Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect is an upcoming event that will delve into the fascinating life of acclaimed architect Julia Morgan. Renowned biographer and historian Victoria Kastner will be leading the conversation, offering her extensive knowledge and insights. Kastner's own connection to Julia Morgan began when she visited the famous Hearst Castle in Cambria, California as a young woman. Intrigued by the lack of information about the architect, Kastner became dedicated to uncovering Morgan's story. As the official historian of Hearst Castle for over three decades, Kastner's expertise is unparalleled. Her recently published book, "Julia Morgan, Architect of Beauty, An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect," provides an intimate look into Morgan's life and achievements. Julia Morgan's impact on the architectural landscape of America, particularly the West, cannot be overstated. She blazed a trail for women in the industry, being the first woman admitted to study architecture at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the first woman licensed to practice architecture in California. With an impressive portfolio boasting around 700 creations, Morgan's most well-known masterpiece is the iconic Hearst Castle. Yet, she also left her mark with various buildings in Northern California, such as the Saratoga Foothill Clubhouse, Saratoga Federated Church Chapel, and the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. Morgan's achievements were acknowledged posthumously when she became the first female architect to receive the American Institute of Architects' Gold Medal award in 2014. The event, to be held at the Saratoga Foothill Club in Saratoga, will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Julia Morgan's life. Kastner will shed light on Morgan's close friendship with William Randolph Hearst, her profound appreciation for California's landscape, her struggles in a male-dominated field, and her unwavering dedication to architecture. Following the conversation, there will be a reception where attendees can meet the author and purchase signed copies of her book. Tickets are available for $15, and the event is scheduled for May 19, 2024. Don't miss the chance to discover the captivating story of Julia Morgan, a true trailblazer in the world of architecture.

Northshire Bookstore is thrilled to partner with the Saratoga Book Festival to present an evening with beloved bestselling author Wally Lamb, in celebration of his new novel The River is Waiting. Lamb will discuss the book and his work with Joe Donahue of WAMC/Northeast Public Radio. From the #1New York Timesbestselling author of two Oprah Book Club Picks—She’s Come UndoneandI Know This Much Is True—Wally Lamb comes the propulsive story of a young father who, after an unbearable tragedy, reckons with the possibility of atonement for the unforgivable. Wally Lamb has always written with compassion for all of his characters, no matter their flaws. But here, in this moving exploration of an otherwise good man and loving father who happens to be an addict, Lamb goes deeply into what it means not only to survive tragedy, but to actually heal from it by stepping tentatively into real forgiveness. I could not put down The River is Waiting, and I predict that you won't be able to either.” —Andre Dubus III, New York Times bestselling author of House of Sand and Fog and Ghost Dogs Wally Lamb is the author of six New York Times bestselling novels: I’ll Take You There, We Are Water, Wishin’ and Hopin’, The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much Is True, and She’s Come Undone. Lamb also edited Couldn’t Keep It to Myself and I’ll Fly Away, two volumes of essays from students in his writing workshop at York Correctional Institution, a women’s prison in Connecticut, where he was a volunteer facilitator for twenty years. The MSAA State Field Tournament is the best opportunity for an archer to demonstrate a well-rounded ability to not only shoot but to endure. The Field tournament brings together the aspects of a 3D tournament and a target tournament. Like a 3D tournament, a course is walked and at shooting stations, shots are taken at targets that vary in distance. An important difference between the 3D tournament and the Field tournament is that multiple arrows are shot at the same target, that at the end of the day add up to more than 100 arrows shot! Online Registration Fees: The additional fees above the normal registration cost are the costs to process the credit card payments, and are strictly a pass-through cost. The MSAA does not gain these fees in any way. Information Source: Minnesota State Archery Association | eventbrite
