In this mixed media workshop, artists will learn to create multi-layered, textured artwork using a variety of materials, including, but not limited to, paper, newspaper, twine, sand, earth, photographs, found objects, acrylic paints, mediums, colored pencils, and charcoal. Participants will explore techniques for concealing and revealing hidden imagery and text to craft a personal narrative, while also adding texture through the use of matte medium compound and gesso. This workshop encourages artists to harness mixed media as a powerful tool for self-expression. The morning session will feature a brief history of mixed media and collage, highlighting examples from contemporary and modern artists. Demonstrations of various techniques will be provided, along with thematic prompts to inspire creativity and guide the development of initial drafts. Students will be encouraged to use their imagination and push the boundaries of their creativity. The afternoon session will be dedicated to refining and completing the final artwork, culminating in a group critique that fosters constructive feedback and shared learning. A list of supplies and materials needed will be shared two weeks prior to the workshop -- as well as the Instructor providing a a list of project ideas. This event is for ages 16+, but if you're looking for a family-friendly option, don’t miss our monthly Family Paint Night at Ocean5, which welcomes all ages! No experience necessary—our Artvana Artist Coach will guide you through every step of the painting process and help you tap into your inner creativity. We’ll be painting the beautiful 'Flower Patch' artwork on canvas. Ocean5 will have its full menu available, including restaurant, bar, and café options. Come early and enjoy a few rounds of bowling before we start painting, or stay afterward for more fun! You may even catch some live music in this venue. It’s the perfect chance to unwind, relax, and enjoy a night out solo or with friends. Ron will speak about how to approach a gallery, what the review process is like, what does a gallery look for in an artist, online representation vs. in-gallery representation, and more! You will hear about the Barlow Gallery's superior online portal along with their inviting retail experience where artists and photographers share their work, express their stories, and amplify their connection with customers. Each year, the Students of Distinction program shines a spotlight on exceptional high school seniors who have made a lasting impact on their schools and communities. Nominated by teachers, peers, and community members, these students stand out not just for what they’ve achieved—but for who they are. The entire community is invited to join in the awards dinner and ceremony honoring the distinguished graduating seniors from Gig Harbor, Peninsula or Henderson Bay high schools. Ticket price includes full meal, beverages and awards ceremony. Typically, more than 175 students are nominated as Students of Distinction Scholars . Finalists are reviewed and selected by a panel at each high school. The journey includes thoughtful interviews with community leaders. This year, 31 graduating seniors from the Peninsula School District will be honored at the 23rd annual Students of Distinction Awards Ceremony on May 21st. Scholars are honored in one of seven categories that reflect the many ways students lead, excel, and inspire: Academics Athletics Career & Technical Excellence Community Service Music, Arts & Drama Overcoming Adversity Science & Technology It’s a celebration not only of accomplishments, but of character, resilience, creativity, and heart. Since its founding in 2003, the Students of Distinction program has celebrated the achievements of more than 630 graduating seniors from the Peninsula School District. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and donors, the program has awarded over $276,000 in scholarships over the past 22 years—helping to support and empower the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers. Whether you haven't ridden in years or you like to shred, It's all about having fun surrounded by awesome women in a lovely park, riding bikes together. This is a no drop ride, we take plenty of breaks and take it easy. Whether it’s walking up the first hill or going down a trail, we are all just in it for the fun! Rain or shine, we ride.
