The Archive of Voices at Tisch Drama is proud to present the third annual event in celebration of our digital archive of plays written by underrepresented voices, amplifying a multiplicity of perspectives from around the world, and queering the canon. In collaboration with NYU Libraries, this year’s event, “Escaping the Binary: Trans Artists In Dialogue will celebrate the work of non-binary and trans artists including MJ Kaufman, Robert “Silk” Mason, Jasmine La Beija, and Sloane Spencer. Moderated by Drama alum and faculty member, Jess Barbagallo and current Drama student, Ellis Van Houten, the conversation will focus on moving between the disciplines of theatre, music and dance, and genders—trans, gender fluid, and queer artists are represented. How do gender queer artists engage their identity in their training and their life as artists? How have they innovated the industry and what is the work ahead? What are the histories or legacies these artists draw upon to make their own work and shape the future of the performing arts? We welcome you to join us for a lively conversation as well as samples from the panelists' work. Reception to follow. Walter Hopps—The Dream Colony: A Life in Art (Bloomsbury, 2024) An innovative, iconoclastic curator of contemporary art, Walter Hopps founded his first gallery at the age of 21. At 24, he opened the Ferus Gallery with then-unknown artist Edward Kienholz. Ferus turned the spotlight on a new generation of West Coast artists, premiered Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, and was at one point shut down by the LA vice squad for a show of Wallace Berman's edgy art. In the sixties, Hopps mounted the first museum retrospectives of Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Cornell and the first museum exhibition of Pop Art—before it was even known as Pop Art. When Hopps became the director of Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art at age 34, the New York Times hailed him as “the most gifted museum man on the West Coast (and, in the field of contemporary art, possibly in the nation).” A few years before his death in 2005, Hopps began work on this book, a vivid, personal, surprising, irreverent, and enlightening account of his life and of some of the greatest artistic minds of the twentieth century. Deborah Treisman has been the fiction editor of the New Yorker since 2003, and is the host of the award-winning The New Yorker: Fiction podcast. She was formerly the managing editor of the art and literary quarterly Grand Street, for which Walter Hopps was the art editor. She is also the editor of the book 20 Under 40: Stories from The New Yorker. Anne Doran is an artist and a writer and editor for the visual arts. She has written for Artforum, Art in America, ARTnews, Mousse, Collector Daily, Time Out New York, and Tricycle: The Buddhist Review. From 1996 to 2004, she was an editor at the art and literary quarterly Grand Street. David Salle helped define the post-modern sensibility by combining figuration with an extremely varied pictorial language. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at museums and galleries worldwide, and Salle's paintings are in the permanent collections of major museums throughout America as well as Europe and Asia. Although known primarily as a painter, Salle's work grows out of a long-standing involvement with performance. Over the last 35 years, he has worked with choreographer Karole Armitage, creating sets and costumes for many of her ballets and opera productions. In addition, Salle is a prolific writer on art. He is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books, and his collection of essays, How to See: Looking, Talking, and Thinking about Art, was published by W.W. Norton in 2016. This event will take place in person at192Booksat19210th Ave. Seating is limited. The discussion will also be streamed directly onPCG Studio at 7:00 PM ET. There is no login required. In lyric experiment and searing insight, Trish Salah locates the subject in a minefield of dispossession, and thinks in often discomfiting ways about how a poetics of gender liberation might meaningfully expand the projects of anti-racist and anti-colonial social transformation. Lou Cornum thinks through disaster and utopia, making sense of accumulated forms of consciousness across centuries of struggle to illuminate how an unlivable world could be made otherwise. Join us for a conversation between artist Adrienne Elise Tarverand Jenée-Daria Strand, Assistant Curator at Public Art Fund. The discussion will delve into the inspiration and references in Tarver’s Public Art Fund exhibition She who sits, now on view on JCDecaux bus shelters in New York City, Chicago, and Boston. They will discuss the work’s cultural connections historically and presently, and connect the works in the exhibition to other chapters of Tarver’s artistic practice. She who sits is Tarver’s first