We are thrilled to host Torrey Peters for an off-site event at Haymarket House on Tuesday, April 1st, to celebrate the release of Stag Dance: A Novel & Stories. This event will include a reading and book signing. This is a ticketed event! Tickets include a copy of Stag Dance. We have a limited amount of GA tickets for students and those with no/low income. This event will be held at Haymarket House (800 W Buena) which is a mask-required space. “Hot, heartbreaking, and thrillingly victorious.”—Miranda July, New York Times bestselling author of All Fours In this collection of one novel and three stories, bestselling author Torrey Peters’s keen eye for the rough edges of community and desire push the limits of trans writing. In Stag Dance, the titular novel, a group of restless lumberjacks working in an illegal winter logging outfit plan a dance that some of them will volunteer to attend as women. When the broadest, strongest, plainest of the axmen announces his intention to dance as a woman, he finds himself caught in a strange rivalry with a pretty young jack, provoking a cascade of obsession, jealousy, and betrayal that will culminate on the big night in an astonishing vision of gender and transition. Three startling stories surround Stag Dance: “Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones” imagines a gender apocalypse brought about by an unstable ex-girlfriend. In “The Chaser,” a secret romance between roommates at a Quaker boarding school brings out intrigue and cruelty. In the last story, “The Masker,” a party weekend on the Las Vegas strip turns dark when a young crossdresser must choose between two guides: a handsome mystery man who objectifies her in thrilling ways, or a cynical veteran trans woman offering unglamorous sisterhood. Acidly funny and breathtaking in its scope, with the inventive audacity of George Saunders or Jennifer Egan, Stag Dance provokes, unsettles, and delights. Torrey Peters is the bestselling author of the novel Detransition, Baby, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and was named one of the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century by The New York Times. It was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize, a finalist for the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize, and longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. She has an MFA from the University of Iowa and an MA in comparative literature from Dartmouth. Peters rides a pink motorcycle and splits her time between Brooklyn and an off-grid cabin in Vermont. Accessibility: This event is hosted at Haymarket House (800 W Buena) which is a wheelchair accessible space. The wheelchair ramp is located via the private parking lot, which is accessible via N. Clarendon Avenue. Masks are REQUIRED in Haymarket House. We ask that all in-person attendees wear masks in the event space during the program for the health and well-being of the speaker and other guests. Join us at Book Culture 112th on Tuesday, April 1st at 6:30pm for a reading and conversation to celebrate the release of Trauma Plot by Jamie Hood. She will be joined by Kate Zambreno, author of Tones and Heroines. AboutTrauma Plot: From a rising literary star and the author of how to be a good girl comes a brilliant, biting, and beautifully wrought memoir of trauma and the cost of survival. “Hood descends into the terrifying dark of the unsayable with the dimmest of flashlights and returns bearing verbal gems, treasures, and marvels. Trauma Plot is a glass case of such wonders.”—Torrey Peters, bestselling author of Detransition, Baby In the thick of lockdown, 2020, poet, critic, and memoirist Jamie Hood published her debut, how to be a good girl, an interrogation of modern femininity and the narratives of love, desire, and violence yoked to it. The Rumpus praised Hood’s “bold vulnerability,” and Vogue named it a Best Book of 2020. In Trauma Plot, Hood draws on disparate literary forms to tell the story that lurked in good girl’s margins—of three decades marred by sexual violence and the wreckage left behind. With her trademark critical remove, Hood interrogates the archetype of the rape survivor, who must perform penitence long after living through the unthinkable, invoking some of art’s most infamous women to have played the role: Ovid’s Philomela, David Lynch’s Laura Palmer, and Artemisia Gentileschi, who captured Judith’s wrath. In so doing, she asks: What do we as a culture demand of survivors? And what do survivors, in turn, owe a world that has abandoned them? Trauma Plot is a scalding work of personal and literary criticism. It is a send-up of our culture’s pious disdain for “trauma porn,” a dirge for the broken promises of #MeToo, and a paean to finding life after death. Jamie Hood is the author of how to be a good girl, one of Vogue’s Best Books of 2020, and regards, marcel, a monthly newsletter on Proust and other miscellany. Her essays and criticism have appeared in The Baffler, Bookforum, The Nation, Los Angeles Review of Books, The New Inquiry, The Drift, and elsewhere. She lives in Brooklyn. Kate Zambreno is the author most recently of The Light Room (to be published in paperback in Fall 2025 by Transit Books) as well as Tone, a collaborative study with Sofia Samatar (Columbia University). Their manifesto, Heroines, was recently reissued by Semiotext(e), with an introduction by Jamie Hood. A collection on zoos and Kafkas, Animal Stories, is also forthcoming in Fall 2025 from Transit Books' Undelivered Lecture series. They are at work on a series, Realisms, circling around precarity, apartments and desire (beginning with Foam and Performance Art). They currently teach in the graduate writing program at Columbia University. Event address: Book Culture 536 W 112th St. New York, NY 10025 Information Source: Book Culture | eventbrite

