A hands-on course for beginners to craft a beautiful, functional solid Oak stool. This is a 1 day course aimed at begginners and hobbists and held at my workshop in Newhaven and will have a maximum of four people and will run on the 13th September 2025. The Sunday Life Drawing Club will be hosting an untutored life drawing session on 28 January at The Heart of Newhaven in Newhaven City. This session will take place from 1 to 4 pm. Participants are required to bring their own materials, although boards, easels, and clips will be available for use. The model will strike a series of dynamic poses, ranging from 2 to 40 minutes in duration. The class format will consist of various poses, including 10 two-minute poses and five five-minute poses from 1 to 1.45 pm, followed by a break. From 2 to 2.45 pm, there will be three ten-minute poses and one fifteen-minute pose, followed by another break. The final session, from 3 to 4 pm, will include one twenty-minute pose and one forty-minute pose. Please note that slight time alterations may occur. We’ve teamed up with Ouse Valley Climate Action and Sustainable Seaford to present The Living Coast Undersea Experience in community, arts and visitor centres across the region. Book now! What is it? It’s a unique, interactive virtual reality experience & 360 film that lets users, of all ages, dive in the Marine Conservation Zone, which runs between Brighton Marina and Beachy Head & on to Hastings, without getting wet. Wearing a VR headset, you can explore a 3.5m square area amidst the area’s unique chalk gullies in the chalk reef, lifting rocks & looking around to find marine life such as the Short Snouted Seahorse, Undulate Rays & Moon Jellyfish. The aim of the course is to offer you a broad foundation sculpture processes and related materials with an emphasis on experimentation. From an art historical context we will explore materials such as modelling in clay, basic plaster moulds, modelling and constructing in plaster, wood construction and surface finishes. Your tutor Julian Wild has over 25 years of teaching experience and has been making sculpture for the same amount of time as well as being a past Vice- President of The Royal Society of Sculptors. Guided by experienced tutor Elaine Speirs, you will engage in painting and drawing from an inspiring range of still-life setups, experimenting with mark-making, composition and expressive techniques. Throughout the week, we will take inspiration from artists such as Berthe Morisot, Monet, Joan Mitchell, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Manet, studying their approaches to sketching and painting. By the end of the course, you will expand your artistic language and visual storytelling, build confidence in mark-making and creative expression, and leave with a dynamic sketchbook full of ideas, studies and small paintings.
