´Welcome to your Rihanna x Beyoncé Ride! Join us at Gymbox Farringdon for a fabulous Rihanna x Beyoncé themed spin class! We cannot wait for what is sure to be an absolute banger of a playlist with these two QUEENS! The ride will be approx 45 minutes in length but we'll be together slightly longer, for around an hour including set up/cool down. Anti-diet culture, jiggly dance party on a bike. The focus will be on how we feel and reconnecting with the joy of movement. This is an all ability ride, whether it's your first ride or your 1000th you are so welcome! Ash is a queer, non binary human dismantling diet-culture one spin class at a time! Check out their vibe on insta @ashrideslondon :) Babes assemble!!! ************************************************************************************************************* (Ash Rides London classes are offered using a sliding scale for pricing. The actual cost of the class is £18 and tickets listed below that price are limited. Please read the sliding scale guide below before purchasing a ticket. We have considered and learnt from the extensive resources generously shared for free by Alexis J. Cunningfolk of the Worts + Cunning Apothecary - please do check out Alexis' extensive blog posts about the sliding scale: http://www.wortsandcunning.com/blog/sliding-scale Below is Alexis' quick guide to the sliding scale, to help you decide where to place yourself on it... QUICK GUIDE TO THE SLIDING SCALE *The top price ticket is the actual cost of the class. If you choose a ticket price below the top tier you are receiving a discount. We have called this option 'Don't Stop The Music'. *The middle price is for those who are able to meet their basic needs but have little-to-no expendable income. Paying for this class may qualify as a sacrifice but it would not create hardship. We have called this option 'ENERGY'. *The bottom price is for those who struggle to meet their basic needs and paying for this class would be a significant hardship. We have called this option 'Sweet Dreams'. *For folx who are unable to pay anything, please email us at ashrideslondon@gmail.com, there are a handful of no cost bikes available in every ride. There are a small number of bikes in every ride which are priced higher than the actual cost of the class. These are solidarity tickets which allow those with the means to do so to 'pay it forward' and subsidise the lower/no cost tickets. We have called these tickets 'Diamonds'. (Please note we cannot offer refunds, but if you're unable to make it, let us know at least 48 hours ahead of the class and we'll do what we can to transfer your ticket to another Ash Rides London class, subject to availability)! Hosted by CUBE, amidst a touring exhibition of the works of Cedric Price, this event will discuss, in relation to teaching and practice (and Price’s legacy), enduring architectural questions of re-use, circular economics, participation, community-led development and transdisciplinary methods of working which all require careful consideration of how time impacts design. Thinkbelt – Delightful Fun: a Cedric Price Thinkbelt for our times is a collaborative project between a network of UK schools of architecture to celebrate the legacy of Cedric Price (1934-2003) for its relevance today. The Thinkbelt network explores, collects and shares knowledge on the move – embodying the dynamism, expediency and inclusiveness invested in Price’s work. The idea picks up on three of Price’s projects: POTTERIES THINKBELT (1964) - a design for a new kind of university in Staffordshire that regenerates skills and knowledge reusing and adapting its existing infrastructures; POLYARK (1973) - a plan for a circular knowledge economy between UK schools of architecture inspired by his National Schools Plan (1966); and WESTAL (1986-90), a set of three ‘store-and-display’ units commissioned by Westminster Council to improve the conditions of the borough’s street markets. For Price the project was about making everyday experiences better for people living and working in cities. The centrepiece for the exhibition is two of Price’s WESTAL market stalls with a range of facsimile and archival drawings and reference materials presenting the diversity of his practice. The stalls speak to the idea of exchange in the city and associated events encourage exchange of ideas. Each school stopover will make their own display, make new materials to add to the exhibition and host a public event to be recorded and included in a cumulative catalogue. Exhibition route:1. October 2024 : Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen 2. November: ESALA, Edinburgh 3. December: Glasgow School of Art 4. January 2025: University of Staffordshire 5. February: Birmingham City University 6. April: London Met/Westminster 7. June: Glasgow Fringe Architecture Festival This London event is the first event scheduled as part of a plan in the future to increase the links between the RIBA, Practice and Architecture schools across the capital. Reading Shakespeare can be pretty daunting, and so much of the best stuff is hidden behind what feels like impenetrable language. I've loved the Shakespeare I've read, but I find it hard to crack open my massive anthology out and just start reading when I'm also trying to live my life (and just about managing to pay rent lol). I've spoken to quite a few people who said that even just for the novelty, they'd like to read and discuss some Shakespeare plays and try and demystify the elements of the plays that make them seem inaccessible unless Tom Holland is flailing his arms about in a ruffled shirt as Romeo on the West End. I'm hoping that every month, we can try and tackle a new play. We can meet, relax and chat about the plays, discuss what we all thought about them, the good, the bad and everything in between, as well as it just being a nice break from being buffeted by people during peak time trips to Aldi in Peckham or the stress of holding people up on the bus when you can't tap in because TfL took £3.50 overnight so now you have to transfer money into your account before you get on and everyone behind you is tutting. - I've set up a Discord server for everyone to join as a place to discuss things/chat/upload resources that we've all found helpful when reading the plays: https://discord.gg/6UGqrKvt. Also the group is on insta! @reademshakespeare - SET is a Member's bar, but you won't need to be a Member to join in the book club. You just need to sign in on entering the building, so the staff know who's inside. However, SET do encourage that people do become Members to have better access to the rest of their public programme! About the works:La Nuit Constellée is a song cycle based on five poems from Guillaume Apollinaire's anthology Alcools. The cycle journeys from sunlight to moonlight, from the innocent joy of acrobats parading through a village in broad daylight in Les Saltimbanques (I), to Harlequin’s grim