The Kendo Beginners Course in Southampton is an 8-week program designed to teach individuals of all ages and abilities the necessary skills and techniques to safely participate in kendo sparring and training. Kendo, a modern Japanese martial art rooted in traditional swordsmanship, focuses on striking opponents with a bamboo sword while wearing protective armor. This course emphasizes character development by promoting discipline, perseverance, and respect for others. Participants will strive to achieve a balance between physical and mental training, as well as technical proficiency in the art of swordsmanship.
The Southampton Kendo Club welcomes both seasoned martial artists and complete beginners, providing a supportive and welcoming environment for learning and skill development. The course runs every Monday from 7:30 to 9:30pm and covers various aspects of kendo, including etiquette, basic attacks, kata (set forms), creating opportunities to attack, maintaining control after an attack, scoring valid points, and free sparring in armor. All equipment will be provided, but participants should wear suitable sports clothing and bring water.
Upon completion of the course, participants will have the opportunity to join the main class and begin training in kendo armor. The cost of the course is £20, which includes three months of membership in the club and the British Kendo Association (BKA), with insurance provided.
