Performance as Possibility: Finding Joy and Hope at the Theatre | The Brian Friel Theatre

Theater
“Performance as Possibility: Finding Joy and Hope at the Theatre” takes as its starting place the notion that theatre offers an important place of live encounter. At an historical moment in which screens and remote interactions dominate social discourse, how does theatre, with its insistence on co-presence, on sustained attention, and on the immediacy of the spectator’s intellectual and emotional response provide a place to rehearse other engagements of citizenship? What can theatre model about the joy and hopefulness of being together with strangers, witnessing the narrative, aesthetic, and emotional possibilities of performance? How can theatre help us practice social encounters based on joy and hope? Please join us for this wonderful opportunity to engage with Prof Dolan's work. The following day we will host an open seminar on feminist criticism in the north, details here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/criticism-in-precarious-contexts-tickets-1013650855997. This event is coordinated by Trish McTighe (QUB), Ciara McAllister (QUB), Caoileann Curry-Thompson, and Claire Murphy (QUB). For queries about the event please email t.mctighe@qub.ac.uk. We are grateful to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences’ Global Reputation Fund and the School of Arts, English and Languages at Queen’s University Belfast for supporting this event. Titanic: The Last Hero and the Last Coward | Willowfield Church, Belfast

A moving tribute to the heroism of the common man, and that the heart of even the richest men can be opened and brought into the light. John Harper and Joseph Ismay. Passengers on the Titanic. A church minister and an executive of the White Star Line. One a hero, one a coward. Both have a story to tell. That ill-fated crossing generated many tales of heroism and in amongst them, one or two more questionable endeavours. First-class and third-class passengers seldom came eye to eye, but as the ship slowly sunk and the panic for a lifeboat space began, these two men were cast together in a devastating drama. A heartfelt and moving tribute to the heroism of the common man, and that the heart of even the richest men can be opened and brought into the light ★★★★ - British Theatre Guide I can hardly pay the author a higher compliment. My penultimate show at Fringe 2023 was an unexpected gem. ★★★★ - Plays International The performance will begin at 7:30pm in Willowfield Church. Limited parking is available in the surrounding streets so please allow time to park. The ticket price includes refreshments. Information Source: Diocese of Down & Dromore | eventbrite

Reading Seamus Heaney is a new series of public talks and group discussions that will look at the twelve main poetry collections published by Seamus Heaney between 1966 and 2010. Beginning with Death of a Naturalist from 1966, we will read one book of poems on the third Thursday of each month, guided by Seamus Heaney Centre staff, visiting writers and other guests. By looking at entire poetry collections, participants will gain an appreciation of how Heaney’s poetic technique developed in response to the world around him: the world of his family and friends, his literary influences and the turbulent social and political context for his writing. The Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s holds a unique archive of broadcast materials, both television and radio, relating to the poet’s life and work. These recordings will be used to illuminate the discussions and provide context for the work we will be reading. Special Collections holds a wide range of notebooks and manuscripts, which will also play a role in our discussions of poetic development and writing technique. With no specialist knowledge of poetry required, you can expect to acquire an understanding of Heaney’s idea that he wanted to ‘take the English lyric and make it eat stuff that it has never eaten before.’ Information Source: School of Arts, English and Languages | eventbrite
