Mississauga
Cultural Experiences
This exhibit re-imagines the future of housing through a collection of narrative-driven architectural proposals. Developed in collaboration between Sheridan College and the City of Mississauga, the work explores how gentle density can support more inclusive, adaptable living in our growing cities. Each fourplex tells the story of four units within one house, with distinct characters who have different needs, lifestyles, and relationships. These stories bring the architecture to life by exploring how real people might inhabit and share space while maintaining individuality. Responding to ongoing issues like housing affordability and livable design, the exhibit offers fresh perspectives on how we can thoughtfully shape homes that reflect the diversity of their inhabitants. It challenges the uniformity often seen in housing solutions, presenting work that is creative, responsive, and rooted in everyday experience. The Edges of Being: Absence in Sanskrit Philosophy with Professor Nilanjan Das from the Department of Philosophy. Just as we see material objects like chairs and tables, we also seem to see absences—holes in cheese, shadows on the ground. But do absences exist over and above the positive material objects that surround them? In this talk, Professor Das will explore a debate in first-millennium South Asia about the nature and existence of absence (abhāva). Professor Das focuses on Udayana (10th–11th century), an influential Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika philosopher, who defended non-reductionist realism. For him, absences like holes and shadows depend on positive entities but are nonetheless irreducibly real—no less so than material objects. Can't attend the program in person? Attend via live stream . A link will be sent to all registrants before the program. Information Source: Mississauga Library | eventbrite

This special event offers visitors an opportunity to tour the exhibition The Search for the Black Madonna and Green Tara alongside the artist and curator, gaining deeper insight into the stories, symbolism, and spiritual layers behind the works. Winsom will reflect on her decades-long practice and personal journey, touching on how its influences have shaped her practice. The discussion will also explore the process of developing this exhibition, and Winsom's collaborative project with her daughter, artist Tara Darrall. Don't miss this rich and reflective conversation. Refreshments will be provided. This event is part of Culture Days- Canada’s celebration of arts, culture, and heritage from September 19th - October 12th, 2025. Thousands of free events are presented in hundreds of communities across Canada, welcoming millions of participants to create, share, and celebrate a life enriched by arts and culture. Culture Days encourages the public to discover and champion the importance of arts and culture in their communities, and inspire year-round support of local artists, creators and organizations. Find more free events at culturedays.ca ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Over several decades, Winsom Winsom has expressed her own spiritual journey through her multimedia work and shared her knowledge as a mentor, teacher, and advocate for the arts. For this artist—who has travelled the world and now calls Mississauga her home—art and life are inextricably connected. Her work explores themes of freedom, survivance, resilience, and renewal within the context of the Black Atlantic experience. As a person of African, Maroon, Arawak, Spanish, and Scottish ancestries, Winsom draws from her mixed heritage to incorporate extensive symbolism and ritual references in her work, interpreting the elements, land, animal, and human presence within the context of Afro-centric value systems. Featuring both existing and new bodies of work by this senior artist and self-described “child of the universe,” The Search for the Black Madonna and Green Tara traces the trajectory of Winsom’s emotional, physical, and spiritual journeys. The exhibition includes an expansive collaborative project with Winsom’s daughter, artist Tara Darrall. Together, they explore the layers of their mother-daughter relationship through a suite of paintings. Guided by aspects of the seven chakras—the energy centres within our bodies—these works are a personal meditation on the artists’ intertwined development of their identities. ARTIST BIO An influential figure of the Canadian art world, Winsom Winsom has exhibited her work across Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean, including solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Image Factory Gallery (Belize), the Agnes Etherington Art Gallery (Kingston), and the African American Museum (Boston), as well as group exhibitions at the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto), A Space Gallery (Toronto), Articule (Montreal), Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa), and the 2024 Toronto Biennale, Precarious Joys. Her work has been recognized with multiple awards and grants, including an Honorary Doctorate from the Ontario College of Art and Design University, the Marilyn Lastman Award from the City of Toronto Arts Foundation, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Since 2021 she has been based in Mississauga. Winsom is represented by Clint Roenisch Gallery in Toronto. Funding for the Art Gallery of Mississauga is provided by the City of Mississauga, Canada Council for the Arts, TD Bank Group, Rama Gaming House, and Charitable Gaming Community Good. Depart from the hotel at 8:00 am and return at 5 pm (lunch included). *Ticket required - limited availability* Please note: there will be advanced biosecurity measures in place for the tour. The Canadian Cattle Association and Beef Cattle Research Council have developed biosecurity tips for travellers to limit the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and other infectious diseases. They have also helped us to plan this tour to showcase Canadian beef without putting our host farms at risk. Please note that anyone who lives in or has visited a country 14 days prior to our tour that is known FMD positive or has unreported FMD status will not be able to attend the tour. Additionally, anyone who lives in or has visited a country 14 days prior to our tour that is FMD free with vaccination and has had contact with susceptible livestock species (susceptible species found on pg. 1 of this document .) will also not be able to attend the tour. The FMD status of countries is constantly changing, so we will be sending out a survey closer to the event, but if you already know you will be in one of these countries before the tour, please do not register for the tour. To find the FMD status of your country click HERE . Use the filters to search your country and Foot and Mouth Disease. If you require assistance, please let us know. Additional biosecurity measures will include clean booties at each farm, hand and phone wipes, and visitor logs provided to farms. Calling all squints! Step into the world of Bones for this adults-only field trip to the University of Toronto’s infamous Forensic Crime Scene House–aka the “Murder House.” In honour of the hit TV show’s 20th anniversary, join RCIScience as we dig into the real-life science behind forensic anthropology and fundamental crime scene investigation techniques. Nestled in the woods of UTM’s Erindale Campus, you’ll investigate fingerprints, test evidence for blood, examine bones*, and hone your skills identifying trauma, decay, and more. Whether you're a diehard Bones fan or true crime junkie, it's time to grab your lab coat and channel your inner Dr. Brennan. *NB: while the collection includes real animal bone, casts are used in lieu of any human elements.
