Proper Scottish Gravel! This Ride will leave from the Alpkit Edinburgh store at 10am, and should take 2-4 hours depending on your speed. Be prepared for hills, slippy singletrack, and soggy shoes! The route is currently in the works, and may change depending upon riding conditions within the coming months. Composition of the route will be mainly hardpack gravel paths, and some potentially sloppy singletrack... Expect mud, expect wind, pray for sunshine ;) A GPX file of the route will be sent out to all participants who have confirmed their booking through Eventbrite, on the Thursday before the event. The route can be completed fast or at your own pace, we encourage those of all abilities to take part and have lots of fun! Just remember, this is a social ride with gravel enthusiasts and you are fully self-supported. Please come equipped with everything you would bring on a solo ride (including a helmet) and be aware that the very nature of being self-supported means you are your own mechanic for this ride, so although we all hope it won't happen... be prepared to fix a puncture by the side of the trail or handle anything else that may occur en route! Also bear in mind that the weather can be changeable at this time of year, so please dress accordingly to the forecast to ensure you stay warm and comfortable for the duration of the event. (We also recommend bringing a spare set of clothes for travelling home as you may get wet and muddy!) Hey there, I’m Lily - an ‘elder emo’ musician with a love for putting a unique, softer spin on the heavier tracks that shaped a generation. Known for turning unexpected songs from bands like Slipknot, Blink-182 and Taking Back Sunday through to Sleep Token, Bad Omens and Korn, into ‘stealth rock’ acoustic renditions, I take these typically heavy songs and strip them back to focus on the melody and lyrics. Usually, you’ll find me at badass weddings singing for couples who grew up on the emo, alt, and metal scenes saying I Do to the songs they hold close without upsetting their elder relatives. After many requests from people saying they’d love to see me live, whether they’re already married, wedding-free by choice, or just craving an intimate concert experience, I decided to hit the road for my first UK tour. 'Drama @ The Depot is a bi-monthly short play evening produced by Edinburgh based theatre company PenPal Productions. Panel: Dr Alex Brostoff Dr Alice Parrinello Dr Evelyn Whorrall-Campbell Dr Wannes Dupont (chair) Queering tends to reject stable conceptions of sexual and gender identity in favour of deep thinking about methods, methodologies, theories and epistemologies. Queer perspectives provide the opportunity to adapt and reclaim research methods that may reflect a heteronormative, privileged or hegemonic bias. These creative and transformative possibilities can also enable a critical reflexive engagement with understanding and theorising queer lives and politics. This discussion brings together researchers in literature, film, theatre and digital art to explore the ways in which queering can enrich contemporary scholarship in the arts and beyond, and the role of trans in queer/ing research. Biographies Our panel are all 2024-25 Postdoctoral Fellows at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh: Alex Brostoff (they/them) is Assistant Professor of English at Kenyon College, where they are affiliated faculty in Gender and Sexuality Studies, American Studies, and the Latinx Studies Concentration. An interdisciplinary scholar and translator, their work converges at the crossroads of genre-hybrid literatures, literary and critical theory, and trans and queer cultural production in modern and contemporary hemispheric American studies. Their first book, Unruly Relations: A Critical Reframing of Autotheory, is under advance contract with Columbia University Press. They are also the co-editor of two volumes: Autotheories (The MIT Press, 2025) and Reassignments: Trans and Sex from the Clinical to the Critical (Fordham University Press, under advance contract), as well as the co-editor of “Autotheory,” a special issue of ASAP/Journal (2021) and “Trans Literatures,” a special issue of College Literature: A Journal of Critical Literary Studies (2025). They have translated a range of works from Spanish and Portuguese, including Indigenous leader Ailton Krenak’s Life Is Not Useful (Polity Press, 2023) and Ancestral Future (Polity Press, 2024). Their scholarship and translations have appeared in ASAP/Journal, Critical Times, Synthesis, Dibur, and South Atlantic Quarterly, as well as at the Museum of Modern Art, and elsewhere. They received their PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley in 2021. Alice Parrinello (she/her) was recently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford, investigating postcolonial and environmental films for the Wellcome-Trust funded project “After the End” in collaboration with the British Film Institute (BFI). She completed her PhD from the University of Oxford in 2024 with a thesis on the films and plays by Sicilian director Emma Dante through the lens of queer theory. Alice's research engaged with questions of temporality, spectrality, kinship, ecofeminism, and homonationalism in Dante's works and argued that a queer and Southern epistemology is taking place. Her published work includes articles that have appeared in gender/sexuality/Italy, Whatever. A Transdisciplinary Journal of Queer Theories and Studies, and Simultanea: A Journal of Italian Media and Pop Culture, among others. Evelyn Whorrall-Campbell (they/them) is a researcher, writer and artist. They completed their PhD in Film and Screen Studies at the University of Cambridge in 2024, with a thesis on British trans cultural production and trans theory in the 1990s. Their PhD combined historical and theoretical approaches to demarcate this as a period of radical practice and epistemic change, and to argue that the difficulty of thinking trans