Through outdoor education, we aim to foster responsible environmental stewardship and a deeper connection to nature. Research shows that time spent outdoors improves mental well-being, cognitive function, and problem-solving skills, while enriching overall quality of life. This program promotes ecological literacy and conservation-minded values, which are key to addressing today’s environmental challenges. Participants in Fishing 101 will learn about the different kinds of fisheries in Alberta, how to identify Alberta's sport fish species, and the various tackle used to catch them. We’ll review the Alberta Sportfishing Regulations and how to interpret the harvest limits for different fisheries. After the presentation in the clubhouse, we’ll head down to the fish pond with fishing rods & tackle to learn hands-on fishing techniques as we try to catch some rainbow trout in our Fish Pond. Registrants will learn: safety precautions and equipment the best times to go fishing essential fishing equipment and tackle how to tie a fisherman's knot how to cast and reel in your lure how to effectively work your lure how to set the hook how to measure the length of your fish the proper technique for gently releasing your fish Bring your enthusiasm, we'll provide the fishing gear, learning opportunities and the pond to fish in! Minimum Attendance Age If a youth is attending without adult accompaniment, they must be 15 years of age or older. If the youth is accompanied by an adult however, there really isn’t a minimum age. As long as they are old enough to make it through this session's activities and do so safely, they are absolutely welcome to attend. Session Leads Biographies Don Brockway Don Brockway has been hunting since he was 12, and fishing since he was a young boy. With a profound appreciation for nature, he loves hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. After a 31-year career as a Locomotive Engineer with Canadian Pacific Railway, the SPFGA is fortunate to be able to call Don our Maintenance Technician. Brandon Myre Brandon Myre is one of our new SPFGA Board members who chose to join our team because his interests and values align closely with those of the SPFGA. As an Executive Union Officer and Committee Chairperson with Canadian Pacific Railway, and as an avid hunter, archer and angler, Brandon has tonnes of experience coaching and mentoring people of all ages on a multitude of topic areas. Delinda Ryerson Delinda Ryerson has nearly three decades of experience in fisheries and wildlife-related research and management in Alberta. She served as a Fisheries Biologist for Alberta Fish and Wildlife for nine years. Some of her work was integral in determining the status of northern pike fisheries throughout the province, and the subsequent provincial harvest limit reductions for northern pike. For the past two years, she has served as the Executive Director of the Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association (SPFGA). In this role, she has been instrumental in launching the SPFGA Naturalist Series, the SPFGA Outdoor Woman’s Program, and the SPFGA Outdoor Youth Program, all aimed at reconnecting people with nature and the outdoors. Funding This session was made possible through a grant from the Alberta Conservation Association’s Conservation, Community, and Education Grant. FAQs Will refreshments be provided? Water from the water cooler in the clubhouse and some light refreshments will be available. Anything that participants should know? Remember to dress for the forecasted weather conditions as you will be outside. What happens if there's bad weather? Unless the weather poses safety concerns, this event will proceed. Is an SPFGA membership required in order to register? No, these sessions are open to both members and non-members. Refund Policy We will refund registration fees if an event is cancelled. GDME - Fundamentals of Gas Detection This popular single day course is designed to give the attendee an introduction into the hazardous world of gas detection. This class is a great option for anyone new to working around hazardous atmospheres, looking to understand how gas sensors work, or wanting to sharpen their skills. Class instruction includes: Defining terminology routinely used in the industry; common gas hazards and the sensor technology used to detect those threats, as well as the applications where they may be found and determining which products are right for the job. The comprehensive course offers a hands-on overview of operation, general maintenance, and technical servicing of Industrial Scientific Portable gas monitors. In addition, attendees will learn about determining the right monitor for the job, configuration and use of docking stations, connected safety through various wireless communication networks, and leveraging iNet to maximize the success of your gas detection program. The Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association (SPFGA) is excited to announce the launch of their new series of Naturalist sessions, starting with the SPFGA Naturalist Series - Owls, Owlers, and Owling in Alberta. These sessions aim to connect participants with nature and increase their appreciation of Alberta's natural heritage. The first session will feature Gordon Court, Provincial Wildlife Status Biologist with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, who will share his extensive knowledge about owls in Alberta. During the session, participants will have the opportunity to learn about all the owl species in Alberta, as well as the conservation concerns that affect some of these species. Gordon Court will also introduce the passionate group of individuals known as Owlers, who engage in activities such as listening for owls, photographing them, and even building and installing owl nest boxes. In fact, following the presentation, participants will have a hands-on experience assembling Northern Saw-whet Owl nest boxes, which will be installed at the Ketchamoot Creek Recreation Property. The SPFGA Naturalist Series - Owls, Owlers, and Owling in Alberta is open to individuals aged 15 and older. If a youth is accompanied by an adult, there is no minimum age requirement. The event will take place at the Ketchamoot Creek Property in Sherwood Park. Refreshments will be provided, and the event will proceed unless there are safety concerns due to bad weather.
