Summer, 1989: ten-year-old Suzanne is drawn like a magnet to her father’s forbidden world of electric guitars and tricked-out cars. When her mother remarries, she jumps at the chance to tag along on the concert tour that just might be Gil and the Kills’ wild ride to glory. But fame has sharper fangs than anybody realized, and as the band blazes up the charts, internal power struggles set Gil and his group on a collision course destined for a bloody reckoning—one shrouded in mystery and lore for decades to come. The only witness to a desperate act of violence, Suzanne spends the next twenty-nine years trying to disappear. She trades the music and mayhem of her youth for the quiet of the suburbs and the company of her mild-mannered husband Rob. But when her father’s sudden death resurrects the troubled past she tried so hard to bury, she leaves it all behind and hits the road in search of answers. Hitching her fate and Gil’s beloved car to two vagabonds who call an old Airstream trailer home, she finds everything she thought she’d lost forever: desire, adventure, and the woman she once wanted to be. But Rob refuses to let her go. Determined to bring her back where she belongs, he chases her across the country—and drives her to a desperation all her own. Drenched in knock-down drag-out rock and roll, Hot Wax is a raucous, breakneck ride to hell and back—where getting lost might be the only way to find yourself and save your soul. Photo credit: Cait Brady M.L. Rio, the breakout bestselling author of If We Were Villains and Graveyard Shift , has accomplished the rare feat of being embraced by literary critics while also receiving rave reviews from BookTok where she has become a sensation. Her books have earned words of praise for people like Emily St. John Mandel, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, and Chuck Wendig. An avid record collector, concert-goer, and music journalist herself, Hot Wax (Simon and Schuster; September 9) is her most personal work yet. It’s a book about road trips, rock and roll, and a concert tour that goes disastrously wrong. A mashup of the best kind, Hot Wax is Thelma & Louise meets Almost Famous. Music aside, this is a story about a woman refusing the role society has thrust upon her. It’s one woman’s journey to the depths of chaos and back—where losing yourself could be the only way to rediscover who you truly are. Photo credit: Julio Arellano J ohn Wray is the author of Gone to the Wolves , Godsend , The Lost Time Accidents , Lowboy , Canaan's Tongue , and The Right Hand of Sleep . The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Award, a Cullman Fellowship from the New York Public Library, and a Mary Ellen von der Heyden Fellowship from the American Academy in Berlin, he was named one of Granta’s Best Young American Novelists in 2007. A citizen of the United States and Austria, he lives in New York City. Information Source: The Strand Book Store | eventbrite

Stephen Sondheim’s passion for puzzles and games wasn’t a quirky sideline—it was central to how he saw the world. While others saw HEDONISM, he saw SONDHEIM (it’s an anagram; remix the letters and try it yourself). In this book launch for Matching Minds with Sondheim: The Puzzles and Games of the Broadway Legend , author Barry Joseph dives into how obscure artifacts—like Sondheim’s private spoken-word album, parlor games exchanged by mail, and hidden clues in old photographs—helped him decode the creative mind behind Into the Woods , Sweeney Todd , and Sunday in the Park with George . Described by Tony-nominated actress Melissa Errico as “a window into Sondheim’s brilliant mind,” Joseph’s book draws from deep research across institutions like the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, the Library of Congress, and Boston University’s Mugar Library. He uncovers archival gems from Sondheim’s lesser-known ventures into board games, party games, and treasure hunts. This event will spotlight three of those playful creations: The Great Conductor Hunt , an epic biographical board game about (and for) Leonard Bernstein; The Game of Murder , a macabre parlor mystery; and A Little Jurassic Treasure Hunt , designed for the dinosaur halls of the American Museum of Natural History. Along the way, Joseph invites us to consider: What can these games reveal about Sondheim’s genius—and the libraries that preserve it? Featuring rare materials, archival clips, and interactive surprises, this event celebrates intellect, inquiry, and the enduring power of public collections. Clio Louise Barnes leads a picture-perfect life as a stylist and influencer, but beneath the glossy veneer she harbors a not-so glamorous secret: she grew up in a haunted house. Well, not haunted. Possessed. After Clio’s parent’s messy divorce, her mother, Alex, moved Clio and her sisters into a house occupied by a demon. Or so Alex claimed. That’s not what Clio’s sisters remember or what the courts determined when they stripped her of custody after she went off the deep end. But Alex was insistent; she even wrote a book about her experience in the house. After Alex’s sudden death, the supposedly possessed house passes to Clio and her sisters. Where her sisters see childhood trauma, Clio sees an opportunity for house flipping content. Only, as the home makeover process begins, Clio discovers there might be some truth to her mother’s claims. As memories resurface and Clio finally reads her mother’s book, the presence in the house becomes more real, and more sinister, revealing ugly truths that threaten to shake Clio’s beautiful life to its very foundation. Bring more ease, creativity and joy into your work and life through play! Come join me at Drift, Clifford Street, York for this innovative Confidently You ™ workshop - Taking fun seriously in business - including a nourishing lunch to keep your energy and creativity flowing. As adults living busy, sometimes stressful lives, we forget about the power of play. Life gets very serious as we juggle our to-do lists, fret about the financials, toil to get it all done in work, and in life. So, you'd be forgiven for thinking, 'I haven't got time to go and have FUN and PLAY at a workshop!!'. After all, when was the last time you truly 'played'? In the challenge to keep the wheels turning, everything can 'tighten up' and our ability to face challenges with creativity and adaptability can be stifled. Whether you're on the amazing adventure of running your own business or navigating working life, you might feel that your motivation levels are dipping sometimes and it just isn’t always as enjoyable as it could be. We're going to change all that. This workshop introduces a playful approach to exploring work and business, encouraging women to reconnect with their inner child and re-discover the joy in what they do. You are allowed to have fun in your work! I don't think we can be reminded of this enough. You are allowed to have fun in your business and career. And, what's more, it's having more fun that actually helps us expand and grow . Play isn’t just downtime—it’s a powerful tool to break free from unhelpful patterns, reduce stress, and unlock creativity . I know from experience that the moment I lighten up on something, t he more clarity I get, the less anxious I feel. And this is what this workshop is all about. We’re using play to explore fresh, strategic ways to approach our work, business, and the challenges we face. Why Join? Shake off self-doubt Loosen up and reduce your stress levels quickly in the moment. Learn quick and easy techniques that will help you shift your mindset and calm your nerves. Overcome the overwhelm Break through the feelings of ‘not coping’ and break through the freeze. Gain powerful tools and insights that will empower you to persevere with confidence. Know your worth Reclaim your sense of worth and shake-up your money mindset. Learn to value yourself and your contributions, so you can confidently ask for what you deserve—with less second-guessing. Be more courageous Learn to embrace new opportunities and challenges with less fear and more Yeah! Build a new sense of resiliency and confidence in a way that feels natural to you. What's different about this workshop? This workshop is about more than just about having fun for the sake of it ( although there's nothing wrong with that either )—it's about shifting your mindset. It's about embracing play as a powerful tool to reduce stress, spark creativity, and unlock new ways of thinking in the way you work. You'll leave feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to approach your challenges with a lighter, more flexible mindset. Don’t miss this chance to inject fun back into your work life, boost your confidence, and find creative solutions you never thought possible!