Attend this lecture on campus or online. Strategic Innovation: A New Discipline in Design and TechnologyThe world is undergoing rapid and dramatic changes. According to McKinsey, “artificial intelligence has the potential to be as transformative as the steam engine was to the 19th-century Industrial Revolution.” What implications does this hold for design and its the design industry? While we may not yet have definitive answers, it is clear that both the approach to design and the profession must evolve. Design, as a creative problem-solving discipline, is confronted with increasingly complex challenges on a daily basis. The integration of the digital world adds layers of complexity while simultaneously streamlining and enhancing solutions. In this context, strategic thinking and approach can thrive with a potential to position us as leaders rather than followers in a technology-driven world. Through real-life examples and experience in deploying strategic thinking, this session will offer a dynamic conversation on the role and value of strategy. It will explore how strategy as a discipline can help us rethink not only design methods but also their underlying purposes. The discussion aims to provide insights into applying these concepts to our work as well as professional paths, ensuring a viable future. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the foundational principles of strategy while challenging the traditional concepts of design and the design thinking process. Through real-world examples, they will learn what it means to develop design-related strategies, elevating problem-solving to new heights. Additionally, they will learn to recognize technology as a crucial component in uncovering problems and devising innovative solutions through data integration and advancing tools, while balancing human-centric engagement and outcomes. By grasping the strategic approach framework, participants will also explore applications across various industries and apply this thinking to their career paths. They will learn how to design their own strategic and adaptable future in an increasingly digital world, positioning themselves with a unique value proposition. CEU: This lecture equals 1 professional architecture credit towards licensure requirements. As part of CoAD's Design x Technology Lecture Series this lecture is free and open to the public. Guests may watch online or on campus. Register for the location/viewing details. Your on-campus registration includes a pizza lunch. ABOUT: As the leading workplace strategist for SmithGroup’s National Workplace Practice, Alexis has spent 28 years harmonizing the built environment with the human experience. A respected thought leader and change agent, Alexis's work is grounded in the conviction that strategic solutions, whether design-related or otherwise, can drive successful outcomes. Alexis possesses unique expertise, integrating a strategic mindset with data- and research-driven solutions to projects of all scales. She has developed innovative solutions for Fortune 500 clients, solving complex business and space challenges nationwide. Committed to evolving her role and profession to meet the demands of an increasingly connected world, Alexis acts as a catalyst, integrating the physical and digital realms to better connect businesses and people. Her personal journey embodies change. Born and raised in South Korea, Alexis moved to the U.S. as a teen, forging a career from coast to coast. These diverse experiences provide unique perspective for her work. Please join Alchemy by Knopf as we celebrate our first book of fiction: WE, THE KINDLING by Otoniya J. Okot Bitek. Otoniya will be in conversation with Dionne Brand, editorial director of Alchemy by Knopf. About the book: As this spare and luminous novel begins, we meet Miriam, Helen and Maggie—three friends who, years ago when they were school children, survived capture by the Lord's Resistance Army in northern Uganda. Now, as the women go about their new lives in the city, shopping, caring for their children, planning and thinking about what the future might hold, we come to understand how deeply their past haunts the present. In graceful yet unflinching prose, Otoniya Okot Bitek weaves vivid folk tales with taut realism, revealing flashes of life before the war that ravaged Uganda, unspooling the terrible events that led to abductions of children from supposedly safe schools, and tracing perilous journeys home again. Facing endless treks across the ravaged countryside and through narrow mountain passes, gun battles and constant brutality, many