Trained in Japanese ceramic styles, Aaron Scythe will lead the workshop, giving tips and tricks on how you can create special take home pieces. Over a brew or two, spend some time learning how Scythe creates his distinctive artworks. This workshop is presented in connection with Whenua Whatu: Māori Ceramics from The Dowse Collection, on at The Dowse until March 2. *Firing not included Aaron Scythe From the late 1990s Scythe lived and worked as a ceramic artist in Japan studying under master craftsperson Professor Koie Ryoji and establishing his own studio and kiln. In 2011 he moved back to Aotearoa with his family following the earthquake and nuclear reactor meltdown at Ōkuma, Fukushima, just north of their home in Mashiko. After a period in the Waikato, Scythe relocated to Wanganui setting up a studio and workshop where he is currently based. While in Japan Scythe was heavily influenced by the Momoyama period (1568-1715) which saw the rise in popularity of the tea ceremony, and the creation and evolution of the many vessels associated with it. This particular work brings together a number of different influences in relation to the construction, firing and decoration of tsubo (traditional vase forms). Yobitsugi (to invite connection) is a technique where multiple vessels are intentionally broken, and the pieces are combined to create a unique new object. In this work, Scythe has employed this technique, alongside his distinctive illustrations, to reflect the relationships he has to both Aotearoa and Japan. Waterloo
Arts Comedy
We're Tri City Improv. Since 2022, we've been performing improvised comedy in Kitchener/Waterlo, Guelph, and Cambridge. For ninety minutes, we play with ideas and suggestions from our audience to make up entertaining and hilarious scenes on the spot. No two shows are different! The April show features our female performers as well as a few ringers we've recruited just for this show. These are some of the funniest ladies you've ever seen make stuff up on a stage! We're at KWLT in uptown Waterloo for this one. It's a great venue with excellent sight lines in every seat, and a LICENSED concession. We're right in the heart of uptown, surrounded by some amazing restaurants and bars. Grab a bunch of friends and make a night of it! The doors open at 7:30, and the show starts at 8. We've sold out our last four shows. Don't wait - seating is limited - get your tickets now! Information Source: TriCity Improv | eventbrite

About your instructor - For over two decades, Phong Tran and his wife have cultivated a coffee culture at Matter of Taste Coffee Bar in Downtown Kitchener. As pioneers in the Waterloo region, they proudly introduced latte art to the region, setting a new standard for coffee aficionados in Ontario. In the midst of the third wave coffee movement, their passion and dedication were recognized at the barista championships, where they secured second place in their first year of competition. A year later, their talent shone even brighter, claiming both first and second place titles, and earning accolades for best taste in the Toronto Life Magazine latte art edition. In 2008, Matter of Taste Coffee expanded and established the region's first specialty coffee roaster. Committed to direct trade with farmers and curating exceptional coffee from around the globe, they have fostered a community of coffee enthusiasts and connoisseurs. Throughout their journey, Phong has trained numerous baristas, many of whom have gone on to become industry professionals, including Q-graders, coffee critics, professional roasters, marketers, and industry representatives. Phong Tran is very pleased to partner with Conestoga introducing this very first latte art workshop! Any questions, email Shannon - srea@conestogac.on.ca Information Source: Shannon Rea | eventbrite
