Join the upcoming Stephen McGrath Author Talk event at Preston Library. Stephen McGrath, an award-winning author, will be discussing his captivating book, Jimmy Sharman’s Boxers. Set during the tumultuous period of the First World War, this novel explores the unique story of Jimmy Sharman's Boxing Troupe. Despite the war raging on, the troupe chooses not to enlist and instead embarks on a tour of small country towns, hosting thrilling boxing matches. This tale sheds light on the fighters who bravely defy societal expectations.
Stephen McGrath, a talented writer, has received accolades such as the prestigious The Age Short Story Award. Originally from New Zealand, he now resides in Melbourne with his wife and two children. The inspiration for this remarkable novel came from a photograph Stephen discovered in Jimmy Sharman's personal collection at the Mitchell Library in NSW. The image suggested that Jimmy Sharman chose not to join the war and continued to tour with his Boxing Troupe. Jimmy Sharman’s Boxers is the result of 15 years of extensive research and writing, marking Stephen McGrath's debut novel.