girls did not survive. Those who did make it back home, some carrying small children of their own, bore the unspoken weight of their experiences within families and communities that often wished to forget and move on. In We, the Kindling, Okot Bitek insistently refuses to turn away or to spectacularize tragedy, shaping a chorus of women's voices into a hauntingly beautiful novel, suffused with care and humanity. OTONIYA JULIANE OKOT BITEK writes poetry and fiction. Her first collection, 100 Days, won the 2017 IndieFab Book of the Year Award for poetry and the 2017 Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry. Her second collection, A is for Acholi, won the 2023 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. Her most recent collection of poetry, Song & Dread, is published by Talonbooks. Otoniya was born in Kenya to Ugandan parents and has lived in Canada for more than three decades. Her short story “Going Home” received a special mention in the 2004 Commonwealth Short Fiction Prize. We, the Kindling is her first novel. Information Source: Another Story Bookshop | eventbrite

Arts Theater
The Drama Book Shop presents, in association with Jay Michaels Global Communications, “ACTING OUT: How a Prison Theatre Workshop Broke Free” with Richard Hoehler About the Book When Richard Hoehler first walked through the doors of a medium security prison in upstate New York, he assumed it would be a one-time thing. As a busy freelance writer, actor and teacher he had nonetheless agreed to drive upstate to teach an acting class for inmates pro bono. At the very least he hoped the experience might give him new ideas for his teaching on the outside. What he could not have anticipated was the beginning of an odyssey that led Hoehler to an incredibly popular series of acting and writing workshops and mounting seven full productions with prison inmates—men whom society has written off and locked away as irredeemable. In this account of his journey working with the men, we witness a rare kind of theatrical magic. Within the incredibly dehumanizing and often arbitrary prison system, participants work to express themselves and connect with dramatic works where anger, compassion, forgiveness and tears pour forth in the safety of the workshop. It is clear that Hoehler is not a “do-gooder” but simply there to do good work. This is the remarkable story of theatre’s ability to change lives even in the most unlikely of settings. About the Author Richard Hoehler’s original theatre works (New Jersey/New York, Working Class, Human Resources, I of the Storm) have run Off Broadway, regionally, and abroad and he is the winner of the OOBR for Best Solo Performance. His full-length play, Fathers and Sons, was produced at the Lion Theatre on 42 nd Street and his collection of 10-minute plays, Showdown, was recently presented at the Gerald W. Lynch Theatre. For thirty years, Hoehler has created theatre with at-risk teenagers, inmates, and the formerly incarcerated. Richard conducted creative writing workshops on Riker’s Island for over a decade and for the past fourteen years has led weekly theatre workshops at Otisville State Prison mounting eight productions on the inside during his tenure. In January of 2020, Hoehler founded Acting Out, a professional acting company for the formerly incarcerated in residence at HB Studio. This year Richard received the Justice through the Arts Award from the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Hoehler’s book, Acting Out: How a Prison Theatre Workshop Broke Free, will be published by Applause Books in the Fall of 2024. Other theatre work is published by Smith and Kraus and included in the Billy Rose Collection at Lincoln Center. Hoehler’s material has been optioned by Columbia Tri-Star Television and featured at the Midtown International Theatre Festival in Manhattan and Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. His newest solo work, E, was performed this year at Delaware Valley Arts Alliance. Hoehler is an acting instructor at HB Studio and Stella Adler Studio, and an adjunct professor of Theatre and English at John Jay College and City College of New York. The evening will also include a live performance by members of the Acting Out company. About the Cast Christian (Fro) Gonzalez: My name is Christian, I am 31 years old, and I am from the Bronx. My whole life I have been a skater and always been daring to try new things! Skateboarding taught me one main important thing in my life, which is to never give up until you have successfully completed your goal. Having this mindset let me conquer a lot of things in my life by instilling the belief that nothing is impossible to achieve, and for as long as you have that, you are invincible. Shi Greene: I found Acting Out during the pandemic. It was a breath of fresh air during COVID lockdowns. In the last few years I’ve been blessed to be a part of four productions. Growing up I wanted to be a radio personality, and working with Acting Out helps me feel like I have fulfilled my dream. Gilfredo (Fox) Valentin: I was born in Yonkers, New York, to Puerto Rican parents. I have two sisters and am a proud father of a high school student. My theatre credits include ESTOP