Clay Mask Making Workshop with Ana Balzan | Firehouse Art Center
Arts
Join Ana Balzan, Ceramicist and Artist Member of the Year, for an engaging and educational Clay Mask Making Workshop. In this workshop, Ana will guide students through the process of creating their own unique clay masks.
Participants will begin by learning the basics of skull proportions, examining the height, width, and length of the head using a helpful generic proportions calculator. Ana will then demonstrate how to use additive processes to sculpt realistic features and bone structure, while applying the learned face proportions.
As the workshop progresses, students will have the opportunity to add masses and develop the primary features of the mask, such as the nose, lips, and eyeballs. Ana will provide three female face images to serve as inspiration for participants' creations.
Throughout the workshop, Ana will offer guidance and assistance, helping students refine and reshape their mask's features to bring their artistic vision to life. Participants will also learn how to create slip to join clay pieces together, and how to clean the surface using a scrubby pad and terry cloth.
By the end of the workshop, students will have a completed human mask ready for display. Ana will show participants how to form holes in the mask, allowing it to be easily hung on a wall using string or wire.
The masks created during the workshop will be fired, with bisque firing included in the price of the workshop. Students will be able to pick up their masks two weeks after the class, at which point they can choose to paint them at home or have them glazed at the Firehouse for an additional $15.
