Instituto Cervantes Dublin opens the doors to another edition of the ISLA Festival welcoming two versatile writers who have built an exceptionally high-quality literary corpus: Andrés Barba and Audrey Magee. Andrés Barba's extensive work spans genres and formats, from novels to essays, from fictionalized biographies to fantastic novels, and from poetry to translation. Audrey Magee's work has been described as intelligent, provocative, fresh, and unusual without losing its sense of humor. We invite you to listen to these two authors who seem to dare to tackle anything, in conversation with fellow writer and journalist, Martin Doyle. Andrés Barba is a writer from Spain. He gained recognition in 2001 with La hermana de Katia, followed by two novellas and six more novels that established him as one of the most important writers of his generation in Spain. He is also the author of essays and poetry, as well as the translator of over thirty authors into Spanish. His work has been translated into twenty-two languages. He lives in Argentina. Audrey Magee is an award-winning writer who lives in Wicklow, Ireland. Her novels, The Colony and The Undertaking, have been nominated for several prizes including the Booker Prize, the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the Irish Book Awards and the Kerry Group Book Awards. She is the 2023 recipient of The InWords Literary Award. The Colony and The Undertaking are being adapted for film, and have been translated into almost 20 languages. Martin Doyle is Books Editor of The Irish Times, where he has worked since 2007. He is a former Editor of The Irish Post and The Times in London. He is the author of Dirty Linen: The Troubles in My Own Place (Merrion Press, 2023) which was shortlisted for Irish Nonfiction Book of the Year. The Lincoln University Sport and Recreation Forum Join us to celebrate the sport and recreation sector. You will hear from experts in the field, Lincoln academics, and students about their research. This is a free event, open to Lincoln students and staff, sport and recreation sector professionals, and anyone interested in the area. This years keynote speakers will be James Jowsey and Kent Somerfield from Christchurch City Council and Ged Robinson from Betterman. James and Kent will focus on developments with two of the major projects in the region, Parakiore and Te Kaha, while Ged will discuss Betterman's exciting work improving men's wellbeing and mental health. This will be followed by senior lecturer Mike Annear, who will discuss his research in promoting physically active lifestyles, particularly in ageing populations. We will then hear about student research at LU - PhD student Siyang Zheng will discuss his research on movement characteristics in basketball and undergraduate Ella Scarlet will explain her research on outdoor fitness equipment. Finally a short panel discussion will allow the speakers to answer questions and consider how they relate to their particular context. ISLA Festival brings together three writers which stories and novels transport us to fictional worlds that reflect our contemporary life through the societies they depict: American, Peruvian and Mexican. In the ensemble novel La lealtad de los caníbales, Diego Trelles (Peru) paints a heartbreaking yet humorous portrait of Peruvian society, centered around a Lima tavern where betrayal, madness, corruption, abuses, and prejudices walk hand in hand. In Tumbas de agua, Mexican writer Miguel Tapia contrasts two worlds: the wealth and extravagance of illicit businesses and the humility and exploitation of workers in a Mexico that challenges the value system. Meanwhile, Una Mannion, in her novel Tell Me What I Am, narrated by two female voices, unravels a story of domestic violence interwoven with the love and strength of its characters. Una Mannion was born in Philadelphia and is based in County Sligo Ireland. Her debut novel A Crooked Tree made the Irish bestsellers list, was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards and the Dalkey Emerging Writer Award and won the Kate O’Brien Prize. Her second novel Tell Me What I Am was shortlisted for the Encore Awards and was the winner of the prestigious Gold Dagger at the CWA Dagger Awards. Miguel Tapia is a Mexican author. He studied engineering, music, literature and journalism, and has worked in these and other fields in various cities. He is the author of short story collections, novels and essays that have been published in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, France and Spain. Miguel Tapia holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic American literature and teaches at the University of Paris-Est - Créteil in France. Diego Trelles Paz is a writer and academic from Perú that holds a degree in Communications, a master's in Aesthetics, and a Ph.D. in Hispanic American Literature. He is the author of short story collections, essays and novels. His works have been translated into French, English, Italian, and Hungarian. His latest novel is La lealtad de los caníbales. The Addams Family clashes with the seemingly ‘normal’ family of their daughter’s fiance. Will the two families ever get along? Or will it be a feud for the ages? They’re scary and they’re spooky- This will be a mostly light-hearted romp with genuine feelings as you play two over-the-top families going through some serious culture shock. Expect family expectations, disagreements, and questioning what it means to be an outsider. Some frightening or horrific elements may be discussed (after all, what did Auntie Forcible do with all her ex-husbands?), but there will not be gore on screen. You will larp as either a member of the Addams Family or a member of the fiance’s family. No canon Addamses will be appearing as player characters. (ie. you won’t be Gomez or Morticia, you’ll be original Addamses.) Playing a member of the Normal Family will also be fun- you get to be the ‘straight man’ for a lot of the jokes, as well as having some juicy backstories of your own. Who knows, at the end you might decide you like the Addams more. The larp will be played in a series of timed ‘episodes’ to capture that sitcom feeling. The kids break the news, the families meet, they celebrate a holiday together, they go on a family vacation. It ends with the re-hearse-al and the wedding! The Orchestra returns to the Assembly Rooms for their second performance this year in the splendid setting of the ballroom. The concert opens with Fauré's whimsical suite, ‘Masques et Bergamasques’ followed by Schubert's Introduction and Rondo for Violin and Orchestra, performed by Orchestra Leader Caroline Siriwardena. The first half concludes with the beautiful Fauré Pavane. After a chance to visit the bar in the interval the orchestra performs Mozart's Symphony No. 40 (K550), one of the last works he composed, a work full of drama and unexpected harmonies as well as the beatuy you expect from this great composer.
