Whether melting her body into the innards of her home photocopier, filming erupting geyser postcards found on eBay or crawling on her belly to enter macro-pollen perspectives, Rhona works across text, image, and performance in attempts to collapse ecological distance. Her practice foregrounds our somatic interconnectedness with the earth and looks to eco-feminisms, phenomenology, science-fiction literature and cinema alongside innovations within self-help psychology. She physically performs her compulsion to meld minds with multiple subjectivities and clamber inside other ‘bodies’ drawing upon her past of growing up a hippie to re-situate photography, writing and filmmaking into expanded, somatic, eco- feminist practices and contribute to wider ecologies of care. Rhona exhibits internationally and often speaks, co-curates and teaches on the connective tissue between art, ecology and psychology/spirituality with previous audiences including Chelsea College of Art, UCL Department of the Anthropocene and London Science Fiction Research Community. She has performed for Black Mountain College Museum, Creative Time, New York and completed art residencies in UK, Australia, and USA.Rhona was self-taught in art until aged 33, has a Bachelors in Psychology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Photography, and an MFA in Fine Art, from Slade School of Fine Art. Her simultaneous healing career (25+ years) unconventionally began as her father was a convicted armed robber, plunging her into addressing her self-esteem, embracing myriad art, ecology, healing and somatic approaches. She has a background in Clinical Psychology and now works as a Healer and Mentor. She’s currently studying a Diploma in Environmental Humanities, is a lively member of two art collectives and co-runs The More- Than-Human book club at Barbican library, which collaborated with RE/SISTERS for an edition alongside the major exhibition, November 2023. Nicholas Rodger - Book Launch: A Naval History of Britain | Old Library

Nov 14, 2024 (UTC+0) ENDED
Oxford
Arts Literary Arts
The final instalment of N.A.M. Rodger's definitive, authoritative trilogy on Britain's naval history. At the end of the French and Napoleonic wars, British sea-power was at its apogee. But by 1840, as one contemporary commentator put it, the Admiralty was full of ‘intellects becalmed in the smoke of Trafalgar’. How the Royal Navy reformed and reinvigorated itself in the course of the nineteenth century is just one thread in this magnificent book, which refuses to accept standard assumptions and analyses. Rodger sets all this in the essential context of politics and geo-strategy. The character and importance of leading admirals – Beatty, Fisher, Cunningham – is assessed, together with the roles of other less famous but no less consequential figures. Based on a lifetime’s learning, it is the culmination of one of the most significant British historical works in recent decades. Naval specialists will find much that is new here, and will be invigorated by the originality of Rodger’s judgements; but everyone who is interested in the one of the central threads in British history will find it rewarding. Nicholas A.M. Rodger is Senior Research Fellow at All Souls. Information Source: Pharos Foundation | eventbrite

Join us for a free embroidery workshop with artist Jakkai Siributr and contribute to the ongoing artwork There’s no Place. Starting as a project in a refugee camp on the border of Thailand and Myanmar, where Siributr invited inhabitants to reflect on their experiences through stitch, There’s no Place is now a global project, a conversation across continents through embroidery. About the exhibition This autumn, the Whitworth presents There’s no Place a significant new exhibition by acclaimed Thai artist Jakkai Siributr. Building on the Whitworth’s long history of radical global textile exhibitions, this show will offer visitors an intimate and breathtaking look at one of Southeast Asia’s leading contemporary artists on his first UK exhibition. The Whitworth's new Project Space will house a host of works that span the major themes in Siributr’s practice. Moving between the Thailand's political and social histories, personal stories of grief and remembrance and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this space will allow viewers to both view and interact with the artist’s intricate, monumental and dynamic work. Siributr will also transform one of the Whitworth’s core collection galleries into the latest iteration of his long-term project There's no Place. Exploring ideas of home and belonging, this collaborative embroidery piece creates an ongoing dialogue between the artist, the community of Koung Jor Shan Refugee Camp and viewers around the world. For the exhibition Siributr has transformed one of the Whitworth’s core collection galleries into the latest iteration of his long-term project There's no Place. For the opening weekend Siributr will deliver two embroidery workshops. Exploring ideas of home and belonging, this collaborative embroidery piece creates an ongoing dialogue between the artist, the community of Koung Jor Shan Refugee Camp and viewers around the world. 15 November 2024 – 16 March 2025 #JakkaiSiributr This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of our main exhibition sponsor Atinuj Tantivit and via the exhibition supporters group including Douglas Ray and Central Group. If you would like a signed copy but cannot make the event, please contact us on 0161 274 3331 or manchester@blackwell.co.uk and we can arrange this for you. About the book: After the death of her mother a woman decides to visit a familiar strip of rural upland, darkly identified on the South Pennines Ordnance Survey map as: The Waste. As she moves between trains, shunted by public encounters and haunted by past bar jobs, damp bedsits and a press shot of Vanessa Redgrave smoking in the bath, found slipped between the pages of her mother's diary, the threshold between her past, present and future self dissolves. Fringe images she has neither designed nor authored begin to steer her toward grid reference 3499, where underfoot the semi-solid mud turns with worms and ants. About the author: Influenced by linguistics and performance theory, Roy Claire Potter is an artist writer who performs, publishes and exhibits. They often collaborate with musicians and sound artists to make audio for music festivals and radio. Roy has recently presented solo and collaborative work with Book Works, Cafe OTO, Serpentine, and Camden Arts Centre (all 2024); Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts (2023); Counterflows, Cafe OTO, and PRIMARY (all 2022); Reduced Listening for BBC Radio 3, and A plus A gallery (all 2021); and Tate Britain with Tate Publishing (2019). Their debut novel The Wastes was published by Book Works earlier this summer, and shorter works have been published with Ma Bibliotheque, Dostoyevsky Wannabe, Hotel Partisan, Tate Publishing, MOSTYN and CCA Derry-Londonderry. Live and studio recorded audio works are released with Cafe OTO’s OTOROKU and TAKUROKU labels, London; Sub Rosa in Belgium; Chocolate Monk in Brighton, and Fort Evil Fruit in Dublin. Roy is Senior Lecturer of Fine Art at Liverpool John Moores University, and they are represented by A plus A gallery, Venice. Roy will be in conversation with Gareth Gavin, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing in the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester.
