits to what we can cover. We love playing this music so much and know how much prog fans love it too, and now more than ever, since most of our prog heros are either gone, or simply not touring anymore.” What is the enduring appeal of Prog? “It’s music that you really listen to, and in some ways, live in,” says Mover. “It’s not music to be played in the background. When you’re into Prog, you’re not only really into listening, but often times, attached to it as well. It’s the same for seeing it played live. It’s more than just a music performance–it’s an experience.” RSVP on FacebookRefund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled. Give It Time by Laure @actuallyitslaure is an exhibition showcasing the recent large-scale ink works of the Hastings based mixed media artist. Laure's artworks are created using the elements and time, making them truly unique and captivating. Through an experiment with time, weather, and emotions, Laure aims to capture and preserve moments in life that are often overlooked or ignored in the realm of social media. Laure's large scale works beautifully depict the mundane, the sad, and the anxious, drawing inspiration from these emotions to create powerful and thought-provoking pieces. Each artwork serves as a reminder that all things pass with time, reinforcing our understanding of the transient nature of life. The process of creating these works involved a range of experiences, from being fired to job hunting and finally finding new work, all while hoping the bills would be paid. These personal experiences have been imprinted onto the canvases, lending them a deeper meaning and connection to the artist's journey. The artworks were born in Laure's back garden, where they were exposed to various external conditions such as storms, snow, and frost. These elements had a profound impact on the ink and paper, adding another layer of complexity and uniqueness to each piece. The result is a collection of truly extraordinary works that invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences and the passage of time. If you're in Hastings on the 10th of February, don't miss the opportunity to witness Laure's exceptional artworks at the Give It Time exhibition.
