The 3 Day Winter Skills Course in Aviemore is a comprehensive and essential program for anyone interested in walking and staying safe in the UK Mountains during the winter season. This course is designed to provide participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to confidently navigate the winter mountains while ensuring their safety. Led by Lee, an experienced and qualified instructor holding the Winter Mountain Leader Award, this course offers a small group setting to cater to the needs and preferences of each participant.

Throughout the course, participants will learn and practice a wide range of skills, including movement on ice and snow using crampons and ice axes, reading avalanche hazard reports, navigating in low visibility and whiteout conditions, and dealing with emergencies. The course also covers important topics such as dynamic risk assessment, efficient group management, and general winter kit advice.

The itinerary includes three full days of immersive learning, with each day starting with a meeting to discuss topics, review forecasts, and conduct kit checks. Participants will then head out onto the hills to apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge. The days will conclude with debriefings in a local cafe or pub, providing an opportunity for questions, joint planning for the next day, and recognizing individual successes.

To participate in this course, it is recommended to have prior hiking experience in summer conditions and a suitable fitness level for walking in the hills. While no previous experience with ice axes or crampons is required, participants will need to bring their own helmet, ice axe, crampons, and suitable boots. Helmet hire is available at Tiso Aviemore.