and unsettling spectacle of ghostly figures at dusk in Crépuscule (III), concluding with Clair de Lune (V) and the fragile beauty of droplets of honey trickling from the moon in the night sky. These songs are interspersed with smaller, more contemplative interludes that echo each other; Clotilde (II), reflecting on the pursuit of a youthful and spring-like but unrequited love; and L’Adieu (IV), a melancholic and autumnal farewell to a love now lost. Songs of Innocence was created as a Diptych. It reflects on the inner child's death and the birth of a new consciousness. The young and naïve poems from Joyce's Chamber music were selected to express this narrative, forming a mini character arc from the first heartbreak to the acceptance of moving on. The themes get introduced in the overture and get developed right till the end of part 2, where we see the themes change into premonitions and sudden bursts of anxiety. At the heart of this work is purple . This movement is based on a vision of a being asking the universe what their purpose in the universe is. The universe agrees to tell the being on the condition that they must die, as to not spoil the secret to everyone. This is the sound of their acceptance. Red is the sound of their anxiety, and epitaph, the rebirth. Program:Calluno: String Quartet no. 1 (Penna) La nuit constellée (Penna) Lyricist: Guillaume Apollinaire I. Saltimbanques II. Training at the London School of Contemporary Dance in the 1980s, Leeds-born Sharon emerged as one of the first female Principal Dancers at the renowned Phoenix Dance Company. In May 2020, Sharon became the fourth Principal of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance back in Leeds. As well as being a Trustee of various arts organisations and institutions in the north of England, Sharon became a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of West Yorkshire 2020 and her numerous awards include becoming 2016’s Yorkshire Woman of the Year and being granted an MBE in 2021. In Search of Felt Meanings: Exploring Musicians' Lived ExperiencesPianist and musicologist Professor Mine Doğantan-Dack and chartered existential psychologist Monia Brizzi will lead a creative experiential workshop for student and professional performing musicians, with the aim of addressing questions related to physical and mental wellbeing through an exploration of the participants’ felt senses and embodied-affective experiences as performers. While the daily work of music performers involves exercising expressive skills to be able to reach and transform their audiences emotionally, the pedagogical and professional contexts they work in typically disregard the crucial role their own felt experiences and emotions play in shaping their artistry and identity as musicians. A detrimental consequence of this situation is that the felt dimension of being a musician disappears from the routine discourses performers engage with, hindering the development of their emotional literacy. Both pedagogical and healthcare interventions are typically limited to cognitive, analytical and mechanical approaches, which neglect the affective and embodied dimension of performers' lived experiences, thereby contributing to the problems artists face rather than to the solutions they need. Professor Mine Doğantan-Dack, pianist and musicologist, and Monia Brizzi, chartered existential psychologist, are delighted to introduce in this workshop an innovative framework aligned with the recent developments in performing arts research that have identified somatic and affective dimensions of subjective, personal experience as the foundation of not only performance and artistic expertise but also of enjoyment and fulfillment as performing artists. During this workshop, we aim to welcome all aspects of music performers' felt and embodied experiences (physical, mental, emotional, relational) in order to guide them to reconnect with and articulate the felt, unspoken, and pre-conceptual dimensions of their artistic activities. Together, we will explore what is in a lived experience, and how it can be communicated. Join us for this very personal, and relational, journey to redeem the implicit critical knowledge of your musician-body and re-discover and unlock the motivation, commitment, presence, transcendence, and joy that will allow you to bring your whole self to your music making. This workshop aims to: Challenge the false separation of biomedical and psychosocial dimensions of musicians' lived experiences; Expose negative stereotypes about subjective and emotional experience perpetuated by western classical music pedagogies, leading to stigma, marginalisation and silencing; Restore the wholeness and inseparability of body-mind, and affirm musicians' own agency, will and self-efficacy; Motivate and encourage the articulation and communication of the subtle, vague, and elusive aspects of your felt experiences as musicians. This is a new material night from Anu Vaidyanathan and Erika Ehler, two intrepid comedians who barely survived the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. On Repeat. Audience ReviewsOriginal and engaging show. The hour has passed before you know it. Go and see it whilst you can. -- Vanessa Lloyd (UK) A brilliant and hilarious show. Highly recommended! -- Anil Kandola (India) An unexpected gem found on the off chance during one of the many sojourns in Edinburgh. Chock full of hilarious connotations about certain states and people in India along with her journey across the world, Anu's show is a refreshing antidote to the normal comedy one would expect to see at such events. Her unabashed manner makes her whole act that much better and means she should (hopefully) become a Fringe regular in years to come. Definitely worth your time to go and see her perform! -- Rishi (Edinburgh) Anu tells a woman's story, a travelers story, a mother's story, the human story with humor. She never loses the spice of her south Indian origins but never loses the universality of the human experience. She shows how we chose to tell our stories . We can laugh or cry as we look at our lives. She chooses to laugh and have us all laugh with her. Loved it. -- Carolyn Larke (USA) This was my favourite show at fringe this year. Clever, witty and interesting . I would have sat there all day. She needs a bigger venue and a bar in the room so next time I can listen for a couple of hours. I would take my daughter and my fairly sensitive mother and they would both love it. If she isn’t their next year I’m taking legal action!!! -- Steven Brown (Edinburgh) This show is so much relatable and it was really fun. Loved every bit of it. -- Debjotee Dutta (India) Anu put on a great show, which kept our family glued to their seats the entire time. It's funny, with a great mix about life & global cultures. Clean cut & easy to follow. Would definitely recommend. -- Darren Schwab(Berlin) Information Source: Avani Films | eventbrite