in the present originates with the political horizons of the 1990s. Informed by their creative work, Evelyn’s research attempts to develop strategies of trans theorising and practice that challenge the foreclosure of gender transition as material reality. Their writing has been published or is forthcoming in British Art Studies, world picture journal, Art Monthly, and Cambridge Literary Review, amongst others. Evelyn is also the author of Memoirs of a Child Plot Hole: How to Escape Yourself Without Even Trying, a work of experimental fiction published in 2022 by Sticky Fingers Publishing. Their work has been shown, performed, read at TACO!, Kaunas Artists’ House, Auto Italia, Kupfer Project and Kingsgate Project Space. Chair: Wannes Dupont (he/him) is Lecturer in History of Sexuality at the University of Edinburgh’s School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Previously, he was Assistant Professor of History at Yale-NUS College in Singapore after postdoctoral fellowships at Yale University and for the Flemish Research Foundation at the University of Antwerp. His work, publications and teaching primarily concern the European and global sexual pasts, queer history, reproductive politics, and the intersections of biopolitics and religion. Afterhours Making is an informal, social and creative hangout. Whether you're an experienced artist or a beginner, this event is about getting inspired, trying, failing, succeeding, processing and playing with materials. You’re welcome to bring your sketchbook and your own materials, but this isn’t necessary as all materials will be provided. Materials include paper, charcoal, posca pens, felt pens, pencils, oil pastel, soft pastels, embroidery hoops, needles and thread, yarn, scissors, glue sticks, recycling material and collage paper. Alysa Ghose is an anthropologist of race, gender, and sexuality and a lecturer in Religion and Decolonisation at the School of Divinity in the University of Edinburgh. Her research has spanned feminist approaches to questions of indigeneity and health, geopolitics, Caribbean socialism, and reproduction and most recently kinship, migration and anti-Blackness. For the last 16 years she has worked as an ethnographer of Cuba with her most in-depth research being about Afrodiasporic/ indigenous religious traditions on the island, and relationships between the living and the dead as a means of survival in everyday precarity. With expertise on gender, migration, health, kinship and childhood in dialogue with indigenous spiritual practices, Alysa will discuss 3 main themes: the state and its satellites; knowledge and sensorial engagement and healing and repair. These themes emerge from Guadalupe Maravilla’s ‘Sana Sana, Colita de Rana’ (2024) and ‘Retablos’ (2023), two pieces from Maravilla’s Piedras de Fuego. This audio description tour will provide a description and an insight into the scale, texture and feelings of the artworks currently on display at Talbot Rice Gallery. This tour has been developed specifically for blind and partially sighted people. Join artist Lou Fraser who will provide tactile experiences throughout the session, to explore the exhibitions Gabrielle Goliath | Personal Accountsand Guadalupe Maravilla | Piedras de Fuego (Fire Stones). Personal Accounts is a transnational, decolonial, black feminist project of repair by artist Gabrielle Goliath. In this immersive and deeply affecting series of video and sound cycles, Goliath addresses the normativity of patriarchal violence, working in close collaboration with survivors of gender-based violence, and allies in Johannesburg, Tunisia, Oslo, Milan, Stellenbosch and now Edinburgh. The works about how black, brown, indigenous, femme, queer, non-binary, and trans beings survive & create conditions in which they can thrive, love, and succeed. While the intended experience of both exhibitions is that of survival, repair and the assertion of life, some of the wall texts in Personal Accounts discuss sexual violence, which visitors may prefer to be aware of in advance. The wall texts are optional to read. Piedras de Fuego (Fire Stones) is the first solo exhibition in the UK of Guadalupe Maravilla,a transdisciplinary visual artist, choreographer, and healer. At the age of eight, Maravilla was part of the first wave of unaccompanied, undocumented children to arrive at the United States border in the 1980s as a result of the Salvadoran Civil War. Combining art and healing, his work takes the forms of shrines, sound baths, paintings, play, sculpture, and huge headdresses using material from the lands he crossed. Maravilla’s work draws from indigenous and contemporary systems of knowledge, often mixing crafts, medicinal materials, and plants along with commercial and readymade objects. This tour will be delivered live as an audio-described tour with an English voiceover. Look around you. Nearly everything you can see began with a drawing. Your clothes? Fashion illustration. That radiator? Product design. The building around you was an architectural sketch. Those drawings would not have been about perfectly replicating something, because that something did not yet exist. I believe that drawing is for everyone because it is a way to imagine. Come along an learn some of the Traditional Drawing Skills relating to Architecture alongisde the skill of Drawing from your Imagination. We'll look at capturing depth and detail and we'll play drawing games together to help each of us conceptualise and design our own piece of architecture. I'm Hannah Kelly, an Edinburgh-based artist and art educator - please know you're ever so welcome whatever your confidence level with drawing. My tours are about building creative courage and laughing together and seeing things afresh. This drawing tour is relaxed and playful, suited to teens as well as adults. Viv Gee's Advanced comedy course is suitable for people who have previously participated in a stand-up course or performed comedy before.
