Nadia will sign copies of her book after the presentation. At Nadia's request, masks are required at this event, thank you. Click Here to preorder a copy of A Voice For Hope . Each preorder gets entered in a raffle to win a gift basket of goodies from Nadia. The remarkable life of Myrlie Evers-Williams is honored and celebrated in this stunningly illustrated picture book biography of a civil rights hero--the very first of its kind.
Myrlie Evers-Williams’ voice is gentle yet strong, soft yet powerful. It is a soaring song of hope. Myrlie’s voice didn’t start out that way. She was born into the segregated South and the beautiful brown color of her skin made her a target for hate. It meant she didn’t have the same opportunities as white children, and that meant her dream of playing music onstage one day would be harder to achieve. But this didn’t stop Myrlie. As she grew, she marched for equal rights alongside her husband and activist, Medgar Evers. She fought against Jim Crow laws and for voting rights. She became the chair of the NAACP, and finally she realized her dream of performing at Carnegie Hall. After that, as a voice for hope and change, Myrlie spoke at President Obama’s second inauguration, inspiring a nation. Nadia Salomon’s lyrical text and London Ladd’s exquisite artwork honor and celebrate the legendary life of Myrlie Evers-Williams and share her message of hope with the world. NADIA SALOMON is a #PitMad Success Story and award-winning author of Goodnight Ganesha, which is a Bank Street Best Book, ALSC DIA Selection, and #NCTEWow book. She is also the author of A Voice of Hope: The Myrlie Evers-Williams Story, the first picture book biography ever written about the iconic civil rights activist. Her upcoming picture book, A Rakhi for Rakesh, is a heartwarming story about sibling rivalry set against the Hindu holiday, Raksha Bandhan. Nadia writes on themes of South Asian and Caribbean culture, STEM, nonfiction, and humor. Nadia is an award-winning journalist and holds a journalism degree from Emerson College. When not participating in her own goodnight rituals or spinning silly yarns... you'll find her working closely with SCBWI, 12x12 Challenge, Kids Comics Unite, and Storyteller Academy. CHRISTINA GRAY is the author of the cookbook, Be Free Cooking - The Allergen Aware Cook. She is an aspiring picture book writer. She first met Nadia at the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrator's conference in summer 2018. They have been in a critique group together ever since. Rita Duffy was born in Belfast and graduated with an honorary BA and MA in Fine Art from the University of Ulster in 1985. One of Ireland's groundbreaking visual artists, she has produced acclaimed public art projects, including her early project Thaw, inspired by the Belfast ship Titanic. This post-conflict project explored Belfast’s relationship with the iceberg and aimed to connect local experiences of colonialism and sectarianism with a universal climate crisis. In 2011, she was awarded a Leverhulme Fellowship to work at the Transitional Justice Institute, University of Ulster. She was recognised for her contribution to visual arts in Ireland in 2018 and elected to Aosdana, Ireland’s elected “people of the arts.” She was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Architects and was an associate at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she looked at the role of art in post-conflict societies. In 2024, she was appointed the Charlotte Maxeke-Mary Robinson Irish South Africa Research Chair at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. Her recent projects include The Shirt Factory Project, The Souvenir Shop, Soften the Border, and The Raft. She has held residencies at the Long Room Hub at Trinity College in Dublin and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Duffy's work is held in museum and private collections worldwide and her public art projects continue to grow in scale and ambition, exploring issues of female identity, history and politics, and borders. Cosponsored by Irish Studies at Boston College and the Art, Art History, and Film Department. All Lowell Humanities Series lectures are free and open to the public. Registration via Eventbrite is required for in-person attendance.