FABLES, BUFFALO SOLDIER, TWELVE ANGRY MEN, EXONERATED, TALK TO ME, INSIDE OUT, KID STUFF and THE COUCH. I grew up loving animals and have become a certified dog trainer. I have raised and trained dozens of service dogs for veterans who have come home from war suffering from PTSD and physical disabilities. Ron Horton: I am one of the original members of Acting Out, and have been seen in KID STUFF, INSIDE OUT, and TALK TO ME. During my 30-year incarceration, I discovered acting and directing, which delivered me through some very dark years. I became a triple threat after joining Hoehler’s Theatre Workshop at Otisville— adding playwriting to the mix, where I wrote THE BOX, a piece which made its debut in Acting Out’s presentation of INSIDE OUT, as it was not permitted to be performed on the inside. I also took a turn Off-Broadway in the ensemble of I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER in 2019 at The Chain Theatre. Join Rainy Day Books at Unity Temple to celebrate Gretchen Rubin's newest book, Secrets of Adulthood: Simple Truths for Our Complex Lives. This event includes a moderated conversation with Gretchen and an opportunity to get your book signed and personalized. The Book Secrets of Adulthood: Simple Truths for Our Complex Lives The right idea, invoked at the right time, can change our lives. Drawing from her long studies of happiness, and also from the challenges she’s faced herself, writer Gretchen Rubin has discovered the “Secrets of Adulthood” that can help us manage the complexities of life. To convey her conclusions, she turned to the aphorism—the ancient literary discipline that demands that a writer convey a large truth in a few words. Perhaps you’re paralyzed by indecision, struggling to navigate a big change, fighting a temptation, or puzzled by the behavior of someone you love; whatever you face, the right aphorism can help. From procrastination to the pursuit of happiness, Secrets of Adulthood is filled with witty and thought-provoking reflections such as: “Recognize that, like sleeping with a big dog in a small bed, things that are uncomfortable can also be comforting” “Accept yourself, and expect more from yourself” “Easy children raise good parents” “What can be done at any time is often done at no time” For anyone undergoing a major life transition, such as graduation, career switch, marriage, or moving, or for those just encountering everyday dilemmas, these disarming aphorisms will inspire you by articulating truths that you may never have noticed but instantly recognize. The Author Gretchen Rubin is one of today’s most influential observers of happiness and human nature. She’s the author of many books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers Outer Order, Inner Calm; The Four Tendencies; Better Than Before; and The Happiness Project. Her books have sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. She hosts the top-ranking, award-winning podcast Happier with Gretchen Rubin, where she explores practical solutions for living a happier life. Raised in Kansas City, Rubin lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters. Information Source: Rainy Day Books | eventbrite

Join Rainy Day Books at Unity Temple to celebrate Olivie Blake's newest book, Gifted & Talented. This event includes a moderated conversation with Olivie and an opportunity to get your book signed and personalized. The Book Gifted & Talented Where there’s a will, there’s a war. Thayer Wren, the brilliant CEO of Wrenfare Magitech and so-called father of modern technology, is dead. Any one of his three telepathically and electrokinetically gifted children would be a plausible inheritor to the Wrenfare throne. Or at least, so they like to think. Meredith, textbook accomplished eldest daughter and the head of her own groundbreaking biotech company, has recently cured mental illness. You're welcome! If only her father's fortune wasn't her last hope for keeping her journalist ex-boyfriend from exposing what she really is: a total fraud. Arthur, second-youngest congressman in history, fights the good fight every day of his life. And yet, his wife might be leaving him, and he's losing his re-election campaign. But his dead father’s approval in the form of a seat on the Wrenfare throne might just turn his sinking ship around. Eilidh, once the world's most famous ballerina, has spent the last five years as a run-of-the-mill marketing executive at her father’s company after a life-altering injury put an end to her prodigious career. She might be lacking in accolades compared to her siblings, but if her father left her everything, it would finally validate her worth—by confirming she'd been his favorite all along. On the pipeline of gifted kid to clinically depressed adult, nobody wins—but which Wren will come out on top? The Author Olivie Blake is the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six, Alone with You in the Ether, One for My Enemy, and Masters of Death. As Alexene Farol Follmuth, she is also the author of the young adult rom-coms Twelfth Knight and My Mechanical Romance. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, goblin prince/toddler, and rescue pit bull. Information Source: Rainy Day Books | eventbrite