solo public art exhibition and features six new works that continue her exploration of the centrality of the Black matriarch. Each subject is seated in an intimate environment and each painting is inspired by the artist’s personal archive as well as media archives–especially that of Ebony Magazine, a cornerstone of culture, news, and entertainment. Tarver’s imagery positions the act of sitting as a reclamation of rest and power. Attend in person at The Cooper Union. Registration is required, and capacity is limited. Seating is first come, first served, so please arrive early. Your registration does not guarantee a seat. Doors will close at 6:45pm. Help us build out the vision of next year's leaders. ABOUT THE BOOK From standup comedian Youngmi Mayer, an unforgettable memoir written with “raw, enviable freedom that simply floors you,” interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality in America, navigating a tumultuous childhood in Korea and Saipan, and coming to terms with her parents’ shortcomings (Michelle Zauner). “Do you know what happens if you laugh while crying? Hair grows out of your butthole.” It was a constant truism Youngmi Mayer’s mother would say threateningly after she would make her daughter laugh while crying. Her mother used it to cheer her up in moments when she could tell Youngmi was overtaken with grief. The humorous saying would never fail to lighten the mood, causing both daughter and mother to laugh and cry at the same time. Her mother had learned this trick from her mother, and her mother had learned this from her mother before her: it had also helped an endless string of her family laugh through suffering. In I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea, while reflecting how years later, their wounds affect her in New York City as a single mom, all the while interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality. Youngmi jokes through these stories in hopes of passing onto the reader what her family passed down to her: The gift of laughing while crying. The gift of a hairy butthole. Because throughout it all, the one thing she learned was one cannot exist without the other. And like a yin and yang, this duality is reflected in this whip-smart, heart-wrenching, and disarmingly funny memoir told by a bright new voice with so much heart and wisdom. Modernism in Irish Women's Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) examines the tangled relationship between contemporary Irish women writers and literary modernism. In the early decades of the twenty-first century, Irish women's fiction has drawn widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, with a surprising number of these works being commended for their innovative redeployment of literary tactics drawn from early twentieth-century literary modernism. But this strategy is not a new one. Across more than a century, writers from Kate O'Brien to Sally Rooney have manipulated and remade modernism to draw attention to the vexed nature of female privacy, exploring what unfolds when the amorphous nature of private consciousness bumps up against external ordering structures in the public world. Living amid the tenaciously conservative imperatives of church and state in Ireland, their female characters are seen to embrace, reject, and rework the ritual of prayer, the fixity of material objects, the networks of the digital world, and the ordered narrative of the book. The writers studied here, among them Elizabeth Bowen, Edna O'Brien, Anne Enright, Anna Burns, Claire-Louise Bennett, and Eimear McBride, employ the modernist mode in part to urge readers to recognize that female interiority, the prompt for many of the movement's illustrious formal experiments, continues to provide a crucial but often overlooked mechanism to imagine ways around and through seemingly intransigent social problems, such as class inequity, political violence, and sexual abuse. Paige Reynolds, Professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, publishes on the subjects of modernism, drama and performance, and modern and contemporary Irish literature. She is author of Modernism in Irish Women’s Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) and Modernism, Drama, and the Audience for Irish Spectacle (Cambridge UP, 2007). She also has edited the collections Modernist Afterlives in Irish Literature and Culture (Anthem Press, 2016), The New Irish Studies (Cambridge UP, 2020), and (with Eric Falci) Irish Literature in Transition, Volume 6, 1980-2020 (Cambridge UP, 2020). Paige will be in conversation with Emily C. Bloom, Public Humanities Fellow at Sarah Lawrence College. Her debut memoir, I Cannot Control Everything Forever: A Memoir of Motherhood, Science, and Art was published with St. Martin’s Press in 2024. Her first book, The Wireless Past: Anglo-Irish Writers and the BBC, 1931-1968 (Oxford, 2016) examines the role of public broadcasting in shaping twentieth-century literature. Her articles have appeared in Public Books, Eire-Ireland, The Irish Times, and elsewhere. Information Source: Glucksman Ireland House NYU | eventbrite

In his poem Phosphorous, Bread, Coffee (2009), published in As-Safir, Hilal Chouman writes: “I discovered that my skin is not white. I became certain of this when I saw the white spots trickle through my skin... The fire reached my bones. Whiteness consumed me.” This lecture confronts the joint onslaught of military and white supremacy on southern Lebanon as a stark manifestation of the global expansionist project aimed at dominating the contemporary night. Specifically, it reveals how farmers and shepherds, recognizing the mounting conflict between light and life in their homeland, aimed their spades at their oppressors and wielded darkness into their arsenal of life-making tools. For even their strongest walls had been destroyed, and with them the delusion that architecture, in its traditional sites and forms, could protect from the enemy’s weapons, systems, and environments. By examining how they learned to carve liberated spaces from their fertile nights, this lecture aims to foreground a new practice of darkness, a new alliance with the night, one that molts architecture’s colonial imprints by confronting the discipline from its shadows. Moving between research, built, and decimated projects, it aims to highlight a history, especially an environmental history, that falls outside documented episodes of territorial expansion. To read it at night is to stretch these colonial outbursts so thinly, so delicately that they allow for glimpses into the labor of those committed to the pursuit of life in the brightness of imperialism. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Ralph Karam. Mohamad Nahleh is Assistant Professor of architecture at The Ohio State University. His research and practice engage the fields of environmental history, cultural anthropology, and postcolonial literature in expanding the role and imagination of the night in architecture. Recognizing the night as a space rather than a time, Nahleh’s work unsettles the current interchangeability between ‘night design’ and ‘light design’ by charging architecture with the urgency to overcome the Western metaphors of light and darkness. His forthcoming book, Design After Dark, studies the transformation of the night in the Middle East following the expansion of Ottoman, French, and Zionist colonial projects. It reveals, in particular, how the people of Jabal ‘Amil in Lebanon collaborated with the night to design their liberation. His writing has been published in several journals and magazines, including Places, Thresholds, the Journal of Architectural Education, and The Funambulist. Nahleh is also a practicing architect in Lebanon. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Gen X has been blowing up our comments saying they need their own party, so we started one. The Lost Generation is a new 80s-centric dance concept by Matinee Social Club, focused on celebrating the sounds of Gen X. Come enjoy an early evening dance party from 6-10pm on Friday. The MusicMostly 80s with adjacent hits from just before and after as well. Songs that defined Gen X. Dress CodeUsually we encourage disco chic, but for this party, it's 80's chic if anything. If you're not one for dressing up, no worries. Just no athletic wear or anything too casual. What to expect? A night of 80s & vintage pop amongst a beautiful crowd of 40 somethings. The music will escalate by 7:00pm, pizza will be served at ~8pm and is included with your ticket. What is Matinee Social Club?Love to party, but also love a good night’s rest? With Matinée, you can have both. It’s a “night time” dance party that lets you have a wild night out…and be home by 11pm. The party starts at 5pm, peaks at 8, over at 10. Oh and we serve pizza around 7:30pm to give you a second wind. Some reviews from past Matinéers… “Omg y’all solved nightlife.” “This is the most fun I’ve ever had before 9pm.’ “I feel way too young to be here” – Gen Z The Matinée MissionNightlife pretty much only caters to 20 somethings. Matinée wants to change that. We’re working to create a space where our fellow Millennials and beyond can step away from adult responsibilities and let loose for a while – creating memories with old friends and hopefully make some new ones. If that sounds like your ideal night, we hope you’ll join us. Information Source: Matinée Social Club | eventbrite

Radiant Human serves as a conduit for those seeking a new kind of self-exploration — a brief, metaphysical vision quest, compelling us toward a uniquely tangible kind of self-discovery. Occupying the gray space between science and mysticism, Radiant Human immerses us in the quantifiable forces just outside of human perception — helping us to acknowledge the naked energies we all radiate into our world.
